Dynamic Programming Based Segmentation in Biomedical Imaging

Many applications in biomedical imaging have a demand on automatic detection of lines, contours, or boundaries of bones, organs, vessels, and cells. Aim is to support expert decisions in interactive applications or to include it as part of a processing pipeline for automatic image analysis. Biomedical images often suffer from noisy data and fuzzy edges. Therefore, there is a need for robust methods for contour and line detection. Dynamic programming is a popular technique that satisfies these requirements in many ways. This work gives a brief overview over approaches and applications that utilize dynamic programming to solve problems in the challenging field of biomedical imaging.

Level set method coupled with Energy Image features for brain MR image segmentation

Up until now, the noise and intensity inhomogeneity are considered one of the major drawbacks in the field of brain magnetic resonance (MR) image segmentation. This paper introduces the energy image feature approach for intensity inhomogeneity correction. Our approach of segmentation takes the advantage of image features and preserves the advantages of the level set methods in region-based active contours framework. The energy image feature represents a new image obtained from the original image when the pixels' values are replaced by local energy values computed in the 3×3 mask size. The performance and utility of the energy image features were tested and compared through two different variants of level set methods: one as the encompassed local and global intensity fitting method and the other as the selective binary and Gaussian filtering regularized level set method. The reported results demonstrate the flexibility of the energy image feature to adapt to level set segmentation framework and to perform the challenging task of brain lesion segmentation in a rather robust way.

Closed Shortest Path in the Original Coordinates with an Application to Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is one of the most mediated malignant diseases, because of its high incidence and prevalence, but principally due to its physical and psychological invasiveness. The study of this disease using computer science tools resorts often to the image segmentation operation. Image segmentation, although having been extensively studied, is still an open problem. Shortest path algorithms are extensively used to tackle this problem. There are, however, applications where the starting and ending positions of the shortest path need to be constrained, defining a closed contour enclosing a previously detected seed. Mass and calcification segmentation in mammograms and areola segmentation in digital images are two particular examples of interest within the field of breast cancer research. Usually the closed contour computation is addressed by transforming the image into polar coordinates, where the closed contour is transformed into an open contour between two opposite margins. In this work, after illustrating some of the limitations of this approach, we show how to compute the closed contour in the original coordinate space. After defining a directed acyclic graph appropriate for this task, we address the main difficulty in operating in the original coordinate space. Since small paths collapsing in the seed point are naturally favored, we modulate the cost of the edges to counterbalance this bias. A thorough evaluation is conducted with datasets from the breast cancer field. The algorithm is shown to be fast and reliable and suffers no loss in resolution.

Breast mass contour segmentation algorithm in digital mammograms

Many computer aided diagnosis (CAD) systems help radiologist on difficult task of mass detection in a breast mammogram and, besides, they also provide interpretation about detected mass. One of the most crucial information of a mass is its shape and contour, since it provides valuable information about spread ability of a mass. However, accuracy of shape recognition of a mass highly related with the precision of detected mass contours. In this work, we introduce a new segmentation algorithm, breast mass contour segmentation, based on classical seed region growing algorithm to enhance contour of a mass from a given region of interest with ability to adjust threshold value adaptively. The new approach is evaluated over a dataset with 260 masses whose contours are manually annotated by expert radiologists. The performance of the method is evaluated with respect to a set of different evaluation metrics, such as specificity, sensitivity, balanced accuracy, Yassnoff and Hausdorrf error distances. The results obtained from experimentations shows that our method outperforms the other compared methods. All the findings and details of approach are presented in detail.
