Controlled surface ordering of endohedral fullerenes with a SrTiO(3) template

Flow-induced-crystallization: tailoring host-guest supramolecular co-assemblies at the liquid-solid interface

Here, we report that using the method of simply contacting a sample solution droplet with a piece of tissue paper can create a solvent flow (capillary force). During this process, the dynamics and solvent removal can promote the formation and stabilization of a meta-stable linear quasi-crystal composed of p-terphenyl-3,5,3',5'-tetracarboxylic acid (TPTC) molecules, which would otherwise pack into thermodynamically favored random tiling. The tailored quasi-crystal (linear) template allows atop it higher-efficiency accommodation of fullerene molecules (C₆₀) from 40.1% to 97.5%, compared with that obtained in the random-tiling (porous) case. Overall, the result of this study presents an unusual yet remarkably simple strategy for tailoring complex host-guest supramolecular systems at the liquid-solid interface.

X3 synthon geometries in two-dimensional halogen-bonded 1,3,5-tris(3,5-dibromophenyl)benzene self-assembled nanoarchitectures on Au(111)-()

The self-assembly of star-shaped 1,3,5-tris(3,5-dibromophenyl)benzene molecules on Au(111)-() in a vacuum is investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy and core-level spectroscopy. Scanning tunneling microscopy shows that the molecules self-assemble into a hexagonal porous halogen-bonded nanoarchitecture. This structure is stabilized by X_3-A synthons composed of three type-II halogen-interactions (halogen-bonds). The molecules are oriented along the same direction in this arrangement. Domain boundaries are observed in the hcp region of the herringbone gold surface reconstruction. Molecules of the neighboring domains are rotated by 180°. The domain boundaries are stabilized by the formation of X_3-B synthons composed of two type-II and one type-I halogen-interactions between molecules of the neighboring domains. Core-level spectroscopy confirms the existence of two types of halogen-interactions in the organic layer. These observations show that the gold surface reconstructions can be exploited to modify the long-range supramolecular halogen-bonded self-assemblies.

When does atomic resolution plan view imaging of surfaces work?

Surface structures that are different from the corresponding bulk, reconstructions, are exceedingly difficult to characterize with most experimental methods. Scanning tunneling microscopy, the workhorse for imaging complex surface structures of metals and semiconductors, is not as effective for oxides and other insulating materials. This paper details the use of transmission electron microscopy plan view imaging in conjunction with image processing for solving complex surface structures. We address the issue of extracting the surface structure from a weak signal with a large bulk contribution. This method requires the sample to be thin enough for kinematical assumptions to be valid. The analysis was performed on two sets of data, c(6×2) on the (100) surface and (3×3) on the (111) surface of SrTiO₃, and was unsuccessful in the latter due to the thickness of the sample and a lack of inversion symmetry. The limits and the functionality of this method are discussed.

Atomic-scale visualization of initial growth of homoepitaxial SrTiO₃ thin film on an atomically ordered substrate

The initial homoepitaxial growth of SrTiO(3) on a (√13 × √13)-R33.7° SrTiO(3)(001) substrate surface, which can be prepared under oxide growth conditions, is atomically resolved by scanning tunneling microscopy. The identical (√13 × √13) atomic structure is clearly visualized on the deposited SrTiO(3) film surface as well as on the substrate. This result indicates the transfer of the topmost Ti-rich (√13 × √13) structure to the film surface and atomic-scale coherent epitaxy at the film/substrate interface. Such atomically ordered SrTiO(3) substrates can be applied to the fabrication of atom-by-atom controlled oxide epitaxial films and heterostructures.

Locking the free-rotation of a prochiral star-shaped guest molecule inside a two-dimensional nanoporous network by introduction of chlorine atoms

Two star-shaped triazatrinaphthylene (TrisK) derivatives form highly-organized nanoporous honeycomb networks when adsorbed at the n-tetradecane/HOPG interface. STM reveals that replacing three H-atoms by three Cl-atoms in the chemical structure of the TrisK skeleton results in locking the free-rotation of the guest molecules inside the pore of the host network as a result of symmetry breaking.

Tailoring two-dimensional PTCDA-melamine self-assembled architectures at room temperature by tuning molecular ratio

Engineering and tuning multi-component supramolecular self-assemblies on surfaces is one of the challenges of nanotechnology. We use scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate the influence of molecular ratio on the self-assembly of PTCDA-melamine structures on Au(111)-(22 x complex square root of 3). Our observations reveal that three different chiral supramolecular networks having a PTCDA:melamine ratio of 3:2, 1:2, 1:4 can be selectively created by tuning the ratio of molecules deposited on the surface. The 1:2 ratio network having melamine in excess has been observed previously but the 1:4 network has not yet been reported. In comparison, the multi-component 3:2 network having PTCDA in excess is a completely new structure.

NaCl multi-layer islands grown on Au(111)-([Formula: see text]) probed by scanning tunneling microscopy

The growth of multi-layer NaCl islands on Au(111)-([Formula: see text]) surfaces was investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We observed that the aspect of the NaCl islands drastically differs depending on the tunneling conditions. It is therefore possible to observe the layers forming an NaCl island or to image the gold reconstruction below the first NaCl layer. Atomically resolved STM images obtained on the first NaCl layer demonstrate that NaCl grows as an epitaxial crystalline film on Au(111)-([Formula: see text]). STM images also suggest that some NaCl layers can be non-crystalline.

C70 ordering on nanostructured SrTiO3(001)

The nanostructured (7 x 4) surface of SrTiO(3)(001) is used as a template to order C(70) into single-molecule-wide chains and linear islands.
