Quantum storage of orbital angular momentum entanglement in an atomic ensemble

Towards optical toroidal wavepackets through tight focusing of the cylindrical vector two dimensional spatiotemporal optical vortex

Spatiotemporal optical vortices (STOVs) carrying transverse orbital angular momentum (OAM) are of rapidly growing interest for the field of optics due to the new degree of freedom that can be exploited. In this paper, we propose cylindrical vector two dimensional STOVs (2D-STOVs) containing two orthogonal transverse OAMs in both x-t and y-t planes for the first time, and investigate the tightly focusing of such fields using the Richards-Wolf vectorial diffraction theory. Highly confined spatiotemporal wavepackets with polarization structure akin to toroidal topology is generated, whose spatiotemporal intensity distributions resemble the shape of Yo-Yo balls. Tightly focused radially polarized 2D-STOVs will produce wavepackets towards transverse magnetic toroidal topology, while the focused azimuthally polarized 2D-STOVs will give rise to wavepackets towards transverse electric toroidal topology. The presented method may pave a way to experimentally generate the optical toroidal wavepackets in a controllable way, with potential applications in electron acceleration, nanophotonics, energy, transient light-matter interaction, spectroscopy, quantum information processing, etc.

Towards higher-dimensional structured light

Structured light refers to the arbitrarily tailoring of optical fields in all their degrees of freedom (DoFs), from spatial to temporal. Although orbital angular momentum (OAM) is perhaps the most topical example, and celebrating 30 years since its connection to the spatial structure of light, control over other DoFs is slowly gaining traction, promising access to higher-dimensional forms of structured light. Nevertheless, harnessing these new DoFs in quantum and classical states remains challenging, with the toolkit still in its infancy. In this perspective, we discuss methods, challenges, and opportunities for the creation, detection, and control of multiple DoFs for higher-dimensional structured light. We present a roadmap for future development trends, from fundamental research to applications, concentrating on the potential for larger-capacity, higher-security information processing and communication, and beyond.

Deterministic Time-Bin Entanglement between a Single Photon and an Atomic Ensemble

Hybrid matter-photon entanglement is the building block for quantum networks. It is very favorable if the entanglement can be prepared with a high probability. In this Letter, we report the deterministic creation of entanglement between an atomic ensemble and a single photon by harnessing the Rydberg blockade. We design a scheme that creates entanglement between a single photon's temporal modes and the Rydberg levels that host a collective excitation, using a process of cyclical retrieving and patching. The hybrid entanglement is tested via retrieving the atomic excitation as a second photon and performing correlation measurements, which suggest an entanglement fidelity of 87.8%. Our source of matter-photon entanglement will enable the entangling of remote quantum memories with much higher efficiency.

Cavity-Enhanced Atom-Photon Entanglement with Subsecond Lifetime

A cold atomic ensemble suits well for optical quantum memories, and its entanglement with a single photon forms the building block for quantum networks that give promise for many revolutionary applications. Efficiency and lifetime are among the most important figures of merit for a memory. In this Letter, we report the realization of entanglement between an atomic ensemble and a single photon with subsecond lifetime and high efficiency. We engineer dual control modes in a ring cavity to create entanglement and make use of three-dimensional optical lattice to prolong memory lifetime. The memory efficiency is 38% for 0.1 s storage. We verify the atom-photon entanglement after 1 s storage by testing the Bell inequality with a result of S=2.36±0.14.

Witnessing Entanglement In Compton Scattering Processes Via Mutually Unbiased Bases

We present a quantum information theoretic version of the Klein-Nishina formula. This formulation singles out the quantity, the a priori visibility, that quantifies the ability to deduce the polarisation property of single photons. The Kraus-type structure allows a straightforward generalisation to the multiphoton cases, relevant in the decay of positronium which is utilized e.g. for metabolic PET-imaging (Positron- Emission- Tomograph). Predicted by theory but never experimentally proven, the two- or three-photon states should be entangled. We provide an experimentally feasible method to witness entanglement for these processes via MUBs (Mutually Unbiased Bases), exploiting Bohr's complementarity. Last but not least we present explicit cases exemplifying the interrelation of geometry and entanglement including relations to its potentiality for teleportation schemes or Bell inequality violations or in future for detecting cancer in human beings.

Retrieving Performances of Vortex Beams with GS Algorithm after Transmitting in Different Types of Turbulences

The transmission of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) beam has attracted a lot of attention in the field of free-space optical (FSO) communication. Usually, after transmitting in atmospheric turbulences, the helical phase-front of OAM beams will be severely distorted, and there will exist the intermode crosstalk. As a result, the performance of the communication system will degrade significantly. In this paper, we have investigated the influences of the level of the turbulence strength to the transmitting OAM beams by changing the refractive-index structural parameter of C n 2 and the number of turbulence random phase screens of N in simulation environment. Then, by adopting the Gerchberg-Saxton (GS) algorithm, which can be used to compute the pre-compensation phase and correct the distorted OAM beams, the retrieving performances of transmitting single and multiplexed OAM beams under different turbulence strengths were also investigated. The simulation results show that with increasing the atmospheric-turbulence strength levels determined by the parameters C n 2 and N, the retrieving performances decrease dramatically. When the turbulence strength level is selected within an appropriate range, the OAM beams can be effectively retrieved by adopting GS algorithm and observing the power density spectrum. Notably, the retrieving performance for the transmission of a single OAM beam is better than that of the multiplexing OAM beam.
