Effect of Co doping on the structural, optical and magnetic properties of ZnO nanoparticles

Suppression of Visible Emission in Low-Temperature Synthesized Cobalt-Doped ZnO Nanoparticles and Their Photosensing Applications

Cobalt (Co)-doped ZnO nanoparticles have been synthesized at 100 °C using a simple chemical technique, without post-deposition annealing. These nanoparticles are of excellent crystallinity and show a significant reduction in defect density upon Co-doping. By varying the Co solution concentration, it is observed that oxygen-vacancy-related defects are suppressed at lower Co-doping, while the defect density shows an increasing trend at higher doping densities. This suggests that mild doping can significantly suppress the defects in ZnO for electronic and optoelectronic applications. The effect of Co-doping is studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence (PL), electrical conductivity, and Mott-Schottky plots. Photodetectors fabricated using pure and Co-doped ZnO nanoparticles show a noticeable reduction in the response time upon Co-doping, which again affirms the reduction in the defect density after Co-doping.

Diluted magnetic semiconductor properties in TM doped ZnO nanoparticles

The hydrothermal method was used to create dilute magnetic semiconductor nanoparticles of Zn_1−xCo_xO (x = 0, 0.01, 0.05, 0.09). The effect of cobalt doping on the microstructure, morphological and optical properties of Zn_1−xCo_xO was also studied and the Co doping to host ZnO was confirmed from XRD and EDX analysis. The structural analysis showed that doping of cobalt into ZnO decreased the crystallinity, but the preferred orientation didn't change. SEM analysis revealed that the cobalt dopant did not have a strong influence on the shape of the synthesized nanoparticles. No defect-related absorption peaks were observed in the UV-Vis spectra. The crystallinity of the doped samples was improved by high growth temperature and long growth time. Ferromagnetic behavior above room temperature was detected in co-doped ZnO nanoparticles. The ferromagnetic behavior increased with increasing Co (up to x = 0.05) doping. The ferromagnetic behavior declined when the Co content was further increased. Related research shows that doped ZnO nanoparticles have better dielectric, electrical conductivity, and magnetic properties than pure ZnO. This high ferromagnetism is usually a response reported for dilute magnetic semiconductors. These semiconductor nanoparticles were further used to designed spintronic based applications.

The enlarged central part M–H loop shows for the Co = 0.09 doped ZnO sample, the ferromagnetic (FM) behavior increased, i.e., a M_r of 0.2412 emu g⁻¹ with a H_c of 85 Oe.

Cobalt-Assisted Morphology and Assembly Control of Co-Doped ZnO Nanoparticles

The morphology of metal oxide nanostructures influences the response of the materials in a given application. In addition to changing the composition, doping can also modify the morphology of a host nanomaterial. Herein, we determine the effect of dopant concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time on the morphology and assembly of Co_xZn_1−xO nanoparticles synthesized through non-aqueous sol-gel in benzyl alcohol. With the increase of the atom % of cobalt incorporated from 0 to 15, the shape of the nanoparticles changes from near spherical, to irregular, and finally to triangular. The tendency of the particles to assemble increases in the same direction, with Co_0.05Zn_0.95O consisting of non-assembled particles, whereas Co_0.15Zn_0.85O consists of triangular nanoparticles forming spherical structures. The morphology and assembly process are also sensitive to the reaction temperature. The assembly process is found to occur during the nucleation or the early stages of particle growth. The cobalt ions promote the change in the shape during the growth stage of the nanoparticles.

New Insights on the Burstein-Moss Shift and Band Gap Narrowing in Indium-Doped Zinc Oxide Thin Films

The Burstein-Moss shift and band gap narrowing of sputtered indium-doped zinc oxide (IZO) thin films are investigated as a function of carrier concentrations. The optical band gap shifts below the carrier concentration of 5.61 × 10¹⁹ cm^-3 are well-described by the Burstein-Moss model. For carrier concentrations higher than 8.71 × 10¹⁹ cm^-3 the shift decreases, indicating that band gap narrowing mechanisms are increasingly significant and are competing with the Burstein-Moss effect. The incorporation of In causes the resistivity to decrease three orders of magnitude. As the mean-free path of carriers is less than the crystallite size, the resistivity is probably affected by ionized impurities as well as defect scattering mechanisms, but not grain boundary scattering. The c lattice constant as well as film stress is observed to increase in stages with increasing carrier concentration. The asymmetric XPS Zn 2p_3/2 peak in the film with the highest carrier concentration of 7.02 × 10²⁰ cm^-3 suggests the presence of stacking defects in the ZnO lattice. The Raman peak at 274 cm^-1 is attributed to lattice defects introduced by In dopants.

Paramagnetism of cobalt-doped ZnO nanoparticles obtained by microwave solvothermal synthesis

Zinc oxide nanopowders doped with 1-15 mol % cobalt were produced by the microwave solvothermal synthesis (MSS) technique. The obtained nanoparticles were annealed at 800 °C in nitrogen (99.999%) and in synthetic air. The material nanostructure was investigated by means of the following techniques: X-ray diffraction (XRD), helium pycnometry density, specific surface area (SSA), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and with magnetometry using superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). Irrespective of the Co content, nanoparticles in their initial state present a similar morphology. They are composed of loosely agglomerated spherical particles with wurtzite-type crystal structure with crystallites of a mean size of 30 nm. Annealing to temperatures of up to 800 °C induced the growth of crystallites up to a maximum of 2 μm in diameter. For samples annealed in high purity nitrogen, the precipitation of metallic α-Co was detected for a Co content of 5 mol % or more. For samples annealed in synthetic air, no change of phase structure was detected, except for precipitation of Co3O4 for a Co content of 15 mol %. The results of the magentometry investigation indicated that all as-synthesized samples displayed paramagnetic properties with a contribution of anti-ferromagnetic coupling of Co-Co pairs. After annealing in synthetic air, the samples remained paramagnetic and samples annealed under nitrogen flow showed a magnetic response under the influences of a magnetic field, likely related to the precipitation of metallic Co in nanoparticles.

A Review on Chemical Synthesis, Characterization and Optical Properties of Nanocrystalline Transition Metal Doped Dilute Magnetic Semiconductors

Nanomaterials have fascinated researchers in recent years because these materials exhibit unusual optical, magnetic and electrical properties as compared to their bulk counterparts. Incorporating impurity ions into a semiconducting host to extend its properties has been one of the most important techniques that paved the way for the modern technology based on spintronic devices. Over the past few years, oxide based dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMSs) have gained remarkable interest due to the possibility of inducing room temperature ferromagnetism. This review describes the experimental developments and optical properties of oxide based DMSs, including the recent results on ZnO, CdO and In2O3 based systems. Optical properties of transition metal (TM)-doped ZnO, CdO and In2O3 dilute magnetic semiconductor nanoparticles show red shift in energy band gaps. Such types of phenomena are attributed to sp-d exchange interactions between band electrons and localized d-electrons of the substituted transition metal ions. Table of Contents

Effects of substitutional Li on the ferromagnetic response of Li co-doped ZnO:Co nanoparticles

Li co-doped ZnO:Co (Zn0.96-yCo0.04LiyO , y ≤ 0.1) nanoparticles were synthesized by the sol-gel technique and the correlation between the structural, electronic and magnetic properties was investigated. All the samples show a single phase hexagonal (wurtzite) ZnO structure and no secondary phases were detected. Variational trends in lattice parameters suggest the incorporation of Li in the ZnO:Co system in both substitutional and interstitial sites. Detailed electronic studies have been performed by high-resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to determine the states of Zn, O, Co and Li. It was determined that Co substitutes at Zn sites (CoZn) while the O vacancy and Zn defects did not show much variation with increasing Li concentration. Deconvolution of the Li XPS peak showed a clear non-monotonic trend in the variation of the substitutional Li (LiZn) and interstitial Li (Lii) defects with increasing Li concentration in the particles. The magnetization study of the samples showed that the variation of the moment closely followed the trend of variation of the LiZn defects. The data are interpreted in terms of substitutional Li acting as a hole dopant and optimizing the conditions for ferromagnetism in Co-doped ZnO. Interstitial Li is not seen to be playing this role.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles for selective destruction of tumor cells and potential for drug delivery applications

IMPORTANCE OF THE FIELD

Metal oxide nanoparticles, including zinc oxide, are versatile platforms for biomedical applications and therapeutic intervention. There is an urgent need to develop new classes of anticancer agents, and recent studies demonstrate that ZnO nanomaterials hold considerable promise.

AREAS COVERED IN THIS REVIEW

This review analyzes the biomedical applications of metal oxide and ZnO nanomaterials under development at the experimental, preclinical and clinical levels. A discussion regarding the advantages, approaches and limitations surrounding the use of metal oxide nanoparticles for cancer applications and drug delivery is presented. The scope of this article is focused on ZnO, and other metal oxide nanomaterial systems, and their proposed mechanisms of cytotoxic action, as well as current approaches to improve their targeting and cytotoxicity against cancer cells.

Fluorescent dye encapsulated ZnO particles with cell-specific toxicity for potential use in biomedical applications

Fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-encapsulated SiO(2) core-shell particles with a nanoscale ZnO finishing layer have been synthesized for the first time as multifunctional "smart" nanostructures. Detailed characterization studies confirmed the formation of an outer ZnO layer on the SiO(2)-FITC core. These approximately 200 nm sized particles showed promise toward cell imaging and cellular uptake studies using the bacterium Escherichia coli and Jurkat cancer cells, respectively. The FITC encapsulated ZnO particles demonstrated excellent selectivity in preferentially killing Jurkat cancer cells with minimal toxicity to normal primary immune cells (18% and 75% viability remaining, respectively, after exposure to 60 microg/ml) and inhibited the growth of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria at concentrations > or =250-500 microg/ml (for Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, respectively). These results indicate that the novel FITC encapsulated multifunctional particles with nanoscale ZnO surface layer can be used as smart nanostructures for particle tracking, cell imaging, antibacterial treatments and cancer therapy.
