Trapping and levitation of a dielectric sphere with off-centred Gaussian beams. I. Experimental

Multi-pulse laser-induced bubble formation and nanoparticle aggregation using MoS2 nanoparticles

Understanding of how particles and light interact in a liquid environment is vital for optical and biological applications. MoS₂ has been shown to enhance nonlinear optical phenomena due to the presence of a direct excitonic resonance. Its use in biological applications is predicated on knowledge of how MoS₂ interacts with ultrafast (< 1 ps) pulses. In this experiment, the interaction between two femtosecond pulses and MoS₂ nanoparticles suspended in liquid is studied. We found that the laser pulses induce bubble formation on the surface of a nanoparticle and a nanoparticle aggregate then forms on the surface of the trapped bubble. The processes of formation of the bubble and the nanoparticle aggregation are intertwined.

Optically driven oscillations of ellipsoidal particles. Part II: ray-optics calculations

We report numerical calculations on the mechanical effects of light on micrometer-sized dielectric ellipsoids immersed in water. We used a simple two-dimensional ray-optics model to compute the radiation pressure forces and torques exerted on the object as a function of position and orientation within the laser beam. Integration of the equations of motion, written in the Stokes limit, yields the particle dynamics that we investigated for different aspect ratios k. Whether the beam is collimated or focused, the results show that above a critical aspect ratio k(C), the ellipsoids cannot be stably trapped on the beam axis; the particle never comes to rest and rather oscillates permanently in a back-and-forth motion involving both translation and rotation in the vicinity of the beam. Such oscillations are a direct evidence of the non-conservative character of optical forces. Conversely, stable trapping can be achieved for k < k(C) with the particle standing idle in a vertical position. These predictions are in very good qualitative agreement with experimental observations. The physical origin of the instability may be understood from the force and torque fields whose structures greatly depend on the ellipsoid aspect ratio and beam diameter. The oscillations arise from a non-linear coupling of the forces and torques and the torque amplitude was identified as the bifurcation control parameter. Interestingly, simulations predict that sustained oscillations can be suppressed through the use of two coaxial counterpropagating beams, which may be of interest whenever a static equilibrium is required as in basic force and torque measurements or technological applications.

Optical dynamometry to study phase transitions in lipid membranes

The fluidity of the lipid matrix of cell membranes is crucial for the mobility of various inclusions like proteins. When the lipid bilayer undergoes phase transition from fluid-to-gel phase, the shear surface viscosity of the membrane diverges, thus hindering the motion of the membrane inclusions. On the other hand, the membrane bending stiffness drops down, and below the main phase transition, drastically increases with lowering the temperature. A tool to study the membrane properties when the lipid bilayer crosses the phase transition is provided by optical trapping and manipulation of microspheres attached to the membrane. Giant unilamellar vesicles are used, which allow for direct visualization of the membrane response, as model membranes. Following the motion of one or two particles attached to a vesicle, the microscope can provide evidence for the membrane elasticity and state of fluidity. As forces acting on the spheres, one can use gravity, thermal noise, or radiation pressure force.

Electrically induced interactions between colloidal particles in the vicinity of a conducting plane

We address the problem of two-dimensional (2D) colloidal aggregation driven by an ac electrical field, by observing an aqueous dispersion of latex microspheres in contact with a conducting surface. Using micron-sized carboxylated polystyrene particles, we have systematically investigated the aggregation process, as a function of particle size and charge, and of the applied electric field amplitude and frequency. A low-density 2D phase is observed at high frequency (typically above 1 kHz), while at low frequency (below a "contact frequency" nu(c)) the collection of particles collapses into disconnected compact aggregates of crystalline (hexagonal) structure. We argue that this scenario is governed by the competition between an attractive force, of electrohydrodynamic nature, and a repulsive force, basically an electrical dipole-dipole interaction. Both contributions are revealed and analyzed in independent experiments on isolated particle pairs, using optical manipulation and dynamometry.

Double emulsions: a tool for probing thin-film metastability

We study the kinetics of the release of monodisperse water-in-oil-in-water double emulsions in the regime dominated by coalescence of the internal aqueous droplets onto the globule interface. By measuring the rate of release of adsorbed droplets, we directly determine the average lifetime of the thin film that forms between the small internal droplets and the globule surface. Therefore, the activation energy and the natural frequency of the hole nucleation process within the adhesive thin liquid films are unambiguously deduced.

Pretransitional effects in dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine vesicle membranes: optical dynamometry study

We used micron-sized latex spheres to probe the phase state and the viscoelastic properties of dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) bilayers as a function of temperature. One or two particles were manipulated and stuck to a DMPC giant vesicle by means of an optical trap. Above the fluid-gel main transition temperature, T(m) congruent with 23.4 degrees C, the particles could move on the surface of the vesicle, spontaneously (Brownian motion) or driven by an external force, either gravity or the laser beam's radiation pressure. From the analysis of the particle motions, we deduced the values of the membrane hydrodynamic shear viscosity, eta(s), and found that it would increase considerably near T(m). Below T(m), the long-distance motion of the particles was blocked. We performed experiments with two particles stuck on the membrane. By optical dynamometry, we measured the elastic resistance of the membrane to a variation in the interparticle distance and found that it would decrease considerably (down to zero) when the temperature was increased to T(m). We propose an interpretation relating the elastic response to the membrane curvature modulus, k(C). In this scheme, the two-bead dynamometry experiments provide a direct measurement of k(C) in the P'(beta) phase of lipid bilayers.

Axial force acting on a dielectric sphere in a focused laser beam

We present the detailed behavior of the axial force acting on a dielectric sphere exerted by the optical pressure of a focused Gaussian laser beam. Comparison is made between the numerical results and those calculated from the radiation pressure cross section. There is also a discussion as to whether the expressions for the axial force given in this paper are consistent with the previously reported experimental results. Moreover, a simple experimental method to measure the axial force on a polystyrene sphere suspended in water is demonstrated, and fairly good agreement between theoretical and experimental results was obtained.

Design for fully steerable dual-trap optical tweezers

A design for complete beam steering (in three dimensions) of one or two optical tweezers traps is presented. The two most important requirements for efficient and stable movement of an optical trap are identified. A detailed recipe for the construction of a movable optical tweezers trap that fulfills these requirements is given (exemplified with an inverted microscope). The system has been found to allow for precise and free movements of both traps in all three dimensions in a dual-trap optical tweezers configuration and to be robust and reliable, as well as forgiving of small misalignments in the optical system.
