Tuning the plasmonic properties of silver nanopatterns fabricated by shadow nanosphere lithography

SERS-Active Pattern in Silver-Ion-Exchanged Glass Drawn by Infrared Nanosecond Laser

The irradiation of silver-to-sodium ion-exchanged glass with 1.06-μm nanosecond laser pulses of mJ-range energy results in the formation of silver nanoparticles under the glass surface. Following chemical removal of ~25-nm glass layer reveals a pattern of nanoparticles capable of surface enhancement of Raman scattering (SERS). The pattern formed when laser pulses are more than half-overlapped provides up to ~105 enhancement and uniform SERS signal distribution, while the decrease of the pulse overlap results in an order of magnitude higher but less uniform enhancement.

Transition from discrete patches to plasmonic nanohole array by glancing angle deposition on nanosphere monolayers

By combining nanosphere lithography and glancing angle deposition, a morphological transition from disconnected patchy silver (Ag) coated nanosphere particles to a connected Ag nanohole sheet on close-packed nanosphere monolayers has been demonstrated, which significantly changes the optical property of the Ag nanostructure deposited. For different sized nanosphere monolayers, when the vapor incident angle was set to be 55°, the transmission spectra showed complicated features when the Ag deposition thickness was less than 60 nm. When the thickness was large enough (≥60 nm), a distinguished extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) peak was observed. The EOT peak wavelength position is independent of the Ag thickness deposited and is proportional to the nanosphere diameter. The obtained EOT peaks possess a high quality factor and have high transmission values compared to those reported in the literature for similar structures. The Monte Carlo growth simulations demonstrate the morphological transition from the patchy arrays to nanohole arrays while the electromagnetic numerical calculations confirm the change in the optical properties. Such a high quality EOT response could be used for constructing better sensors or developing other plasmonic applications.

Nanosphere Lithography for Structuring Polycrystalline Diamond Films

This paper deals with the structuring of polycrystalline diamond thin films using the technique of nanosphere lithography. The presented multistep approaches relied on a spin-coated self-assembled monolayer of polystyrene spheres, which served as a lithographic mask for the further custom nanofabrication steps. Various arrays of diamond nanostructures—close-packed and non-close-packed monolayers over substrates with various levels of surface roughness, noble metal films over nanosphere arrays, ordered arrays of holes, and unordered pores—were created using reactive ion etching, chemical vapour deposition, metallization, and/or lift-off processes. The size and shape of the lithographic mask was altered using oxygen plasma etching. The periodicity of the final structure was defined by the initial diameter of the spheres. The surface morphology of the samples was characterized using scanning electron microscopy. The advantages and limitations of the fabrication technique are discussed. Finally, the potential applications (e.g., photonics, plasmonics) of the obtained nanostructures are reviewed.

Magneto-plasmonic properties of Ag-Co composite nano-triangle arrays

The magneto-plasmonic properties of Ag-Co composite nano-triangle arrays are investigated. Both plasmonic and magnetic properties of the samples are found to strongly depend on the composition ratio of Ag and Co. Composite nano-triangle arrays exhibit strong plasmonic properties and low magneto-optics (MO) effect with high composition of Ag, and vice versa. The enhanced magneto-optic effect is also observed to be coincident with the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties, i.e. the maximum Faraday effect occurs at the LSPR wavelength, which is due to locally high E-field. The composite triangle arrays with the 60% Co content show high plasmonic-MO performances characterized by magneto-optics-plasmonic correlation factor. All experimental results are confirmed by finite-difference time domain calculations.

Improving LSPR sensing performance using multilayered composition graded Ag-Cu nanotriangle arrays

Patterned nanotriangle arrays with composition graded and multilayered Ag-Cu were fabricated by a co-deposition and nanosphere lithography process. With the increase of the number of layers or constructing a continuum graded layer, the index sensitivity of the resulting nanotriangles kept on increasing, indicating that the graded boundaries can improve plasmon resonance sensing.

Interplay between magnetic anisotropies in CoAu and Co films and antidot arrays: effects on the spin configuration and hysteretic behavior

We studied (i) a set of three Co : Au continuous films, grown by sputtering co-deposition (∼80 nm thick) with concentration ratios of 2 : 1, 1 : 1 and 1 : 0 (i.e., a pure Co film was also included), and (ii) a corresponding set of antidot arrays, produced by nanosphere lithography with the same hexagonal pattern (nominal lattice periodicity ∼520 nm). The samples were investigated by atomic and magnetic force microscopy and SQUID magnetometry. A twofold aim was fulfilled: to gain information on the magnetism of the CoAu compound (saturation magnetization, effective in-plane and out-of-plane anisotropy, exchange stiffness constant and magnetostrictive behavior) and to compare the magnetic behavior of the continuous and patterned samples. The continuous films exhibited a variety of hysteretic behaviours and magnetic configurations, ruled by the interplay between different magnetic anisotropy terms (magnetocrystalline, magnetoelastic and shape). The Co1Au1 film was anisotropic in the plane, whereas Co2Au1 and Co were isotropic and had an out-of-plane magnetization component; stripe domains were observed in Co2Au1, resulting in a transcritical hysteresis loop. A key role in determining these properties was ascribed to the magnetoelastic anisotropy term. Unlike the continuous films, the antidot arrays showed a similar hysteretic behavior and important similarities in the spin configuration were pointed out, despite the different compositions. We argue, also based on micromagnetic simulations, that this occurred because the nanopatterning enabled a local modification of the shape anisotropy, thus smoothing out the differences observed in the continuous films.
