Kovacs effect and fluctuation–dissipation relations in 1D kinetically constrained models

Strong nonexponential relaxation and memory effects in a fluid with nonlinear drag

We analyze the dynamical evolution of a fluid with nonlinear drag, for which binary collisions are elastic, described at the kinetic level by the Enskog-Fokker-Planck equation. This model system, rooted in the theory of nonlinear Brownian motion, displays a really complex behavior when quenched to low temperatures. Its glassy response is controlled by a long-lived nonequilibrium state, independent of the degree of nonlinearity and also of the Brownian-Brownian collisions rate. The latter property entails that this behavior persists in the collisionless case, where the fluid is described by the nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation. The observed response, which includes nonexponential, algebraic, relaxation, and strong memory effects, presents scaling properties: the time evolution of the temperature-for both relaxation and memory effects-falls onto a master curve, regardless of the details of the experiment. To account for the observed behavior in simulations, it is necessary to develop an extended Sonine approximation for the kinetic equation-which considers not only the fourth cumulant but also the sixth one.

Linear response in the uniformly heated granular gas

We analyze the linear response properties of the uniformly heated granular gas. The intensity of the stochastic driving fixes the value of the granular temperature in the nonequilibrium steady state reached by the system. Here, we investigate two specific situations. First, we look into the "direct" relaxation of the system after a single (small) jump of the driving intensity. This study is carried out by two different methods. Not only do we linearize the evolution equations around the steady state, but we also derive generalized out-of-equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation relations for the relevant response functions. Second, we investigate the behavior of the system in a more complex experiment, specifically a Kovacs-like protocol with two jumps in the driving. The emergence of an anomalous Kovacs response is explained in terms of the properties of the direct relaxation function: it is the second mode changing sign at the critical value of the inelasticity that demarcates anomalous from normal behavior. The analytical results are compared with numerical simulations of the kinetic equation, and a good agreement is found.

Kovacs-like memory effect in driven granular gases

While memory effects have been reported for dense enough disordered systems such as glasses, we show here by a combination of analytical and simulation techniques that they are also intrinsic to the dynamics of dilute granular gases. By means of a certain driving protocol, we prepare the gas in a state where the granular temperature T coincides with its long time limit. However, T does not subsequently remain constant but exhibits a nonmonotonic evolution before reaching its nonequilibrium steady value. The corresponding so-called Kovacs hump displays a normal behavior for weak dissipation (as observed in molecular systems) but is reversed under strong dissipation, where it, thus, becomes anomalous.

Kovacs effect in the one-dimensional Ising model: a linear response analysis

We analyze the so-called Kovacs effect in the one-dimensional Ising model with Glauber dynamics. We consider small enough temperature jumps, for which a linear response theory has been recently derived. Within this theory, the Kovacs hump is directly related to the monotonic relaxation function of the energy. The analytical results are compared with extensive Monte Carlo simulations, and an excellent agreement is found. Remarkably, the position of the maximum in the Kovacs hump depends on the fact that the true asymptotic behavior of the relaxation function is different from the stretched exponential describing the relevant part of the relaxation at low temperatures.

Memory effects in the relaxation of the Gaussian trap model

We investigate the memory effect in a simple model for glassy relaxation, a trap model with a Gaussian density of states. In this model, thermal equilibrium is reached at all finite temperatures and we therefore can consider jumps from low to high temperatures in addition to the quenches usually considered in aging studies. We show that the evolution of the energy following the Kovacs protocol can approximately be expressed as a difference of two monotonously decaying functions and thus show the existence of a so-called Kovacs hump whenever these functions are not single exponentials. It is well established that the Kovacs effect also occurs in the linear response regime, and we show that most of the gross features do not change dramatically when large temperature jumps are considered. However, there is one distinguishing feature that only exists beyond the linear regime, which we discuss in detail. For the memory experiment with inverted temperatures, i.e., jumping up and then down again, we find a very similar behavior apart from an opposite sign of the hump.

Activated aging dynamics and negative fluctuation-dissipation ratios

In glassy materials, aging proceeds at large times via thermal activation. We show that this can lead to negative dynamical response functions and novel and well-defined violations of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, in particular, negative fluctuation-dissipation ratios. Our analysis is based on detailed theoretical and numerical results for the activated aging regime of simple kinetically constrained models. The results are relevant to a variety of physical situations, such as aging in glass formers, thermally activated domain growth, and granular compaction.

Observable dependent quasi-equilibrium in slow dynamics

We present examples demonstrating that quasi-equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation behavior at short time differences is not a generic feature of systems with slow nonequilibrium dynamics. We analyze in detail the nonequilibrium fluctuation-dissipation ratio X(t, t(w)) associated with a defect-pair observable in the Glauber-Ising spin chain. It turns out that X not = 1 throughout the short-time regime and in particular X(t(w), t(w)) = 3/4 for t(w) --> infinity. The analysis is extended to observables detecting defects at a finite distance from each other, where similar violations of quasi-equilibrium behavior are found. We discuss our results in the context of metastable states, which suggests that a violation of short-time quasi-equilibrium behavior could occur in general glassy systems for appropriately chosen observables.
