Application of a time-convolutionless stochastic Schrödinger equation to energy transport and thermal relaxation

Spin relaxation in radical pairs from the stochastic Schrödinger equation

We show that the stochastic Schrödinger equation (SSE) provides an ideal way to simulate the quantum mechanical spin dynamics of radical pairs. Electron spin relaxation effects arising from fluctuations in the spin Hamiltonian are straightforward to include in this approach, and their treatment can be combined with a highly efficient stochastic evaluation of the trace over nuclear spin states that is required to compute experimental observables. These features are illustrated in example applications to a flavin-tryptophan radical pair of interest in avian magnetoreception and to a problem involving spin-selective radical pair recombination along a molecular wire. In the first of these examples, the SSE is shown to be both more efficient and more widely applicable than a recent stochastic implementation of the Lindblad equation, which only provides a valid treatment of relaxation in the extreme-narrowing limit. In the second, the exact SSE results are used to assess the accuracy of a recently proposed combination of Nakajima-Zwanzig theory for the spin relaxation and Schulten-Wolynes theory for the spin dynamics, which is applicable to radical pairs with many more nuclear spins. We also analyze the efficiency of trace sampling in some detail, highlighting the particular advantages of sampling with SU(N) coherent states.

Effective 1D Time-Dependent Schrödinger Equations for 3D Geometrically Correlated Systems

The so-called Born–Huang ansatz is a fundamental tool in the context of ab-initio molecular dynamics, viz., it allows effectively separating fast and slow degrees of freedom and thus treating electrons and nuclei with different mathematical footings. Here, we consider the use of a Born–Huang-like expansion of the three-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation to separate transport and confinement degrees of freedom in electron transport problems that involve geometrical constrictions. The resulting scheme consists of an eigenstate problem for the confinement degrees of freedom (in the transverse direction) whose solution constitutes the input for the propagation of a set of coupled one-dimensional equations of motion for the transport degree of freedom (in the longitudinal direction). This technique achieves quantitative accuracy using an order less computational resources than the full dimensional simulation for a typical two-dimensional geometrical constriction and upto three orders for three-dimensional constriction.

Beyond the State of the Art: Novel Approaches for Thermal and Electrical Transport in Nanoscale Devices

Almost any interaction between two physical entities can be described through the transfer of either charge, spin, momentum, or energy. Therefore, any theory able to describe these transport phenomena can shed light on a variety of physical, chemical, and biological effects, enriching our understanding of complex, yet fundamental, natural processes, e.g., catalysis or photosynthesis. In this review, we will discuss the standard workhorses for transport in nanoscale devices, namely Boltzmann's equation and Landauer's approach. We will emphasize their strengths, but also analyze their limits, proposing theories and models useful to go beyond the state of the art in the investigation of transport in nanoscale devices.

Charge and energy transfer in large molecular assemblies: Quantum state diffusion with an adaptive basis

We show that the stochastic, wave-function based quantum state diffusion approach in combination with an adaptive basis is well suited to numerically treat the motion of an excitation in large molecular aggregates in the complicated regime where the transfer-time between molecules is comparable to the decoherence caused by environmental degrees of freedom.

Time-Dependent Thermal Transport Theory

Understanding thermal transport in nanoscale systems presents important challenges to both theory and experiment. In particular, the concept of local temperature at the nanoscale appears difficult to justify. Here, we propose a theoretical approach where we replace the temperature gradient with controllable external blackbody radiations. The theory recovers known physical results, for example, the linear relation between the thermal current and the temperature difference of two blackbodies. Furthermore, our theory is not limited to the linear regime and goes beyond accounting for nonlinear effects and transient phenomena. Since the present theory is general and can be adapted to describe both electron and phonon dynamics, it provides a first step toward a unified formalism for investigating thermal and electronic transport.
