Determination of x-ray spectra from attenuation data by imposinga prioripositiveness and bounded support: Theory and experimental validation

The determination of the spectral distribution of an x-ray beam from attenuation measurements in a narrow beam has aroused great interest since it was first proposed by Silberstein in 1932. Since then, it has become clear that this is an ill-conditioned problem. Then, due to the intrinsic difficulties of the problem, care has been taken to improve the mathematical and numerical inversion techniques. Alternative ways to circumvent the explicit inversion by using the attenuation curve itself to calculate directly generalized moments of the solution have also been found. In this work, the explicit reconstruction of the spectral distribution is carried out by an expectation-maximization method that satisfies the a priori condition of positiveness of the solution and allows us to impose the boundness of its support easily, conditions which are known to be fulfilled by physically acceptable solutions. The simulations made and the experimental validation of the proposed method allow us to prove its scope and limitations.

X-ray spectra estimation using attenuation measurements from 25 kVp to 18 MV

Attenuation measurements for primary x-ray spectra from 25 kVp to 18 MV were made using aluminum filters for all energies except for orthovoltage where copper filters were used. An iterative perturbation method, which utilized these measurements, was employed to derive the apparent x-ray spectrum. An initial spectrum or pre-spectrum was used to start the process. Each energy value of the pre-spectrum was perturbed positively and negatively, and an attenuation curve was calculated using the perturbed values. The value of x-rays in the given energy bin was chosen to minimize the difference between the measured and calculated transmission curves. The goal was to derive the minimum difference between the measured transmission curve and the calculated transmission curve using the derived x-ray spectrum. The method was found to yield useful information concerning the lower photon energy and the actual operating potential versus the nominal potential. Mammographic, diagnostic, orthovoltage, and megavoltage x-ray spectra up to 18 MV nominal were derived using this method. The method was validated using attenuation curves from published literature. The method was also validated using attenuation curves calculated from published spectra. The attenuation curves were then used to derive the x-ray spectra.

Determination of the energy fluence of diagnostic x-ray beams from field measurements of attenuation curves

The use of field measurements of attenuation curves of low-energy x-ray beams as a functional description of the beams is presented in this work. The energy fluence carried by diagnostic x-ray beams has been determined from A1 attenuation measurements made with a quality control ionization chamber for diagnostic x-ray equipment and with a low-volume ionization chamber. The obtained values are compared with those obtained from a catalog of spectral data for diagnostic x rays.
