Controlling the wetting properties of the Asakura-Oosawa model and applications to spherical confinement

Phase behavior of colloid-polymer mixtures in planar, spherical, and cylindrical confinement: A density functional theory study

The Asakura-Oosawa (AO) model of colloid-polymer mixtures has been extensively studied over the past several decades both via computer simulations and Density Functional Theory (DFT). At this point, its structural and thermodynamic properties both in the bulk and in contact with flat structureless walls are well understood. At the same time, the phase behavior of AO mixtures in spherical cavities and cylindrical pores, while thoroughly investigated by simulations, has not received a comparably detailed DFT treatment. In this paper, we use the DFT results for the AO model in the bulk and under planar confinement as a point of reference for studying its thermodynamic and structural properties in cavities and pores. The accuracy of the DFT approach is assessed by comparing its predictions with the available extensive simulation data; good overall agreement is generally found with some notable exceptions in the vicinity of wetting and drying transitions. The deviations of the phase behavior in confinement from the bulk phase diagram are analyzed using the Kelvin equation, which is seen to work reasonably well under moderate confinement, i.e., for sufficiently large radii of confining cavities and pores.

Do the contact angle and line tension of surface-attached droplets depend on the radius of curvature?

Results from Monte Carlo simulations of wall-attached droplets in the three-dimensional Ising lattice gas model and in a symmetric binary Lennard-Jones fluid, confined by antisymmetric walls, are analyzed, with the aim to estimate the dependence of the contact angle [Formula: see text] on the droplet radius [Formula: see text] of curvature. Sphere-cap shape of the wall-attached droplets is assumed throughout. An approach, based purely on 'thermodynamic' observables, e.g. chemical potential, excess density due to the droplet, etc, is used, to avoid ambiguities in the decision which particles belong (or do not belong, respectively) to the droplet. It is found that the results are compatible with a variation [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] being the contact angle in the thermodynamic limit ([Formula: see text]). The possibility to use such results to estimate the excess free energy related to the contact line of the droplet, namely the line tension, at the wall, is discussed. Various problems that hamper this approach and were not fully recognized in previous attempts to extract the line tension are identified. It is also found that the dependence of wall tensions on the difference of chemical potential of the droplet from that at the bulk coexistence provides effectively a change of the contact angle of similar magnitude. The simulation approach yields precise estimates for the excess density due to wall-attached droplets and the corresponding free energy excess, relative to a system without a droplet at the same chemical potential. It is shown that this information suffices to estimate nucleation barriers, not affected by ambiguities on droplet shape, contact angle and line tension.

Fluids confined in wedges and by edges: From cluster integrals to thermodynamic properties referred to different regions

Recently, new insights into the relation between the geometry of the vessel that confines a fluid and its thermodynamic properties were traced through the study of cluster integrals for inhomogeneous fluids. In this work, I analyze the thermodynamic properties of fluids confined in wedges or by edges, emphasizing on the question of the region to which these properties refer. In this context, the relations between the line-thermodynamic properties referred to different regions are derived as analytic functions of the dihedral angle α, for 0 < α < 2π, which enables a unified approach to both edges and wedges. As a simple application of these results, I analyze the properties of the confined gas in the low-density regime. Finally, using recent analytic results for the second cluster integral of the confined hard sphere fluid, the low density behavior of the line thermodynamic properties is analytically studied up to order two in the density for 0 < α < 2π and by adopting different reference regions.

Structure, thermodynamic properties, and phase diagrams of few colloids confined in a spherical pore

We study a system of few colloids confined in a small spherical cavity with event driven molecular dynamics simulations in the canonical ensemble. The colloidal particles interact through a short range square-well potential that takes into account the basic elements of attraction and excluded-volume repulsion of the interaction among colloids. We analyze the structural and thermodynamic properties of this few-body confined system in the framework of inhomogeneous fluids theory. Pair correlation function and density profile are used to determine the structure and the spatial characteristics of the system. Pressure on the walls, internal energy, and surface quantities such as surface tension and adsorption are also analyzed for a wide range of densities and temperatures. We have characterized systems from 2 to 6 confined particles, identifying distinctive qualitative behavior over the thermodynamic plane T - ρ, in a few-particle equivalent to phase diagrams of macroscopic systems. Applying the extended law of corresponding states, the square well interaction is mapped to the Asakura-Oosawa model for colloid-polymer mixtures. We link explicitly the temperature of the confined square-well fluid to the equivalent packing fraction of polymers in the Asakura-Oosawa model. Using this approach, we study the confined system of few colloids in a colloid-polymer mixture.

Mean properties and free energy of a few hard spheres confined in a spherical cavity

We use analytical calculations and event-driven molecular dynamics simulations to study a small number of hard sphere particles in a spherical cavity. The cavity is also taken as the thermal bath so that the system thermalizes by collisions with the wall. In that way, these systems of two, three, and four particles, are considered in the canonical ensemble. We characterize various mean and thermal properties for a wide range of number densities. We study the density profiles, the components of the local pressure tensor, the interface tension, and the adsorption at the wall. This spans from the ideal gas limit at low densities to the high-packing limit in which there are significant regions of the cavity for which the particles have no access, due the conjunction of excluded volume and confinement. The contact density and the pressure on the wall are obtained by simulations and compared to exact analytical results. We also obtain the excess free energy for N = 4, by using a simulated-assisted approach in which we combine simulation results with the knowledge of the exact partition function for two and three particles in a spherical cavity.

Logarithmic finite-size effects on interfacial free energies: phenomenological theory and Monte Carlo studies

The computation of interfacial free energies between coexisting phases (e.g., saturated vapor and liquid) by computer simulation methods is still a challenging problem due to the difficulty of an atomistic identification of an interface and interfacial fluctuations on all length scales. The approach to estimate the interfacial tension from the free-energy excess of a system with interfaces relative to corresponding single-phase systems does not suffer from the first problem but still suffers from the latter. Considering d-dimensional systems with interfacial area L(d-1) and linear dimension L(z) in the direction perpendicular to the interface, it is argued that the interfacial fluctuations cause logarithmic finite-size effects of order ln(L)/L(d-1) and order ln(L(z))/L(d-1), in addition to regular corrections (with leading-order const/L(d-1)). A phenomenological theory predicts that the prefactors of the logarithmic terms are universal (but depend on the applied boundary conditions and the considered statistical ensemble). The physical origin of these corrections are the translational entropy of the interface as a whole, "domain breathing" (coupling of interfacial fluctuations to the bulk order parameter fluctuations of the coexisting domains), and capillary waves. Using a new variant of the ensemble switch method, interfacial tensions are found from Monte Carlo simulations of d = 2 and d = 3 Ising models and a Lennard-Jones fluid. The simulation results are fully consistent with the theoretical predictions.

Determination of the origin and magnitude of logarithmic finite-size effects on interfacial tension: role of interfacial fluctuations and domain breathing

The ensemble-switch method for computing wall excess free energies of condensed matter is extended to estimate the interface free energies between coexisting phases very accurately. By this method, system geometries with linear dimensions L parallel and Lz perpendicular to the interface with various boundary conditions in the canonical or grand canonical ensemble can be studied. Using two- and three-dimensional Ising models, the nature of the occurring logarithmic finite-size corrections is studied. It is found crucial to include interfacial fluctuations due to "domain breathing."

Hydrodynamic mechanisms of spinodal decomposition in confined colloid-polymer mixtures: a multiparticle collision dynamics study

A multiscale model for a colloid-polymer mixture is developed. The colloids are described as point particles interacting with each other and with the polymers with strongly repulsive potentials, while polymers interact with each other with a softer potential. The fluid in the suspension is taken into account by the multiparticle collision dynamics method (MPC). Considering a slit geometry where the suspension is confined between parallel repulsive walls, different possibilities for the hydrodynamic boundary conditions (b.c.) at the walls (slip versus stick) are treated. Quenching experiments are considered, where the system volume is suddenly reduced (keeping the density of the solvent fluid constant, while the colloid and polymer particle numbers are kept constant) and thus an initially homogeneous system is quenched deeply into the miscibility gap, where it is unstable. For various relative concentrations of colloids and polymers, the time evolution of the growing colloid-rich and polymer-rich domains are studied by molecular dynamics simulation, taking hydrodynamic effects mediated by the solvent into account via MPC. It is found that the domain size [script-l](d)(t) grows with time t as [script-l](d)(t) [proportionality] t(1/3) for stick and (at late stages) as [script-l](d)(t) [proportionality] t(2/3) for slip b.c., while break-up of percolating structures can cause a transient "arrest" of growth. While these findings apply for films that are 5-10 colloid diameters wide, for ultrathin films (1.5 colloid diameters wide) a regime with [script-l](d)(t) [proportionality] t(1/2) is also identified for rather shallow quenches.
