Single and double shake-up processes in the Ne 1s photoelectron spectrum

Auger Shake-Up Assisted Electron Recapture

The presence of doubly excited states (DESs) above the core-hole ionization threshold nontrivially modulates the x-ray absorption because the participator Auger decay couples DESs to the underlying low-energy core-hole continuum. We show that coupling also affects the high-energy continuum populated by the spectator Auger decay of DESs. For the K-L_{23}^{2} Auger decay of the 1s^{-1}3p^{-1}4s^{2}^{1}P state in argon, the competing nonresonant path is assigned to the recapture of the 1s photoelectron caused by emission of the fast electron from the shake-up K-L_{23}^{2} decay of the 1s^{-1} ion.

Probing the molecular structure of aqueous triiodide via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and correlated electron phenomena

Liquid-microjet-based X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was applied to aqueous triiodide solutions, I₃^-_(aq.), to investigate the anion's valence- and core-level electronic structure, ionization dynamics, associated electron-correlation effects, and nuclear geometric structure. The roles of multi-active-electron (shake-up) ionization processes - with noted sensitivity to the solute geometric structure - were investigated through I₃^-_(aq.) solution valence, I 4d, and I 3d core-level measurements. The experimental spectra were interpreted with the aid of simulated photoelectron spectra, built upon multi-reference ab initio electronic structure calculations associated with different I₃^-_(aq.) molecular geometries. A comparison of the single-to-multi-active-electron ionization signal ratios extracted from the experimental and theoretical core-level photoemission spectra suggests that the ground state of the solute adopts a near-linear average geometry in aqueous solutions. This contrasts with the interpretation of time-resolved X-ray solution scattering studies, but is found to be fully consistent with the rest of the solution-phase I₃^-_(aq.) literature. Comparing the results of low- and high-photon-energy photoemission measurements, we further suggest that the aqueous anion adopts a more asymmetric geometry at the aqueous-solution-gas interface than in the aqueous bulk.

Limitations of the equivalent core model for understanding core-level spectroscopies

The equivalent core model, or the Z + 1 approximation, has been used to interpret the binding energy, BE, shifts observed in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, XPS; in particular to relate these shifts to their origin in the electronic structure of the system. Indeed, a recent paper has claimed that the equivalent core model provides an intuitive chemical view of XPS BE shifts. In the present paper, we present a detailed comparison of the electronic structure provided from rigorous core-hole theory and from the equivalent core model to assess the validity and the utility of the use of the equivalent core model. This comparison shows that the equivalent core model provides a qualitative view of the different properties of initial and core-hole electronic structure. It is also shown that a very serious limitation of the equivalent core model is that it fails to distinguish between initial and final state contributions to the shifts of BEs which seriously reduces the utility of the information obtained with the equivalent core model. Indeed, there is a danger of making an incorrect assignment of the importance of relaxation because the equivalent core model appears to stress the role of final state effects. Given the importance of the distinction of initial and final state effects, we provide rigorous definitions of these two effects and we discuss an example where an incorrect interpretation was made based on the use of the equivalent core model.

Hard x-ray spectroscopy and dynamics of isolated atoms and molecules: a review

We present here a review of the most significant recent achievements in the field of HAXPES (hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) on isolated atoms and molecules, and related spectroscopies. The possibility of conducting hard x-ray photoexcitation and photoionization experiments under state-of-the art conditions in terms of photon and electron kinetic energy resolution has become available only in the last few years. HAXPES has then produced structural and dynamical information at the level of detail already reached in the VUV and soft-x-ray ranges. The much improved experimental conditions have allowed extending to the hard x-ray range some methods well established in soft x-ray spectroscopies. Investigations of electron and nuclear dynamics in the femtosecond (fs, 10^-15 s) and even attosecond (as, 10^-18 s) regime have become feasible. Complex relaxation phenomena following deep-core ionization can now be enlightened in great detail. Other phenomena like e.g. recoil-induced effects are much more important in fast photoelectron emission, which can be induced by hard x-rays. Furthermore, a new kind of ionic states with double core holes can be observed by x-ray single-photon absorption. Future perspectives are also discussed.

Energy correlation among three photoelectrons emitted in core-valence-valence triple photoionization of Ne

The direct observation of triple photoionization involving one inner shell and two valence electrons is reported. The energy distribution of the three photoelectrons emitted from Ne is obtained using a very efficient multielectron coincidence method using the magnetic bottle electron spectroscopic technique. A predominance of the direct path to triple photoionization for the formation of Ne3+ in the 1s 2s2 2p4 configuration is observed. It is demonstrated that the energy distribution evolves with photon energy and indicates a significant difference with triple photoionization involving only valence electrons.

Experimental investigation of core-valence double photoionization

Core-valence double photoionization has been observed in Ne atoms and N2 molecules using a magnetic-bottle time of flight spectrometer. The multielectron coincidence data sets give complete information on the energy correlations between all emitted electrons, which supports a detailed description of the core-valence double photoionization processes including direct spectroscopy of the core-valence doubly ionized states, the final states populated by their Auger decay and details of the dynamics of core-valence double photoionization for selected states.

Development of a relaxation-inducing cluster expansion formalism for treating strong relaxation and correlation effects

We present in this paper a comprehensive account of an explicitly spin-free coupled cluster theory for treating energy differences of open-shell states relative to a closed-shell ground state, where the open-shell states of interest are dominated by a few simple configuration state functions. We develop a valence-universal coupled cluster formalism to achieve this via a novel cluster expansion ansatz for the valence part of the wave operator, where the orbital relaxation and the correlation relaxation accompanying ionization/excitation from the ground state are taken care of to all orders in compact, efficient, and explicitly spin-free manner. The essential difference of our proposed ansatz from the ordinary and the normal-ordered cluster ansatz in vogue is that (a) we allow the valence cluster operators to be connected among themselves with spectator valence lines only and (b) we use suitable combinatoric factors accompanying powers of cluster operators thus connected, which are equal to the number of ways the operators can be joined, leading to the same excitation (the automorphic factor). We emphasize that such an ansatz does not generate terms (diagrams) with chains of cluster operators joined among themselves via spectator lines only. Barring only a few, almost all the terms in the working equations determining the cluster amplitudes involve contraction of the Hamiltonian with the cluster operators via at least one nonspectator line, leading to what we call a "strongly connected" series. The structure of the working equation is remarkably similar to the single-reference closed-shell equation, with a few additional terms. The presence of contractions among cluster operators via spectator lines introduces the additional physical effects of orbital and correlation relaxation using low-body cluster operators. As an illustrative application of the new multireference coupled cluster (CC) theory, we consider in this paper computation of ionization potentials (IPs) of one-valence problem with only one active orbital. The numerical applications are made for both the core- and the inner- and outer-valence IPs for several molecular systems. The numerical values demonstrate the superiority of the relaxation-inducing CC theory, as compared to the normal-ordered ansatz.

Resonant double excitation observed in the near-threshold evolution of the photoexcited F K alpha satellite intensity in NaF

We present a precise measurement of the photoexcited F K alpha satellite intensity's evolution for NaF from [1s2p] double excitation threshold to saturation. A direct comparison between the observed evolution and the x-ray absorption spectrum was successfully made, and the contribution of multielectron transitions to the absorption spectrum was clearly resolved for the first time. A resonance-like feature observed in the near-threshold evolution is attributed to the [1s2p]3p(2) resonant double excitation as confirmed by calculations.
