Monochromatic filter with multiple manipulation approaches by the layered all-dielectric patch array

Nano-slit assisted high-Q photonic resonant perfect absorbers

We propose and demonstrate a new kind of resonant absorber via introducing the nano-slit into a photonic film. The combination of the nano-slit cavity and the photonic waveguide provides a powerful way to manipulate the light behaviors including the spectral Q factors and the absorption efficiency. Ultra-sharp resonant absorption with the Q factors up to 579.5 is achieved, suggesting an enhancement of ∼6100% in contrast to that of the metal-dielectric flat film structure. Moreover, in comparison with the low absorption of 5.4% for the system without nano-slit, the spectral absorption is up to ∼96.6% for the nano-slit assisted photonic absorber. The high Q resonant absorption can be further manipulated via the structural parameters and the polarization state. The operation wavelengths can be tuned by the lattice constant. As the nano-slit introduced into the dielectric film, strong optical field confinement effects can be achieved by the cavity resonance via the nano-slit itself, and the guided resonant effect in the photonic waveguide cavity formed by the adjacent nano-slits. Otherwise, the photonic-plasmonic hybridization effect is simultaneously excited between the dielectric guided cavity layer and the metal substrate. These findings can be extended to other photonic nano-cavity systems and pave new insights into the high Q nano-optics devices.

Multipole Resonance in Arrays of Diamond Dielectric: A Metamaterial Perfect Absorber in the Visible Regime

Excellent characteristics and promising application prospects promote the rapid development of metamaterials. We have numerically proposed and demonstrated a novel subwavelength broadband metamaterial perfect absorber (BMPA) based on diamond dielectric arrays. The proposed absorber is composed of an ultra-thin two-layer structure covering the dielectric periodic array on a metal substrate. The materials of dielectric silicon (Si) and gold (Au) substrate are discussed in detail. In addition, different dielectric and refractory materials are also applied to achieve broadband absorption, which will make the proposed absorber greatly broaden the application field. A perfect absorption window (i.e., absorption rate exceeding 90%) can be obtained from near-ultraviolet to the visible range. The average absorption rate of 93.3% is achieved in the visible range. The results of multipole decomposition show that broadband absorption is mainly caused by electromagnetic dipole resonance and lattice resonance in a periodic array of Si. The proposed absorber can be extended freely by adjusting the structural parameters. The polarization-independent and incident angle insensitivity are proved. The proposed absorber may well be used in light energy acquisition, as well as for the scalability of optoelectronic and sensing devices.

Control of resonance mode using a fine-structured grating: toward a high resolving power filter

A band-stop filter with high resolving power is designed for mid-infrared spectroscopic sensing and imaging applications. By utilizing a truncated grating consisting of multiple gold nanowires in each unit cell of the periodic structure, compression of the stop bandwidth and improvement of the resonance extinction are realized simultaneously. It shows only a single stop band at ∼4.474  μm with 15 dB extinction and >80% background transmission over a wide spectral range. The obtained narrow linewidth (∼1.45  nm) enables a spectral resolving power higher than 3000. Flexible control of the filtering performance is investigated by adjusting the variety of geometrical parameters. Moreover, the structure may have potential applications in refractive index sensing.

Quadrupole mode plasmon resonance enabled subwavelength metal-dielectric grating optical reflection filters

A metal-dielectric subwavelength grating structure was investigated for making single-peak narrow linewidth optical reflection filters in the near-infrared region. The subwavelength grating filter structure consists of a one-dimensional periodic array of metal (gold) and dielectric (Al₂O₃) elements on a dielectric substrate. Optimized reflection filters have a single reflection peak with ~10 nm linewidth in the infrared region over a wide spectral band. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations and multipole analysis show that the narrow linewidth reflection is due to the coupling of the Rayleigh anomaly wave to the quadrupole plasmon resonance mode of the subwavelength metal-dielectric grating. Additionally, it was found that the contrast of the indices of refraction of two dielectric materials in the subwavelength structure is critical for realizing optical filter effect.

Partially hollowed ultra-thin dielectric meta-surface for transmission manipulation

Impressive optical properties are numerically demonstrated in the partially hollowed dielectric meta-surface (p-HDMS), which consists of an air cavity array intercalated in an ultra-thin (~λ/6) high-index dielectric film. Multispectral transmission band-stop response with near-perfect spectral modulation depth is achieved. The spectral slop is up to 80%/nm, indicating the sharp and narrowband transmission behavior. Classical Malus law is confirmed by this sub-wavelength platform. Moreover, the multispectral light propagation manipulation can be perfectly reproduced by using the actual dielectric with absorption loss. In this all-dielectric meta-surface, conduction loss is avoided compared to its metallic plasmonic counterpart. Such configurations can therefore serve as excellent alternatives for plasmonic meta-surfaces and constitute an important step in nanophotonics.
