Differences between the insulating limit quasiparticles of one-band and three-band cuprate models

On the Kinetic Energy Driven Superconductivity in the Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model

We investigate the role of kinetic energy for the stability of superconducting state in the two-dimensional Hubbard model on the basis of an optimization variational Monte Carlo method. The wave function is optimized by multiplying by correlation operators of site off-diagonal type. This wave function is written in an exponential-type form given as ψλ=exp(−λK)ψG for the Gutzwiller wave function ψG and a kinetic operator K. The kinetic correlation operator exp(−λK) plays an important role in the emergence of superconductivity in large-U region of the two-dimensional Hubbard model, where U is the on-site Coulomb repulsive interaction. We show that the superconducting condensation energy mainly originates from the kinetic energy in the strongly correlated region. This may indicate a possibility of high-temperature superconductivity due to the kinetic energy effect in correlated electron systems.

Critical Nature of the Ni Spin State in Doped NdNiO_{2}

Superconductivity with T_{c}≈15  K was recently found in doped NdNiO_{2}. The Ni^{1+}O_{2} layers are expected to be Mott insulators, so hole doping should produce Ni^{2+} with S=1, incompatible with robust superconductivity. We show that the NiO_{2} layers fall inside a critical region where the large pd hybridization favors a singlet ^{1}A_{1} hole-doped state like in CuO_{2}. However, we find that the superexchange is about one order smaller than in cuprates, thus a magnon "glue" is very unlikely and another mechanism needs to be found.

Mechanism of High-Temperature Superconductivity in Correlated-Electron Systems

It is very important to elucidate the mechanism of superconductivity for achieving room temperature superconductivity. In the first half of this paper, we give a brief review on mechanisms of superconductivity in many-electron systems. We believe that high-temperature superconductivity may occur in a system with interaction of large-energy scale. Empirically, this is true for superconductors that have been found so far. In the second half of this paper, we discuss cuprate high-temperature superconductors. We argue that superconductivity of high temperature cuprates is induced by the strong on-site Coulomb interaction, that is, the origin of high-temperature superconductivity is the strong electron correlation. We show the results on the ground state of electronic models for high temperature cuprates on the basis of the optimization variational Monte Carlo method. A high-temperature superconducting phase will exist in the strongly correlated region.

Generalized One-Band Model Based on Zhang-Rice Singlets for Tetragonal CuO

Tetragonal CuO (T-CuO) has attracted attention because of its structure similar to that of the cuprates. It has been recently proposed as a compound whose study can give an end to the long debate about the proper microscopic modeling for cuprates. In this work, we rigorously derive an effective one-band generalized t-J model for T-CuO, based on orthogonalized Zhang-Rice singlets, and make an estimative calculation of its parameters, based on previous ab initio calculations. By means of the self-consistent Born approximation, we then evaluate the spectral function and the quasiparticle dispersion for a single hole doped in antiferromagnetically ordered half filled T-CuO. Our predictions show very good agreement with angle-resolved photoemission spectra and with theoretical multiband results. We conclude that a generalized t-J model remains the minimal Hamiltonian for a correct description of single-hole dynamics in cuprates.

Non-Zhang-Rice Singlet Character of the First Ionization State of T-CuO

We argue that tetragonal CuO (T-CuO) has the potential to finally settle long-standing modeling issues for cuprate physics. We compare the one-hole quasiparticle (qp) dispersion of T-CuO to that of cuprates, in the framework of the strongly correlated (U_{dd}→∞) limit of the three-band Emery model. Unlike in CuO_{2}, magnetic frustration in T-CuO breaks the C_{4} rotational symmetry and leads to strong deviations from the Zhang-Rice singlet picture in parts of the reciprocal space. Our results are consistent with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data but in sharp contradiction to those of a one-band model previously suggested for them. These differences identify T-CuO as an ideal material to test a variety of scenarios proposed for explaining cuprate phenomenology.
