Optimal design of planar-concave collimators for SPECT--an analytical approach

A Monte Carlo study on the performance evaluation of a parallel hole collimator for a HiReSPECT: A dedicated small-animal SPECT

Collimator geometry has an important contribution on the image quality in SPECT imaging. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of parallel hole collimator hole-size on the functional parameters (including the spatial resolution and sensitivity) and the image quality of a HiReSPECT imaging system using SIMIND Monte Carlo program. To find a proper trade-off between the sensitivity and spatial resolution, the collimator with hole diameter ranges of 0.3-1.5 mm (in steps of 0.3 mm) were used with a fixed septal and hole thickness values (0.2 mm and 34 mm, respectively). Lead, Gold, and Tungsten as the LEHR collimator material were also investigated. The results on a ^99mTc point source scanning with the experimental and also simulated systems were matched to validate the simulated imaging system. The results on the simulation showed that decreasing the collimator hole size, especially in the Gold collimator, improved the spatial resolution to 18% and 3.2% compared to the Lead and the Tungsten, respectively. Meanwhile, the Lead collimator provided a good sensitivity in about of 7% and 8% better than that of Tungsten and Gold, respectively. Overall, the spatial resolution and sensitivity showed small differences among the three types of collimator materials assayed within the defined energy. By increasing the hole size, the Gold collimator produced lower scatter and penetration fractions than Tungsten and Lead collimator. The minimum detectable size of hot rods in micro-Jaszczak phantom on the iterative maximum-likelihood expectation maximization (MLEM) reconstructed images, were determined in the sectors of 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 2.4 and 2.6 mm for scanning with the collimators in hole sizes of 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, 1.2 and 1.5 mm at a 5 cm distance from the phantom. The Gold collimator with hole size of 0.3 mm provided a better image quality with the HiReSPECT imaging.

Determination of optimal collimation parameters for a rotating slat collimator system: a system matrix method using ML-EM

Nowadays, Single Photon imaging has become an essential part of molecular imaging and nuclear medicine. Whether to establish a diagnosis or in the therapeutic monitoring, this modality presents performance that continues to improve. For over 50 years, several collimators have been proposed. Mainly governed by collimation parameters, the resolution-sensitivity trade-off is the factor determining the collimator the most suitable for an intended study. One alternative to the common approaches is the rotating slat collimator (RSC). In the present study, we are aiming at developing a preclinical system equipped with a RSC dedicated to mice and rats imaging, which requires both high sensitivity and spatial resolution. We investigated the resolution-sensitivity trade-offs obtained by varying different collimation parameters: (i) the slats height (H), and (ii) the gap between two consecutive slats (g), considering different intrinsic spatial resolutions. One system matrix was generated for each set of collimation parameters (H,g). Spatial resolutions, Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and sensitivity obtained for all the set of collimation parameters (H,g) were measured in the 2D projections reconstructed with ML-EM. According to our results, 20 mm high slats and a 1 mm gap were chosen as a good RSC candidate for a preclinical detection module. This collimator will ensure a sensitivity greater than 0.2% and a system spatial resolution below 1 mm, considering an intrinsic spatial resolution below 0.8 mm.

Relevance of accurate Monte Carlo modeling in nuclear medical imaging

Monte Carlo techniques have become popular in different areas of medical physics with advantage of powerful computing systems. In particular, they have been extensively applied to simulate processes involving random behavior and to quantify physical parameters that are difficult or even impossible to calculate by experimental measurements. Recent nuclear medical imaging innovations such as single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), positron emission tomography (PET), and multiple emission tomography (MET) are ideal for Monte Carlo modeling techniques because of the stochastic nature of radiation emission, transport and detection processes. Factors which have contributed to the wider use include improved models of radiation transport processes, the practicality of application with the development of acceleration schemes and the improved speed of computers. In this paper we present a derivation and methodological basis for this approach and critically review their areas of application in nuclear imaging. An overview of existing simulation programs is provided and illustrated with examples of some useful features of such sophisticated tools in connection with common computing facilities and more powerful multiple-processor parallel processing systems. Current and future trends in the field are also discussed.
