Stability mechanisms for plate-like nanoparticles immersed in a macroion dispersion

Structural and Double Layer Forces between Silica Surfaces in Suspensions of Negatively Charged Nanoparticles

Direct force measurements between negatively charged silica microparticles are carried out in suspensions of like-charged nanoparticles with atomic force microscopy (AFM). In agreement with previous studies, oscillatory force profiles are observed at larger separation distances. At smaller distances, however, soft and strongly repulsive forces are present. These forces are caused by double layer repulsion between the like-charged surfaces and can be quantitatively interpreted with the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) model. However, the PB model must be adapted to a strongly asymmetric electrolyte to capture the nonexponential nature of these forces. Thereby, the nanoparticles are modeled as highly charged co-ions, while the counter ions are monovalent. This model permits extraction of the effective charge of the nanoparticles, which is well comparable to the one obtained from electrophoresis. The PB model also explains the presence of a particle-free layer close to the interface.

Long-range forces and charge inversions in model charged colloidal dispersions at finite concentration

In charged colloidal dispersion systems the interest is in finding their stability conditions, phase transitions, and transport properties, either in bulk or confinement, among other physicochemical quantities, for which the knowledge of the dispersions' molecular structure and the associated macroion-macroion forces is crucial. To investigate these phenomena simple models have been proposed. Most of the theoretical and simulation studies on charged particles suspensions are at infinite dilution conditions. Hence, these studies have been focused on the electrolyte structure around one or two isolated central particle(s), where phenomena as charge reversal, charge inversion and surface charge amplification have been shown to be relevant. However, experimental studies at finite volume fraction exhibit interesting phenomenology which imply very long-range correlations. A simple, yet useful, model is the Colloidal Primitive Model, in which the colloidal dispersion is modeled as a mixture of size (and charge) asymmetrical hard spheres, at finite volume fraction. In this paper we review recent integral equations solutions for this model, where very long-range attractive-repulsive forces, as well as new long-range, giant charge inversions are reported. The calculated macroions radial distribution functions, charge distributions, and macroion-macroion forces are qualitatively consistent with existing experimental results, and Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations.

Electrostatic interaction in the presence of dielectric interfaces and polarization-induced like-charge attraction

Electrostatic polarization is important in many nano- and micro-scale physical systems such as colloidal suspensions, biopolymers, and nanomaterials assembly. The calculation of polarization potential requires an efficient algorithm for solving 3D Poisson's equation. We have developed a useful image charge method to rapid evaluation of the Green's function of the Poisson's equation in the presence of spherical dielectric discontinuities. This paper presents an extensive study of this method by giving a convergence analysis and developing a coarse-graining algorithm. The use of the coarse graining could reduce the number of image charges to around a dozen, by 1-2 orders of magnitude. We use the algorithm to investigate the interaction force between likely charged spheres in different dielectric environments. We find the size and charge asymmetry leads to an attraction between like charges, in agreement with existing results. Furthermore, we study three-body interactions and find, in the presence of an external interface, that the interaction force depends on the curvature of the interface and performs a nonmonotonic electrostatic force.

Effects of mixed discrete surface charges on the electrical double layer

Adsorption of surface coions and charge reversal are induced at the electrical double layer of a wall charged with positive and negative surface sites next to an electrolyte solution. While for the considered surface charge density these effects are found over a wide range of conditions, they are not observed for the typically employed surface models in equivalent conditions. Important consequences in electrophoresis experiments for different colloids with equal effective surface charge density are foreseen. This study is carried out by means of molecular dynamics simulations.
