Geometric Phase of a Transmon in a Dissipative Quantum Circuit

Superconducting circuits reveal themselves as promising physical devices with multiple uses. Within those uses, the fundamental concept of the geometric phase accumulated by the state of a system shows up recurrently, as, for example, in the construction of geometric gates. Given this framework, we study the geometric phases acquired by a paradigmatic setup: a transmon coupled to a superconductor resonating cavity. We do so both for the case in which the evolution is unitary and when it is subjected to dissipative effects. These models offer a comprehensive quantum description of an anharmonic system interacting with a single mode of the electromagnetic field within a perfect or dissipative cavity, respectively. In the dissipative model, the non-unitary effects arise from dephasing, relaxation, and decay of the transmon coupled to its environment. Our approach enables a comparison of the geometric phases obtained in these models, leading to a thorough understanding of the corrections introduced by the presence of the environment.

Internal loss of superconducting resonators induced by interacting two-level systems

In a number of recent experiments with microwave high quality superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators an anomalously weak power dependence of the quality factor has been observed. We argue that this observation implies that the monochromatic radiation does not saturate the two level systems (TLS) located at the interface oxide surfaces of the resonator and suggests the importance of their interactions. We estimate the microwave loss due to interacting TLS and show that the interactions between TLS lead to a drift of their energies that result in a much slower, logarithmic dependence of their absorption on the radiation power in agreement with the data.

High-coherence hybrid superconducting qubit

We report quantum coherence measurements of a superconducting qubit whose design is a hybrid of several existing types. Excellent coherence times are found: T2∼T1∼1.5 μs. The topology of the qubit is that of a traditional three-junction flux qubit, but it has a large shunting capacitance, and the ratio of the junction critical currents is chosen so that the qubit potential has a single-well form. The qubit has a sizable nonlinearity, but its sign is reversed compared with most other popular qubit designs. The qubit is read out dispersively using a high-Q resonator in a λ/2 configuration.
