Simulations of radiation pressure experiments narrow down the energy and momentum of light in matter

On chip all-optical distinguishing of independently placed distinct types of single Rayleigh particle

In order to determine whether a particle is plasmonic, dielectric, or chiral, different complex processes and chemicals are applied in lab setups and pharmaceutical industries. Sorting or categorizing a particle based on distinct optical forces can be a novel technique. When a beam of light interacts with a particle, it usually pushes the particle in the direction of the light's propagation. Counterintuitively, it can also pull the particle toward the light beam or move it toward a lateral direction. As far as we know, to date, no comprehensive report exists regarding a single optical arrangement capable of inducing entirely distinct behaviors of force for three disparate types of independently placed single Rayleigh particle. This study introduces an all-optical technique aimed at effectively sorting nanoscale Rayleigh-sized objects employing a plasmonic substrate, when each distinct type of single particle is placed over the substrate independently. Unfortunately, this proposed technique does not work for the cluster or mixture of distinct particles. In our proposed configuration, a simple linearly polarized plane wave is incident onto the plasmonic substrate, thereby engendering completely different responses from three different types of nanoparticles: Gold (plasmonic), SiO2 (dielectric), and Chiral particles. We conducted individual tests for our setup using linearly polarized plane waves at angles of 30-degree, 45-degree, and 60-degree individually. Consistent results were obtained across all angles. In each of the three distinct setups involving the aforementioned particle, a dielectric Rayleigh particle experiences an optical pulling force, a plasmonic Rayleigh particle experiences an optical pushing force, and a chiral Rayleigh particle encounters an optical lateral force. These distinctive force behaviors manifest as a result of the intricate interplay between the material properties of the nanoparticles and the characteristics of the plane-polarized beam, encompassing aspects such as plasmonic response, chirality, and refractive index. Moreover, this technique presents an environmentally sustainable and economically viable alternative to the utilization of expensive and potentially hazardous chemicals in nanoparticle sorting processes within industrial domains.

Isolated detection of elastic waves driven by the momentum of light

Electromagnetic momentum carried by light is observable through the mechanical effects radiation pressure exerts on illuminated objects. Momentum conversion from electromagnetic fields to elastic waves within a solid object proceeds through a string of electrodynamic and elastodynamic phenomena, collectively bound by momentum and energy continuity. The details of this conversion predicted by theory have yet to be validated by experiments, as it is difficult to distinguish displacements driven by momentum from those driven by heating due to light absorption. Here, we have measured temporal variations of the surface displacements induced by laser pulses reflected from a solid dielectric mirror. Ab initio modelling of momentum flow describes the transfer of momentum from the electromagnetic field to the dielectric mirror, with subsequent creation/propagation of multicomponent elastic waves. Complete consistency between predictions and absolute measurements of surface displacements offers compelling evidence of elastic transients driven predominantly by the momentum of light.

The exact mechanism of momentum conversion from light to an object has varied descriptions in the literature and experimental verifications are difficult. Here the authors do an in-depth experimental and numerical study of the momentum dynamics of elastic waves in a dielectric mirror hit by a pulsed laser beam.

Dewetting during Terahertz Vibrations of Nanoparticles

We use molecular simulations to demonstrate the formation of a vacuum layer around a vibrating nanoparticle in a liquid. This vacuum layer forms readily for high frequencies with respect to the characteristic vibrational (Einstein) frequency of the fluid, even with small amplitude vibrations. The opposite is true for low frequencies, where large amplitudes are required to demonstrate the vacuum layer. With the vacuum layer forming, the quality factor of the oscillations increases substantially. The findings provide an interpretation of our recent experiments that show the onset of high-quality resonances of nanoparticles in water ( Xiang et al. Nano Lett. 2016 , 16 , 3638 ) in the gigahertz to terahertz range.

Laser-induced ultrasonic waveform derivation and transition from a point to a homogeneous illumination of a plate

Ultrasound modeling, being an established practice, is used to study the fundamentals of light-matter interactions. Although much has been published on the matter, pressure and thermal expansion induction mechanisms in laser ultrasonics have rarely been combined, as they should, in a single ultrasonic source while the effects of its size variation have only been shown to a limited extent. In the paper, we unite these light-matter interaction mechanisms, with inclusion of lateral optical forces, into a single laser-stimulated source as it is observed in nature. With a laser pulse as a manipulable source, we simulate the multifaceted workings of light-matter interactions by exposing the distinct transients originating from different source localities as generated by different induction mechanisms. We also present a transition of simulated ultrasonic waveforms in the epicentral point on the surface of a solid plate opposite from the source while it is expanded from a point to a quasi-limitless extent for pressure and thermal expansion generation regimes. The model utilizes geometric probability theory together with Huygens' superposition principle and temporal convolutions to construct the desired waveforms out of individual Green's functions. We show how the ultrasound generation regimes stem out of a single source and how its size together with energy and momentum transfers during the light-matter interactions affect the induced ultrasonic transients.

Non-conservative optical forces

Undoubtedly, laser tweezers are the most recognized application of optically induced mechanical action. Their operation is usually described in terms of conservative forces originating from intensity gradients. However, the fundamental optical action on matter is non-conservative. We will review different manifestations of non-conservative optical forces (NCF) and discuss their dependence on the specific spatial properties of optical fields that generate them. New developments relevant to the NCF such as tractor beams and transversal forces are also discussed.

Optical manipulation from the microscale to the nanoscale: fundamentals, advances and prospects

Since the invention of optical tweezers, optical manipulation has advanced significantly in scientific areas such as atomic physics, optics and biological science. Especially in the past decade, numerous optical beams and nanoscale devices have been proposed to mechanically act on nanoparticles in increasingly precise, stable and flexible ways. Both the linear and angular momenta of light can be exploited to produce optical tractor beams, tweezers and optical torque from the microscale to the nanoscale. Research on optical forces helps to reveal the nature of light-matter interactions and to resolve the fundamental aspects, which require an appropriate description of momenta and the forces on objects in matter. In this review, starting from basic theories and computational approaches, we highlight the latest optical trapping configurations and their applications in bioscience, as well as recent advances down to the nanoscale. Finally, we discuss the future prospects of nanomanipulation, which has considerable potential applications in a variety of scientific fields and everyday life.

Nanomechanical effects of light unveil photons momentum in medium

Precision measurement on momentum transfer between light and fluid interface has many implications including resolving the intriguing nature of photons momentum in a medium. For example, the existence of Abraham pressure of light under specific experimental configuration and the predictions of Chau-Amperian formalism of optical momentum for TE and TM polarizations remain untested. Here, we quantitatively and cleanly measure nanomehanical dynamics of water surface excited by radiation pressure of a laser beam. We systematically scanned wide range of experimental parameters including long exposure times, angle of incidence, spot size and laser polarization, and used two independent pump-probe techniques to validate a nano- bump on the water surface under all the tested conditions, in quantitative agreement with the Minkowski's momentum of light. With careful experiments, we demonstrate advantages and limitations of nanometer resolved optical probing techniques and narrow down actual manifestation of optical momentum in a medium.
