Ground-State Spin Blockade in a Single-Molecule Junction

It is known that the quantum mechanical ground state of a nanoscale junction has a significant impact on its electrical transport properties. This becomes particularly important in transistors consisting of a single molecule. Because of strong electron-electron interactions and the possibility of accessing ground states with high spins, these systems are eligible hosts of a current-blockade phenomenon called a ground-state spin blockade. This effect arises from the inability of a charge carrier to account for the spin difference required to enter the junction, as that process would violate the spin selection rules. Here, we present a direct experimental demonstration of a ground-state spin blockade in a high-spin single-molecule transistor. The measured transport characteristics of this device exhibit a complete suppression of resonant transport due to a ground-state spin difference of 3/2 between subsequent charge states. Strikingly, the blockade can be reversibly lifted by driving the system through a magnetic ground-state transition in one charge state, using the tunability offered by both magnetic and electric fields.

Effects of spin-orbit coupling and many-body correlations in STM transport through copper phthalocyanine

The interplay of exchange correlations and spin-orbit interaction (SOI) on the many-body spectrum of a copper phtalocyanine (CuPc) molecule and their signatures in transport are investigated. We first derive a minimal model Hamiltonian in a basis of frontier orbitals that is able to reproduce experimentally observed singlet-triplet splittings. In a second step SOI effects are included perturbatively. Major consequences of the SOI are the splitting of former degenerate levels and a magnetic anisotropy, which can be captured by an effective low-energy spin Hamiltonian. We show that scanning tunneling microscopy-based magnetoconductance measurements can yield clear signatures of both these SOI-induced effects.

Single-electron transport in a three-ion magnetic molecule modulated by a transverse field

We study single-electron transport in a three-ion molecule with strong uniaxial anisotropy and in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. Two magnetic ions are connected to each other through a third, nonmagnetic ion. The magnetic ions are coupled to ideal metallic leads and a back gate voltage is applied to the molecule, forming a field-effect transistor. The microscopic Hamiltonian describing this system includes inter-ion hopping, on-site repulsions and magnetic anisotropies. For a range of values of the parameters of the Hamiltonian, we obtain an energy spectrum similar to that of single-molecule magnets in the giant spin approximation where the two states with maximum spin projection along the uniaxial anisotropy axis are well separated from other states. In addition, upon applying an external in-plane magnetic field, the energy gap between the ground and first excited states of the molecule oscillates, going to zero at certain special values of the field, analogous to the diabolical points resulting from Berry phase interference in the giant spin model. Thus, our microscopic model provides the same phenomenological behavior expected from the giant spin model of a single-molecule magnet but with direct access to the internal structure of the molecule, thus making it more appropriate for realistic electronic transport studies. To illustrate this point, the nonlinear electronic transport in the sequential tunneling regime is evaluated for values of the field near these degeneracy points. We show that the existence of these points has a clear signature in the I-V characteristics of the molecule, most notably the modulation of excitation lines in the differential conductance.

Gate-tunable split Kondo effect in a carbon nanotube quantum dot

We show a detailed investigation of the split Kondo effect in a carbon nanotube quantum dot with multiple gate electrodes. Two conductance peaks, observed at finite bias in nonlinear transport measurements, are found to approach each other for increasing magnetic field, to result in a recovered zero bias Kondo resonance at finite magnetic field. Surprisingly, in the same charge state, but under different gate configurations, the splitting does not disappear for any value of the magnetic field, but we observe an avoided crossing. We think that our observations can be understood in terms of a two-impurity Kondo effect with two spins coupled antiferromagnetically. The exchange coupling between the two spins can be influenced by a local gate, and the non-recovery of the Kondo resonance for certain gate configurations is explained by the existence of a small antisymmetric contribution to the exchange interaction between the two spins.
