Jahn-Teller distortions and the magnetic order in the perovskite manganites

Intrinsic Magnetic Topological Insulator State Induced by the Jahn-Teller Effect

The Jahn-Teller effect is a geometrical distortion which lowers the system symmetry and lifts orbital degeneracy in molecules and solids. It affects a wide range of properties, including magnetic and band structures. In this work we propose a family of Cr-containing intrinsic magnetic topological insulator materials which are subjected to a pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect-CrBi₂Se₄, CrBi₂Te₂Se₂, and CrBi₂Te₄. Using first-principles calculations we study their properties and investigate the impact of Jahn-Teller distortions on the electronic and magnetic properties. We show that these distortions can significantly affect magnetic anisotropy energy and band structure. Without the distortions accounted for, all three of the compounds exhibit a semimetallic band structure. The distortions open a band gap, which in the cases of CrBi₂Te₂Se₂ and CrBi₂Te₄ is inverted. We also investigate the CrBi₂Te₂Se₂ and CrBi₂Te₄ surface band structure and demonstrate that the surface states have a topological origin.

Evolution of Griffiths phase and critical behaviour of La1-x Pb x MnO3±y solid solutions

Polycrystalline La1-x Pb x MnO3±y (x = 0.3, 0.35, 0.4) solid solutions were prepared by solid state reaction method and their magnetic properties have been investigated. Rietveld refinement of x-ray powder diffraction patterns showed that all samples are single phase and crystallized with the rhombohedral structure in the R-3c space group. A second order paramagnetic to ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition was observed for all materials. The Griffiths phase (GP), identified from the temperature dependence of the inverse susceptibility, was suppressed by increasing magnetic field and showed a significant dependence on A-site chemical substitution. The critical behaviour of the compounds was investigated near to their Curie temperatures, using intrinsic magnetic field data. The critical exponents (β, γ and δ) are close to the mean-field approximation values for all three compounds. The observed mean-field like behaviour is a consequence of the GP and the formation of FM clusters. Long-range FM order is established as the result of long-range interactions between FM clusters. The magnetocaloric effect was studied in terms of the isothermal entropy change. Our study shows that the material with the lowest chemical substitution (x = 0.3) has the highest potential (among the three compounds) as magnetic refrigerant, owing to its higher relative cooling power (258 J kg-1 at 5 T field) and a magnetic phase transition near room temperature.

Learning from Correlations Based on Local Structure: Rare-Earth Nickelates Revisited

Statistical analysis of local atomic distortions in crystalline materials is a powerful tool for understanding coupled electronic and structural phase transitions in transition metal compounds. The analyses of such complex materials, however, often require significant domain knowledge to recognize limitations in the available data, whether it be experimentally reported crystal structures, property measurements, or computed quantities, and to understand when additional experiments or simulations may be necessary. Here we show how additional descriptive statistics and computational experiments can help researchers explicitly recognize these limitations and fill in missing gaps by constructing amplitude ( a) and normalized-amplitude ( n) distortion-mode property correlation-coefficient heat maps, aCCHMs and nCCHMs, respectively. We demonstrate this utility within the rare-earth nickelate perovskites RNiO₃ (R = rare earth ≠ La), which exhibit antiferromagnetic and metal-insulator transitions with crystallographic symmetry breaking, and analyze the CCHMs obtained from experimental and first-principles derived symmetry modes. In contrast with the crystallographic trends gleaned from the reported experimental structures, the equilibrium structures obtained from density functional theory indicate that the Jahn-Teller distortion mode plays a negligible role in affecting the Néel temperature. We explain this discrepancy and discuss how different researchers might draw disparate conclusions from the same evidence, in particular from aCCHMs and nCCHMs. Last, we propose a general method for utilizing CCHMs for screening large databases of structures.

A possibility of high spin hole states in doped CoO2 layered systems

We introduce and investigate an effective five-band model for t2g and eg electrons to describe doped cobalt oxides with Co(3+) and Co(4+) ions in two-dimensional CoO2 triangular lattice layers, as in Na1-xCoO2. The effective Hamiltonian includes anisotropic kinetic energy (due to both direct Co-Co and indirect Co-O-Co hoppings), on-site Coulomb interactions parameterized by intraorbital Hubbard repulsion U and full Hund's exchange tensor, crystal field terms and Jahn-Teller static distortions. We study it using correlated wave functions on 6 × 6 clusters with periodic boundary conditions. The computations indicate a low S = 0 spin to high S = 2 spin abrupt transition in the undoped systems when increasing strength of the crystal field, while intermediate S = 1 spins are not found. Surprisingly, for the investigated realistic Hamiltonian parameters describing low-spin states in CoO2 planes, doping generates high S = 5/2 spins at Co(4+) ions that are pairwise bound into singlets, seen here as pairs of up and down spins. It is found that such singlet pairs self-organize at higher doping into lines of magnetic ions with coexisting antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic bonds between them, forming stripe-like structures. The ground states are insulating within the investigated range of doping because computed HOMO-LUMO gaps are never small enough.

Fingerprints of spin-orbital entanglement in transition metal oxides

The concept of spin-orbital entanglement on superexchange bonds in transition metal oxides is introduced and explained on several examples. It is shown that spin-orbital entanglement in superexchange models destabilizes the long-range (spin and orbital) order and may lead either to a disordered spin-liquid state or to novel phases at low temperature which arise from strongly frustrated interactions. Such novel ground states cannot be described within the conventionally used mean field theory which separates spin and orbital degrees of freedom. Even in cases where the ground states are disentangled, spin-orbital entanglement occurs in excited states and may become crucial for a correct description of physical properties at finite temperature. As an important example of this behaviour we present spin-orbital entanglement in the RV O(3) perovskites, with R = La,Pr,…,Y b,Lu, where the finite temperature properties of these compounds can be understood only using entangled states: (i) the thermal evolution of the optical spectral weights, (ii) the dependence of the transition temperatures for the onset of orbital and magnetic order on the ionic radius in the phase diagram of the RV O(3) perovskites, and (iii) the dimerization observed in the magnon spectra for the C-type antiferromagnetic phase of Y V O(3). Finally, it is shown that joint spin-orbital excitations in an ordered phase with coexisting antiferromagnetic and alternating orbital order introduce topological constraints for the hole propagation and will thus radically modify the transport properties in doped Mott insulators where hole motion implies simultaneous spin and orbital excitations.

Onset and melting of local orbital order

The onset and melting of locally staggered charge/orbital correlations is investigated within a two-orbital correlated electron model with inter-orbital and inter-site Coulomb interactions. The CE-type orbital correlation exhibits a sharp onset close to the Curie temperature and rapid thermal melting thereafter, which provides quantitative understanding of the (π/2,π/2,0) feature observed in neutron scattering experiments on La(0.7)(Ca(y)Sr(1-y))(0.3)MnO(3) single crystals. In the zig-zag AF state, the CE-type orbital correlations are found to be even more readily stabilized, but only within a narrow doping regime around x = 0.5.

Jahn-Teller mechanism of stripe formation in doped layered La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO4 nickelates

We introduce an effective model for e(g) electrons to describe quasi-two-dimensional layered La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4) nickelates and study it using correlated wavefunctions on 8 × 8 and 6 × 6 clusters. The effective Hamiltonian includes the kinetic energy, on-site Coulomb interactions for e(g) electrons (intraorbital U and Hund's exchange J(H)) and the coupling between e(g) electrons and Jahn-Teller distortions (static modes). The experimental ground state phases with inhomogeneous charge, spin and orbital order at the dopings x = 1/3 and 1/2 are reproduced very well by the model. Although the Jahn-Teller distortions are weak, we show that they play a crucial role and stabilize the observed cooperative charge, magnetic and orbital order in the form of a diagonal stripe phase at x = 1/3 doping and a chequerboard phase at x = 1/2 doping.
