A density functional theory for colloids with two multiple bonding associating sites

Role of site-site interaction on the phase equilibria of multiple-site associating fluids in a functionalized slit pore

Vapor-liquid phase equilibria for multiple sites associating fluids with different associating strengths are investigated in a slit pore using grand-canonical transition matrix Monte Carlo method. The increase of critical temperature from two-site to four-site associating fluids at constant site strength is quite significant as compared to that of the one-site to two-site associating fluids, which is more pronounced at higher associating strength (ϵ* = 6). Monomer fraction and cluster size distribution are used to investigate the association of fluid particles in coexistence phases. The monomer fraction for both phases decreases with increased associating sites on the fluid particles due to more site-site interaction with neighboring fluid particles and forming a larger cluster. Therefore, the number of associating sites and their distribution play a vital role in the association of fluid particles. Moreover, the saturation chemical potential changes with the arrangement of the sites. For two-site associating fluids, we observe early vapor-liquid transition when the sites are oppositely placed, and when the sites are placed at 90°, the vapor-liquid transition is observed at the higher chemical potential. Moreover, four-site associating fluids with a square arrangement show early vapor-liquid phase transition, mainly because these arrangements of sites effectively interact with surface sites and the molecules in the next layer.

Bubble Point Pressures of Hydrocarbon Mixtures in Multiscale Volumes from Density Functional Theory

Accurate characterization of the bubble point pressure of hydrocarbon mixtures under nanoconfinement is crucial to the prediction of ultimate oil recovery and well productivity of shale/tight oil reservoirs. Unlike conventional reservoirs, shale has an extensive network of tiny pores in the range of a few nanometers. In nanopores, the properties of hydrocarbon fluids deviate from those in bulk because of significant surface adsorption. Many previous theoretical works use a conventional equation of state model coupled with capillary pressure to study the nanoconfinement effect. Without including the inhomogeneous molecular density distributions in nanoconfinement, these previous approaches predict only slightly reduced bubble points. In this work, we use density functional theory to study the effect of nanoconfinement on the hydrocarbon mixture bubble point pressure by explicitly considering fluid-surface interactions and inhomogeneous density distributions in nanopores. We find that as system pressure decreases, while lighter components are continuously released from the nanopores, heavier components accumulate within. The bubble point pressure of nanoconfined hydrocarbon mixtures is thus significantly suppressed from the bulk bubble point to below the bulk dew point, in line with our previous experiments. When bulk fluids are in a two-phase, the confined hydrocarbon fluids are in a single liquid-like phase. As pore size increases, bubble point pressure of confined fluids increases and hydrocarbon average density in nanopores approaches the liquid-phase density in bulk when bulk is in a two-phase region. For a finite volume bulk bath, we find that because of the competitive adsorption in nanopores, the bulk bubble point pressure increases in line with a previous experimental work. Our work demonstrates how mixture dynamics and nanopore-bulk partitioning influence phase behavior in nanoconfinement and enables the accurate estimation of hydrocarbon mixture bubble point pressure in shale nanopores.

Modeling micelle formation and interfacial properties with iSAFT classical density functional theory

Surfactants reduce the interfacial tension between phases, making them an important additive in a number of industrial and commercial applications from enhanced oil recovery to personal care products (e.g., shampoo and detergents). To help obtain a better understanding of the dependence of surfactantproperties on molecular structure, a classical density functional theory, also known as interfacial statistical associating fluid theory, has been applied to study the effects of surfactant architecture on micelle formation and interfacial properties for model nonionic surfactant/water/oil systems. In this approach, hydrogen bonding is explicitly included. To minimize the free energy, the system minimizes interactions between hydrophobic components and hydrophilic components with water molecules hydrating the surfactant head group. The theory predicts micellar structure, effects of surfactant architecture on critical micelle concentration, aggregation number, and interfacial tension isotherm of surfactant/water systems in qualitative agreement with experimental data. Furthermore, this model is applied to study swollen micelles and reverse swollen micelles that are necessary to understand the formation of a middle-phase microemulsion.

Adsorption and Phase Behavior of Pure/Mixed Alkanes in Nanoslit Graphite Pores: An iSAFT Application

The prediction of fluid phase behavior in nanoscale pores is critical for shale gas/oil development. In this work, we use a molecular density functional theory (DFT) to study the effect of molecular size and shape on partitioning to graphite nanopores as a model of shale. Here, interfacial statistical associating fluid theory (iSAFT) is applied to model alkane (C₁ - C₈) adsorption/desorption/phase behavior in graphite slit pores for both pure fluids and mixtures. The pure component parameters were fit to the bulk saturated liquid density and vapor pressure data in selected temperature ranges. The potential of interaction between the fluid and graphite is modeled with a Steele 10-4-3 potential that is fit to the potential of mean force from single-molecule simulations. Good agreement is found between theory and molecular simulation for the density distributions of pure components in slit pores. The critical properties of methane, ethane, and their mixtures as well as the shift in bubble point and dew point densities were studied, showing good agreement with simulation. The competitive adsorption of mixtures of normal and branched alkanes in graphite pores was also studied. Heavier components more strongly adsorb up to the point that the entropic penalty due to confinement reduces adsorption.

Computational Insights into Materials and Interfaces for Capacitive Energy Storage

Supercapacitors such as electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and pseudocapacitors are becoming increasingly important in the field of electrical energy storage. Theoretical study of energy storage in EDLCs focuses on solving for the electric double-layer structure in different electrode geometries and electrolyte components, which can be achieved by molecular simulations such as classical molecular dynamics (MD), classical density functional theory (classical DFT), and Monte-Carlo (MC) methods. In recent years, combining first-principles and classical simulations to investigate the carbon-based EDLCs has shed light on the importance of quantum capacitance in graphene-like 2D systems. More recently, the development of joint density functional theory (JDFT) enables self-consistent electronic-structure calculation for an electrode being solvated by an electrolyte. In contrast with the large amount of theoretical and computational effort on EDLCs, theoretical understanding of pseudocapacitance is very limited. In this review, we first introduce popular modeling methods and then focus on several important aspects of EDLCs including nanoconfinement, quantum capacitance, dielectric screening, and novel 2D electrode design; we also briefly touch upon pseudocapactive mechanism in RuO2. We summarize and conclude with an outlook for the future of materials simulation and design for capacitive energy storage.

A density functional theory for association of fluid molecules with a functionalized surface: fluid-wall single and double bonding

In this manuscript we extend Wertheim's two-density formalism beyond its first order to model a system of fluid molecules with a single association site close to a planar hard wall with association sites on its surface in a density functional theory framework. The association sites of the fluid molecules are small enough that they can form only one bond, while the wall association sites are large enough to bond with more than one fluid molecule. The effects of temperature and of bulk fluid and wall site densities on the fluid density profile, extent of association, and competition between single and double bonding of fluid segments at the wall sites versus distance from the wall are presented. The theory predictions are compared with new Monte Carlo simulation results and they are in good agreement. The theory captures the surface coverage over wide ranges of temperature and bulk density by introducing the effect of steric hindrance in fluid association at a wall site.
