Monte Carlo investigation of electron specific energy distribution in a single cell model

Knowledge of microdosimetric quantities of certain radionuclides is important in radio immune cancer therapies. Specific energy distribution of radionuclides, which are bound to the cell, is the microdosimetric quantity essential in the process of radionuclide selection for patient tumour treatment. The aim of this paper is to establish an applicable method to determine microdosimetric quantities for various radionuclides. The established method is based on knowledge of microdosimetric quantities of monoenergetic electrons. In this paper these quantities are determined for the single-cell model for a range of electron energies up to [Formula: see text], using the Monte Carlo transport code PENELOPE. The results show that using monoenergetic specific energies, reconstruction of the specific energy of beta-emitting radionuclides can be successfully done with very high accuracy. Microdosimetric quantities share information about the physical processes involved and give insight about energy depositions, which is of use in the procedure of radionuclide selection for a given type of therapy.

Microdosimetry of X-ray-irradiated gold nanoparticles

The use of contrast agents, particularly those made of high atomic number elements like gold nanoparticles, to enhance the X-ray absorption properties of tissue has recently gained attention in the context of radiotherapy treatments. Because these contrast agents alter the secondary electron field in the irradiated medium by adding an Auger electron component, it is necessary to determine the change in the microdosimetric spectra brought about by the incorporation of such agents. Using Monte Carlo simulation, it is shown that the linear energy transfer and the beam quality factor in the vicinity of a gold nanoparticle irradiated with kilovoltage X-ray beams increase substantially when compared with irradiation without the gold nanoparticles present.

Monte Carlo mitochondrial dosimetry and microdosimetry of 131I

A mitochondrion is an organelle found in most eukaryotic cells, which produces most of the energy needed by a living cell. It has been shown that ionising radiation causes mitochondrial damage leading to apoptosis or cell death. The aim of this work was to calculate, by Monte Carlo simulation, the specific energy (z) into the mitochondria, due to Auger electrons, conversion electrons and beta emission from (131)I, where the radionuclide was carried by a vector to the cell surface and the surrounding environment. A concentric spherical geometry represents a cell and its nucleus. Three different volumes were used to represent the mitochondria; they were placed in random positions within the cytoplasm. The z produced by a single event is due to low-energy electrons (76 %) and beta particles (24 %) and the mitochondria receive a total mean z two orders of magnitude higher than that of the cell nucleus.

Pharmacokinetics and dosimetry of 188 Re-pharmaceuticals

The main objective of this review is to apportion current and new insight into the biodistribution, radiopharmacokinetics, dosimetry and cell targeting of rhenium-188 labeled radiopharmaceuticals used as therapeutic drugs. The emphasis lies on the generator obtained rhenium-188, its physical, therapeutic, dosimetric and coordinated compounds. Its use in radioimmunotherapy for lymphoma and other hematological diseases with monoclonal antibodies is discussed. Radiolabeled peptides to target cell receptors are an important field in nuclear medicine and in some research facilities are already being used, especially, somatostatin, bombesin and other peptides. Small molecules labeled with 188 Re are promising as therapeutic drugs. A review about some of the non-specific targeting molecules with therapeutic or pain palliation effect such as phosphonates, lipiodol, microparticles and other interesting molecules is included. Research on the labeling of biomolecules with the versatile rhenium-188 has contributed to the development of therapeutics with favorable pharmacokinetic and dosimetric properties for cancer treatment.
