Ultralow Pt-loading bimetallic nanoflowers: fabrication and sensing applications

Adsorbed Carbon Monoxide-Enabled Self-Terminated Au-Grafting on Pt6 Nanoclusters for Enhanced Methanol Electrooxidation

The study presents the first example of an adsorbed carbon monoxide (CO) enabled self-terminated Au-grafting on triphenylphosphine (PPh3) stabilized Pt6 nanoclusters (NCs) (Pt6 (PPh3)4Cl5 NCs or Pt6 NCs). Adsorbed PPh3 ligands weaken the Pt-CO bond enabling the self-terminated Au-grafting on Pt6 NCs. The Au-grafted Pt6 NCs exhibit enhanced methanol electrooxidation (MOR) in acidic solutions. The surface is composed of a PtAu ensemble exhibiting enhanced MOR and CO tolerance due to the synergistic interaction of Pt with Au and PPh3. The hydrogen underpotential deposition (H-UPD) signal from a CO-covered surface reveals the existence of free-Pt sites on the PtAu ensemble causing higher MOR reactivity. The Au and PPh3 ensure electrocatalytic activity of the NCs, depriving of them at anodic potentials results in "a death-valley" trend.

Synthesis of Gold-Platinum Core-Shell Nanoparticles Assembled on a Silica Template and Their Peroxidase Nanozyme Properties

Bimetallic nanoparticles are important materials for synthesizing multifunctional nanozymes. A technique for preparing gold-platinum nanoparticles (NPs) on a silica core template (SiO₂@Au@Pt) using seed-mediated growth is reported in this study. The SiO₂@Au@Pt exhibits peroxidase-like nanozyme activity has several advantages over gold assembled silica core templates (SiO₂@Au@Au), such as stability and catalytic performance. The maximum reaction velocity (V_max) and the Michaelis–Menten constants (K_m) were and 2.1 × 10⁻¹⁰ M⁻¹∙s⁻¹ and 417 µM, respectively. Factors affecting the peroxidase activity, including the quantity of NPs, solution pH, reaction time, and concentration of tetramethyl benzidine, are also investigated in this study. The optimization of SiO₂@Au@Pt NPs for H₂O₂ detection obtained in 0.5 mM TMB; using 5 µg SiO₂@Au@Pt, at pH 4.0 for 15 min incubation. H₂O₂ can be detected in the dynamic liner range of 1.0 to 100 mM with the detection limit of 1.0 mM. This study presents a novel method for controlling the properties of bimetallic NPs assembled on a silica template and increases the understanding of the activity and potential applications of highly efficient multifunctional NP-based nanozymes.

Novel electrochemical sensing platform for ultrasensitive detection of cardiac troponin I based on aptamer-MoS2 nanoconjugates

Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is a specific and sensitive biomarker for the early diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction and for the subsequent clinical treatments. In this work, novel electrochemical sensing platform for sensing of cTnI based on aptamer-MoS₂ nanoconjugates was proposed. For comparison, core-shell Au@SiO₂@Au nanoparticles were also used for sensing of cTnI. The sensing schemes and electrochemical responses of the proposed sensors were investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in 5.0 mM K₃[Fe(CN)₆]/K₄[Fe(CN)₆] (1:1) solution containing 0.1 M KCl, respectively. Results showed that the aptamer-Au@SiO₂@Au based aptasensor shows a linear rage of 10 pM-10.0 μM with the detection limits of 1.23 pM For the aptamer-MoS₂ nanosheets based aptasensor, the linear range for cTnI detection was from 10 pM to 1.0 μM with a lower detection limit of 0.95 pM Meanwhile, both the sensors were successfully applied for detection of cTnI in human blood samples. The two kinds of aptsensors have been successfully used for detecting of cTnI in human blood serums. Moreover, no negligible signal changes could be observed in the presence of non-targets of CK-MB and Myo, suggesting the good potential for clinic diagnosis.

Pt-grown carbon nanofibers for detection of hydrogen peroxide

Removal of left-over catalyst particles from carbon nanomaterials is a significant scientific and technological problem. Here, we present the physical and electrochemical study of application-specific carbon nanofibers grown from Pt-catalyst layers. The use of Pt catalyst removes the requirement for any cleaning procedure as the remaining catalyst particles have a specific role in the end-application. Despite the relatively small amount of Pt in the samples (7.0 ± 0.2%), they show electrochemical features closely resembling those of polycrystalline Pt. In O₂-containing environment, the material shows two separate linear ranges for hydrogen peroxide reduction: 1–100 μM and 100–1000 μM with sensitivities of 0.432 μA μM⁻¹ cm⁻² and 0.257 μA μM⁻¹ cm⁻², respectively, with a 0.21 μM limit of detection. In deaerated solution, there is only one linear range with sensitivity 0.244 μA μM⁻¹ cm⁻² and 0.22 μM limit of detection. We suggest that the high sensitivity between 1 μM and 100 μM in solutions where O₂ is present is due to oxygen reduction reaction occurring on the CNFs producing a small additional cathodic contribution to the measured current. This has important implications when Pt-containing sensors are utilized to detect hydrogen peroxide reduction in biological, O₂-containing environment.

Application specific Pt-grown carbon nanofibers for H₂O₂ detection were characterized and the roles of dissolved oxygen and chloride ions on the electrochemical performance were assessed in detail.

AuPt Alloy Nanostructures with Tunable Composition and Enzyme-like Activities for Colorimetric Detection of Bisulfide

Tuning the enzyme-like activity and studying the interaction between biologically relevant species and nano-enzymes may facilitate the applications of nanostructures in mimicking natural enzymes. In this work, AuPt alloy nanoparticles (NPs) with varying compositions were prepared through a facile method by co-reduction of Au3+ and Pt2+ in aqueous solutions. The composition could be tuned easily by adjusting the molar ratios of added Pt2+ to Au3+. It was found that both peroxidase-like and oxidase-like activity of AuPt alloy NPs were highly dependent on the alloy compositions, which thus suggesting an effective way to tailor their catalytic properties. By investigating the inhibitory effects of HS- on the enzyme-like activity of AuPt alloy NPs and natural enzyme, we have developed a method for colorimetric detection of HS- and evaluation of the inhibiting effects of inhibitors on natural and artificial enzymes. In addition, the responsive ability of this method was influenced largely by the composition: AuPt alloy NPs show much lower limit of detection for HS- than Pt NPs while Pt NPs show wider linear range than AuPt alloy NPs. This study suggests the facile way not only for synthesis of alloy nanostructures, but also for tuning their catalytic activities and for use in bioanalysis.

Fabrication of single Pt@Au nanowire electrodes for monitoring hydrogen peroxide released from living cells

Single Pt@AuNWEs were fabricated by a Cu UPD/Pt redox replacement technique, and were applied to monitoring H₂O₂ released from living cells.

Nanomaterials and biomaterials in electrochemical arrays for protein detection

Nanomaterials and biomaterials are important components of new electrochemical arrays designed for sensitive detection of proteins in biological fluids. Such multiplexed protein arrays are predicted to have an important future in personalized medical diagnostics, especially for cancer and heart disease. Sandwich immunoassays for proteins benefit greatly in sensitivity from the use of nanostructured sensor surfaces and multilabeled detection strategies involving nano- or microparticles. In these assays, capture agents such as antibodies or aptamers are attached to sensor surfaces in the array. Target proteins with large binding constants for the affinity agents are captured from liquid samples with high efficiency, either on the sensors or on magnetic bioconjugate particles decorated with many copies of labels and antibodies. After target proteins are captured on the sensor surfaces, the labels are detected by electrochemical techniques. This feature article begins with an overview of the recent history of nanoparticles in electrochemical protein sensors, then moves on to specific examples from our own laboratories. We discuss fabrication of nanostructured sensors and arrays with the aim of multiplexed detection as well as reusability. Following this, we describe systems that integrate particle-based protein sensing with microfluidics for multiplexed protein detection. We end with predictions on the diagnostic future of protein detection.
