Particle jumps in structural glasses

Particles in structural glasses rattle around temporary equilibrium positions, that seldom change through a process which is much faster than the relaxation time, known as particle jump. Since the relaxation of the system is due to the accumulation of many such jumps, it could be possible to connect the single particle short time motion to the macroscopic relaxation by understanding the features of the jump dynamics. Here we review recent results in this research direction, clarifying the features of particle jumps that have been understood and those that are still under investigation, and examining the role of particle jumps in different theories of the glass transition.

Mode-coupling theory for the slow collective dynamics of fluids adsorbed in disordered porous media

We derive a mode-coupling theory for the slow dynamics of fluids confined in disordered porous media represented by spherical particles randomly placed in space. Its equations display the usual nonlinear structure met in this theoretical framework, except for a linear contribution to the memory kernel which adds to the usual quadratic term. The coupling coefficients involve structural quantities which are specific of fluids evolving in random environments and have expressions which are consistent with those found in related problems. Numerical solutions for two simple models with pure hard core interactions lead to the prediction of a variety of glass transition scenarios, which are either continuous or discontinuous and include the possibility of higher-order singularities and glass-glass transitions. The main features of the dynamics in the two most generic cases are reviewed and illustrated with detailed computations. Moreover, a reentry phenomenon is predicted in the low fluid-high matrix density regime and is interpreted as the signature of a de-correlation mechanism by fluid-fluid collisions competing with the localization effect of the solid matrix.

Thermodynamic−Kinetic Correlations in Supercooled Liquids: A Critical Survey of Experimental Data and Predictions of the Random First-Order Transition Theory of Glasses

Thermodynamics and kinetics are thought to be linked in glass transitions. The quantitative predictions of alpha-relaxation activation barriers provided by the theory of glasses based on random first-order transitions are compared with the experimental results for 44 substances. The agreement found between the predicted activation energies near T(g) and experiment is excellent. These predictions depend on the configurational heat capacity change on vitrification and the entropy of melting the crystal which are experimental inputs.

Minimal potentials with very many minima

We demonstrate, by construction, that simple renormalizable matrix potentials with S(N), as opposed to O(N), symmetry can exhibit an exponentially large number of inequivalent deep local minima.
