Thermodynamic signature of the dynamic glass transition in hard spheres

Role of diffusion in crystallization of hard-sphere colloids

Vital for a variety of industries, colloids also serve as an excellent model to probe phase transitions at the individual particle level. Despite extensive studies, origins of the glass transition in hard-sphere colloids discovered about 30 y ago remain elusive. Results of our numerical simulations and asymptotic analysis suggest that cessation of long-time particle diffusivity does not suppress crystallization of a metastable liquid-phase hard-sphere colloid. Once a crystallite forms, its growth is then controlled by the particle diffusion in the depletion zone surrounding the crystallite. Using simulations, we evaluate the solid-liquid interface mobility from data on colloidal crystallization in terrestrial and microgravity experiments and demonstrate that there is no drastic difference between the respective mobility values. The insight into the effect of vanishing particle mobility and particle sedimentation on crystallization of colloids will help engineer colloidal materials with controllable structure.

Crossover from equilibration to aging: Nonequilibrium theory versus simulations

Understanding glasses and the glass transition requires comprehending the nature of the crossover from the ergodic (or equilibrium) regime, in which the stationary properties of the system have no history dependence, to the mysterious glass transition region, where the measured properties are nonstationary and depend on the protocol of preparation. In this work we use nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to test the main features of the crossover predicted by the molecular version of the recently developed multicomponent nonequilibrium self-consistent generalized Langevin equation theory. According to this theory, the glass transition involves the abrupt passage from the ordinary pattern of full equilibration to the aging scenario characteristic of glass-forming liquids. The same theory explains that this abrupt transition will always be observed as a blurred crossover due to the unavoidable finiteness of the time window of any experimental observation. We find that within their finite waiting-time window, the simulations confirm the general trends predicted by the theory.

Population annealing simulations of a binary hard-sphere mixture

Population annealing is a sequential Monte Carlo scheme well suited to simulating equilibrium states of systems with rough free energy landscapes. Here we use population annealing to study a binary mixture of hard spheres. Population annealing is a parallel version of simulated annealing with an extra resampling step that ensures that a population of replicas of the system represents the equilibrium ensemble at every packing fraction in an annealing schedule. The algorithm and its equilibration properties are described, and results are presented for a glass-forming fluid composed of a 50/50 mixture of hard spheres with diameter ratio of 1.4:1. For this system, we obtain precise results for the equation of state in the glassy regime up to packing fractions φ≈0.60 and study deviations from the Boublik-Mansoori-Carnahan-Starling-Leland equation of state. For higher packing fractions, the algorithm falls out of equilibrium and a free volume fit predicts jamming at packing fraction φ≈0.667. We conclude that population annealing is an effective tool for studying equilibrium glassy fluids and the jamming transition.

Equilibrium Sampling of Hard Spheres up to the Jamming Density and Beyond

We implement and optimize a particle-swap Monte Carlo algorithm that allows us to thermalize a polydisperse system of hard spheres up to unprecedentedly large volume fractions, where previous algorithms and experiments fail to equilibrate. We show that no glass singularity intervenes before the jamming density, which we independently determine through two distinct nonequilibrium protocols. We demonstrate that equilibrium fluid and nonequilibrium jammed states can have the same density, showing that the jamming transition cannot be the end point of the fluid branch.

Equilibration of concentrated hard-sphere fluids

We report a systematic molecular dynamics study of the isochoric equilibration of hard-sphere fluids in their metastable regime close to the glass transition. The thermalization process starts with the system prepared in a nonequilibrium state with the desired final volume fraction ϕ for which we can obtain a well-defined nonequilibrium static structure factor S(0)(k;ϕ). The evolution of the α-relaxation time τ(α)(k) and long-time self-diffusion coefficient D(L) as a function of the evolution time t(w) is then monitored for an array of volume fractions. For a given waiting time the plot of τ(α)(k;ϕ,t(w)) as a function of ϕ exhibits two regimes corresponding to samples that have fully equilibrated within this waiting time [ϕ≤ϕ(c)(t(w))] and to samples for which equilibration is not yet complete [ϕ≥ϕ(c)(t(w))]. The crossover volume fraction ϕ(c)(t(w)) increases with t(w) but seems to saturate to a value ϕ(a)≡ϕ(c)(t(w)→∞)≈0.582. We also find that the waiting time t(w)(eq)(ϕ) required to equilibrate a system grows faster than the corresponding equilibrium relaxation time, t(w)(eq)(ϕ)≈0.27[τ(α)(eq)(k;ϕ)](1.43), and that both characteristic times increase strongly as ϕ approaches ϕ(a), thus suggesting that the measurement of equilibrium properties at and above ϕ(a) is experimentally impossible.
