Rearrangements during slow compression of a jammed two-dimensional emulsion

As amorphous materials get jammed, both geometric and dynamic heterogeneity are observed. We investigate the correlation between the local geometric heterogeneity and local rearrangements in a slowly compressed bidisperse quasi-two-dimensional emulsion system. The compression is driven by evaporation of the continuous phase and causes the area packing fraction to increase from 0.88 to 0.99. We quantify the structural heterogeneity of the system using the radical Voronoi tessellation following the method of Rieser et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 088001 (2016)]0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.116.088001. We define two structural quantities characterizing local structure, the first of which considers nearest neighbors and the second of which includes information from second-nearest neighbors. We find that droplets in heterogeneous local regions are more likely to have local rearrangements. These rearrangements are generally T1 events where two droplets converge toward a void, and two droplets move away from the void to make room for the converging droplets. Thus, the presence of the voids tends to orient the T1 events. The presence of a correlation between the structural quantities and the rearrangement dynamics remains qualitatively unchanged over the entire range of packing fractions observed.

Bubble-raft collapse and the nonequilibrium dynamics of two-state elastica

We report on the collapse of bubble rafts under compression in a closed rectangular geometry. A bubble raft is a single layer of bubbles at the air-water interface. A collapse event occurs when bubbles submerge beneath the neighboring bubbles under compression, causing the structure of the bubble raft to go from single-layer to multilayer. We studied the collapse dynamics as a function of compression velocity. At higher compression velocity we observe a more uniform distribution of collapse events, whereas at lower compression velocities the collapse events accumulate at the system boundaries. We propose that this system can be understood in terms of a linear elastic sheet coupled to a local internal (Ising) degree of freedom. The two internal states, which represent one bubble layer versus two, couple to the elasticity of the sheet by locally changing the reference state of the material. By exploring the collapse dynamics of the bubble raft, one may address the basic nonlinear mechanics of a number of complex systems in which elastic stress is coupled to local internal variables.

Experimental observation of local rearrangements in dense quasi-two-dimensional emulsion flow

We experimentally study rearranging regions in slow athermal flow by observing the flow of a concentrated oil-in-water emulsion in a thin chamber with a constricting hopper shape. The gap of the chamber is smaller than the droplet diameters, so that the droplets are compressed into quasi-two-dimensional pancakes. We focus on localized rearrangements known as "T1 events" where four droplets exchange neighbors. Flowing droplets are deformed due to forces from neighboring droplets, and these deformations are decreased by nearby T1 events, with a spatial dependence related to the local structure. We see a tendency of the T1 events to occur in small clusters.

Structural components and morphogenetic mechanics of the zebrafish yolk extension, a developmental module

The yolk extension (YE) appears to be a novel developmental module that has been inserted into the phylotypic period of teleostean development, specifically in the order Cypriniformes. The zebrafish YE informs the study of morphogenetic movements reshaping ventral tissues because (1) this trait is easily visible, so disruptions are easy to score; (2) its ontogenesis occurs quickly; and (3) the yolk cell isolates the tissues elongating the ventrum from the rest of the embryo, serving as a three-dimensional in vivo "tissue culture." We determined that three histological compartments comprise the structural components of the YE: (1) the internal yolk cell; (2) the mesendodermal mantle external to the yolk cell; and (3) the external embryonic integument, consisting of an embryonic epidermis plus enveloping layer cells. These structural components interact with one another in a hierarchical manner, resulting in the morphogenesis of the elongated and tubular embryonic zebrafish ventrum as the cylindrical YE forms. Time-lapse videomicroscopy and experimental manipulation show that the yolk mass is a cohesive, viscoelastic foam, which resists compression. Moreover, as the mesodermal mantle participates in tubulation of the posterior trunk, Kupffer's Vesicle, the organ of laterality in teleosts, separates from the posterior pole of the yolk syncytial layer. Additionally, the embryonic integument becomes contractile over the posterior yolk cell, constricting the yolk mass to form the YE. These findings constitute an initial assessment of the morphogenetic mechanics underlying formation of the YE developmental module in zebrafish.
