Occupational exposure assessment of magnetic fields generated by induction heating equipment—the role of spatial averaging

Improved Calculation Method of Coupling Factors for Low-Frequency Wireless Power Transfer Systems

The concept of a coupling factor was introduced in International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 62311 and 62233 to provide a product safety assessment that considers the localized exposure when an electromagnetic field (EMF) source is close to the human body. To calculate the coupling factors between the human body and EMF source, a numerical calculation should be carried out to calculate the internal quantities of the human body models. However, at frequencies below 10 MHz, the computed current density or internal electric field has computational artifacts from segmentation or discretization errors. Specifically, coupling factors are calculated based on the maximum values, which may include computational artifacts due to abnormal peaks. In this study, we propose an improved calculation method to remove computational artifacts by applying the 99.99th percentile in calculating the coupling factors without underestimation. The performance of the proposed method is verified through a comparison based on various human body models with wireless power transfer (WPT) systems and compliance with the reference levels and basic restrictions. The results indicate that the proposed method can provide uniform coupling factors by reducing the computational errors by up to 65.3% compared to a conventional method.

Exposure of Live-Line Workers to Magnetic Fields: A Dosimetric Analysis

In this paper the authors present the results of a dosimetric analysis related to the exposure of live-line workers to the magnetic fields generated by high voltage overhead lines and substations. The study extends the work published by Dawson et al. in 2002, considering more evolved anatomical models nowadays available, the new reference limits given by the 2013/35/EU Directive, and a new methodology, based on the intercomparison of two alternative solvers and the use of data filtering. Moreover, additional exposure scenarios are here considered with respect to the studies already available in literature. The results show that for the exposure scenario of high voltage live line works with bare hand method, in any analyzed position, the exposure limits for the tissues of the central nervous system, as well as for all other tissues, are never exceeded, despite in some cases the action levels are exceeded. For the exposure of workers in substations near 220 kV and 380 kV line trap coils exposure is compliant with the regulatory limits if the current flowing through the line trap does not exceed the value of 1000 A. Finally, for the exposure of workers in substations near cable connections, electric field values induced in the body are always lower than regulatory limits with a phase current value equal to 1600 A r.m.s.

Numerical assessment of low-frequency dosimetry from sampled magnetic fields

Low-frequency dosimetry is commonly assessed by evaluating the electric field in the human body using the scalar potential finite difference method. This method is effective only when the sources of the magnetic field are completely known and the magnetic vector potential can be analytically computed. The aim of the paper is to present a rigorous method to characterize the source term when only the magnetic flux density is available at discrete points, e.g. in case of field measurements. The method is based on the solution of the discrete magnetic curl equation. The system is restricted to the independent set of magnetic fluxes and circulations of magnetic vector potential using the topological information of the computational mesh. The solenoidality of the magnetic flux density is preserved using a divergence-free interpolator based on vector radial basis functions. The analysis of a benchmark problem shows that the complexity of the proposed algorithm is linearly dependent on the number of elements with a controllable accuracy. The method proposed in this paper also proves to be useful and effective when applied to a real world scenario, where the magnetic flux density is measured in proximity of a power transformer. A 8 million voxel body model is then used for the numerical dosimetric analysis. The complete assessment is completed in less than 5 min, that is more than acceptable for these problems.

Modelling of induced electric fields based on incompletely known magnetic fields

Determining the induced electric fields in the human body is a fundamental problem in bioelectromagnetics that is important for both evaluation of safety of electromagnetic fields and medical applications. However, existing techniques for numerical modelling of induced electric fields require detailed information about the sources of the magnetic field, which may be unknown or difficult to model in realistic scenarios. Here, we show how induced electric fields can accurately be determined in the case where the magnetic fields are known only approximately, e.g. based on field measurements. The robustness of our approach is shown in numerical simulations for both idealized and realistic scenarios featuring a personalized MRI-based head model. The approach allows for modelling of the induced electric fields in biological bodies directly based on real-world magnetic field measurements.

Low-frequency electrical dosimetry: research agenda of the IEEE International Committee on Electromagnetic Safety

This article treats unsettled issues in the use of numerical models of electrical dosimetry as applied to international limits on human exposure to low-frequency (typically  <  100 kHz) electromagnetic fields and contact current. The perspective in this publication is that of Subcommittee 6 of IEEE-ICES (International Committee on Electromagnetic Safety) Technical Committee 95. The paper discusses 25 issues needing attention, fitting into three general categories: induction models; electrostimulation models; and human exposure limits. Of these, 9 were voted as 'high priority' by members of Subcommittee 6. The list is presented as a research agenda for refinements in numerical modeling with applications to human exposure limits. It is likely that such issues are also important in medical and electrical product safety design applications.

In-situ electric field in human body model in different postures for wireless power transfer system in an electrical vehicle

The in-situ electric field of an adult male model in different postures is evaluated for exposure to the magnetic field leaked from a wireless power transfer system in an electrical vehicle. The transfer system is located below the centre of the vehicle body and the transferred power and frequency are 7 kW and 85 kHz, respectively. The in-situ electric field is evaluated for a human model (i) crouching near the vehicle, (ii) lying on the ground with or without his arm stretched, (iii) sitting in the driver's seat, and (iv) standing on a transmitting coil without a receiving coil. In each scenario, the maximum in-situ electric fields are lower than the allowable limit prescribed by international guidelines, although the local magnetic field strength in regions of the human body is higher than the allowable external magnetic field strength. The highest in-situ electric field is observed when the human body model is placed on the ground with his arm extended toward the coils, because of a higher magnetic field around the arm.

Evaluation of the induced electric field and compliance procedure for a wireless power transfer system in an electrical vehicle

In this study, an induced electric field in a human body is evaluated for the magnetic field leaked from a wireless power transfer system for charging an electrical vehicle. The magnetic field from the wireless power transfer system is modelled computationally, and its effectiveness is confirmed by comparison with the field measured in a previous study. The induced electric field in a human standing around the vehicle is smaller than the allowable limit prescribed in international guidelines, although the magnetic field strength in the human body is locally higher than the allowable external field strength. Correlation between the external magnetic field and the induced electric field is confirmed to be reasonable at least in the standing posture, which is the case discussed in the international standard. Based on this finding, we discussed and confirmed the applicability of a three-point magnetic field measurement at heights of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 m for safety compliance.
