Shapiro Steps in Driven Atomic Josephson Junctions

We study driven atomic Josephson junctions realized by coupling two two-dimensional atomic clouds with a tunneling barrier. By moving the barrier at a constant velocity, dc and ac Josephson regimes are characterized by a zero and nonzero atomic density difference across the junction, respectively. Here, we monitor the dynamics resulting in the system when, in addition to the above constant velocity protocol, the position of the barrier is periodically driven. We demonstrate that the time-averaged particle imbalance features a plateau behavior that is the analog of Shapiro steps observed in driven superconducting Josephson junctions. The underlying dynamics reveals an intriguing interplay of the vortex and phonon excitations, where Shapiro steps are induced via suppression of vortex growth. We study the system with a classical-field dynamics method, and benchmark our findings with a driven circuit dynamics.

Minimal quantum heat pump based on high-frequency driving and non-Markovianity

We propose a minimal setup for a quantum heat pump consisting of two tunnel-coupled quantum dots, each hosting a single level and each being coupled to a different fermionic reservoir. The working principle relies on both non-Markovian system-bath coupling and driving-induced resonant coupling. We describe the system using a reaction-coordinate mapping in combination with Floquet-Born-Markov theory and characterize its performance.

Thermography of the superfluid transition in a strongly interacting Fermi gas

Heat transport can serve as a fingerprint identifying different states of matter. In a normal liquid, a hotspot diffuses, whereas in a superfluid, heat propagates as a wave called "second sound." Direct imaging of heat transport is challenging, and one usually resorts to detecting secondary effects. In this study, we establish thermography of a strongly interacting atomic Fermi gas, whose radio-frequency spectrum provides spatially resolved thermometry with subnanokelvin resolution. The superfluid phase transition was directly observed as the sudden change from thermal diffusion to second-sound propagation and is accompanied by a peak in the second-sound diffusivity. This method yields the full heat and density response of the strongly interacting Fermi gas and therefore all defining properties of Landau's two-fluid hydrodynamics.

Symmetry-Protected Transport through a Lattice with a Local Particle Loss

We study particle transport through a chain of coupled sites connected to free-fermion reservoirs at both ends, subjected to a local particle loss. The transport is characterized by calculating the conductance and particle density in the steady state using the Keldysh formalism for open quantum systems. In addition to a reduction of conductance, we find that transport can remain (almost) unaffected by the loss for certain values of the chemical potential in the lattice. We show that this "protected" transport results from the spatial symmetry of single-particle eigenstates. At a finite voltage, the density profile develops a drop at the lossy site, connected to the onset of nonballistic transport.

Quantum simulation of quantum many-body systems with ultracold two-electron atoms in an optical lattice

Ultracold atoms in an optical lattice provide a unique approach to study quantum many-body systems, previously only possible by using condensed-matter experimental systems. This new approach, often called quantum simulation, becomes possible because of the high controllability of the system parameters and the inherent cleanness without lattice defects and impurities. In this article, we review recent developments in this rapidly growing field of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice, with special focus on quantum simulations using our newly created quantum many-body system of two-electron atoms of ytterbium. In addition, we also mention other interesting possibilities offered by this novel experimental platform, such as applications to precision measurements for studying fundamental physics and a Rydberg atom quantum computation.

Observation of spin-space quantum transport induced by an atomic quantum point contact

Quantum transport is ubiquitous in physics. So far, quantum transport between terminals has been extensively studied in solid state systems from the fundamental point of views such as the quantized conductance to the applications to quantum devices. Recent works have demonstrated a cold-atom analog of a mesoscopic conductor by engineering a narrow conducting channel with optical potentials, which opens the door for a wealth of research of atomtronics emulating mesoscopic electronic devices and beyond. Here we realize an alternative scheme of the quantum transport experiment with ytterbium atoms in a two-orbital optical lattice system. Our system consists of a multi-component Fermi gas and a localized impurity, where the current can be created in the spin space by introducing the spin-dependent interaction with the impurity. We demonstrate a rich variety of localized-impurity-induced quantum transports, which paves the way for atomtronics exploiting spin degrees of freedom.

Ground-state phase diagram of the t-t'-J model

We report results of large-scale ground-state density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations on t-[Formula: see text]-J cylinders with circumferences 6 and 8. We determine a rough phase diagram that appears to approximate the two-dimensional (2D) system. While for many properties, positive and negative [Formula: see text] values ([Formula: see text]) appear to correspond to electron- and hole-doped cuprate systems, respectively, the behavior of superconductivity itself shows an inconsistency between the model and the materials. The [Formula: see text] (hole-doped) region shows antiferromagnetism limited to very low doping, stripes more generally, and the familiar Fermi surface of the hole-doped cuprates. However, we find [Formula: see text] strongly suppresses superconductivity. The [Formula: see text] (electron-doped) region shows the expected circular Fermi pocket of holes around the [Formula: see text] point and a broad low-doped region of coexisting antiferromagnetism and d-wave pairing with a triplet p component at wavevector [Formula: see text] induced by the antiferromagnetism and d-wave pairing. The pairing for the electron low-doped system with [Formula: see text] is strong and unambiguous in the DMRG simulations. At larger doping another broad region with stripes in addition to weaker d-wave pairing and striped p-wave pairing appears. In a small doping region near [Formula: see text] for [Formula: see text], we find an unconventional type of stripe involving unpaired holes located predominantly on chains spaced three lattice spacings apart. The undoped two-leg ladder regions in between mimic the short-ranged spin correlations seen in two-leg Heisenberg ladders.

Thermoelectric Transport in a Correlated Electron System on the Surface of Liquid Helium

We report on the direct observation of the thermoelectric transport in a nondegenerate electron system trapped on the surface of liquid helium. The microwave-induced excitation of the vertical transitions of electrons between the surface-bound states results in their lateral flow, which we were able to detect by employing a segmented electrode configuration. We show that this flow of electrons arises due to the Seebeck effect. Our experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical calculations based on kinetic equations. This demonstrates the importance of the fast electron-electron collisions, which, in particular, leads to the violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law in this system.

In Situ Thermometry of Fermionic Cold-Atom Quantum Wires

We study ensembles of fermionic cold-atom quantum wires with tunable transverse mode population and single-wire resolution. From in situ density profiles, we determine the temperature of the atomic wires in the weakly interacting limit and reconstruct the underlying potential landscape. By varying atom number and temperature, we control the occupation of the transverse modes and study the 1D-3D crossover. In the 1D limit, we observe an increase of the reduced temperature T/T_{F} at nearly constant entropy per particle S/Nk_{B}. The ability to probe individual atomic wires in situ paves the way to quantitatively study equilibrium and transport properties of strongly interacting 1D Fermi gases.

Clausius inequality for finite baths reveals universal efficiency improvements

We study entropy production in nanoscale devices, which are coupled to finite heat baths. This situation is of growing experimental relevance, but most theoretical approaches rely on a formulation of the second law valid only for infinite baths. We fix this problem by pointing out that Clausius' paper from 1865 already contains an adequate formulation of the second law for finite heat baths, which can be also rigorously derived from a microscopic quantum description. This Clausius inequality shows that nonequilibrium processes are less irreversible than previously thought. We use it to correctly extend Landauer's principle to finite baths and we demonstrate that any heat engine in contact with finite baths has a higher efficiency than previously thought. Importantly, our results are easy to study, requiring only the knowledge of the average bath energy.

Universal pair polaritons in a strongly interacting Fermi gas

Cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) manipulates the coupling of light with matter, and allows several emitters to couple coherently with one light mode¹. However, even in a many-body system, the light-matter coupling mechanism has so far been restricted to one-body processes. Leveraging cavity QED for the quantum simulation of complex, many-body systems has thus far relied on multi-photon processes, scaling down the light-matter interaction to the low energy and slow time scales of the many-body problem^2-5. Here we report cavity QED experiments using molecular transitions in a strongly interacting Fermi gas, directly coupling cavity photons to pairs of atoms. The interplay of strong light-matter and strong interparticle interactions leads to well-resolved pair polaritons-hybrid excitations coherently mixing photons, atom pairs and molecules. The dependence of the pair-polariton spectrum on interatomic interactions is universal, independent of the transition used, demonstrating a direct mapping between pair correlations in the ground state and the optical spectrum. This represents a magnification of many-body effects by two orders of magnitude in energy. In the dispersive regime, it enables fast, minimally destructive measurements of pair correlations, and opens the way to their measurement at the quantum limit and their coherent manipulation using dynamical, quantized optical fields.

Collective Excitations and Nonequilibrium Phase Transition in Dissipative Fermionic Superfluids

We predict a new mechanism to induce collective excitations and a nonequilibrium phase transition of fermionic superfluids via a sudden switch on of two-body loss, for which we extend the BCS theory to fully incorporate a change in particle number. We find that a sudden switch on of dissipation induces an amplitude oscillation of the superfluid order parameter accompanied by a chirped phase rotation as a consequence of particle loss. We demonstrate that when dissipation is introduced to one of the two superfluids coupled via a Josephson junction, it gives rise to a nonequilibrium dynamical phase transition characterized by the vanishing dc Josephson current. The dissipation-induced collective modes and nonequilibrium phase transition can be realized with ultracold fermionic atoms subject to inelastic collisions.

Advances in Atomtronics

Atomtronics is a relatively new subfield of atomic physics that aims to realize the device behavior of electronic components in ultracold atom-optical systems. The fact that these systems are coherent makes them particularly interesting since, in addition to current, one can impart quantum states onto the current carriers themselves or perhaps perform quantum computational operations on them. After reviewing the fundamental ideas of this subfield, we report on the theoretical and experimental progress made towards developing externally-driven and closed loop devices. The functionality and potential applications for these atom analogs to electronic and spintronic systems is also discussed.

Tunneling Transport of Unitary Fermions across the Superfluid Transition

We investigate the transport of a Fermi gas with unitarity-limited interactions across the superfluid phase transition, probing its response to a direct current (dc) drive through a tunnel junction. As the superfluid critical temperature is crossed from below, we observe the evolution from a highly nonlinear to an Ohmic conduction characteristic, associated with the critical breakdown of the Josephson dc current induced by pair condensate depletion. Moreover, we reveal a large and dominant anomalous contribution to resistive currents, which reaches its maximum at the lowest attained temperature, fostered by the tunnel coupling between the condensate and phononic Bogoliubov-Anderson excitations. Increasing the temperature, while the zeroing of supercurrents marks the transition to the normal phase, the conductance drops considerably but remains much larger than that of a normal, uncorrelated Fermi gas tunneling through the same junction. We attribute such enhanced transport to incoherent tunneling of sound modes, which remain weakly damped in the collisional hydrodynamic fluid of unpaired fermions at unitarity.

Universal sound diffusion in a strongly interacting Fermi gas

Transport of strongly interacting fermions is crucial for the properties of modern materials, nuclear fission, the merging of neutron stars, and the expansion of the early Universe. Here, we observe a universal quantum limit of diffusivity in a homogeneous, strongly interacting atomic Fermi gas by studying sound propagation and its attenuation through the coupled transport of momentum and heat. In the normal state, the sound diffusivity D monotonically decreases upon lowering the temperature, in contrast to the diverging behavior of weakly interacting Fermi liquids. Below the superfluid transition temperature, D attains a universal value set by the ratio of Planck's constant and the particle mass. Our findings inform theories of fermion transport, with relevance for hydrodynamic flow of electrons, neutrons, and quarks.

In Situ Thermometry of a Cold Fermi Gas via Dephasing Impurities

The precise measurement of low temperatures is a challenging, important, and fundamental task for quantum science. In particular, in situ thermometry is highly desirable for cold atomic systems due to their potential for quantum simulation. Here, we demonstrate that the temperature of a noninteracting Fermi gas can be accurately inferred from the nonequilibrium dynamics of impurities immersed within it, using an interferometric protocol and established experimental methods. Adopting tools from the theory of quantum parameter estimation, we show that our proposed scheme achieves optimal precision in the relevant temperature regime for degenerate Fermi gases in current experiments. We also discover an intriguing trade-off between measurement time and thermometric precision that is controlled by the impurity-gas coupling, with weak coupling leading to the greatest sensitivities. This is explained as a consequence of the slow decoherence associated with the onset of the Anderson orthogonality catastrophe, which dominates the gas dynamics following its local interaction with the immersed impurity.

Design and characterization of a quantum heat pump in a driven quantum gas

We propose the implementation of a quantum heat pump with ultracold atoms. It is based on two periodically driven coherently coupled quantum dots using ultracold atoms. Each dot possesses two relevant quantum states and is coupled to a fermionic reservoir. The working principle is based on energy-selective driving-induced resonant tunneling processes, where a particle that tunnels from one dot to the other either absorbs or emits the energy quantum ℏω associated with the driving frequency, depending on its energy. We characterize the device using Floquet theory and compare simple analytical estimates to numerical simulations based on the Floquet-Born-Markov formalism. In particular, we show that driving-induced heating is directly linked to the micromotion of the Floquet states of the system.

Energy current manipulation and reversal of rectification in graded XXZ spin chains

This work is devoted to the investigation of nontrivial transport properties in many-body quantum systems. Precisely, we study transport in the steady state of spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ chains, driven out of equilibrium by two magnetic baths at their end points. We take graded versions of the model, i.e. asymmetric chains in which some structure gradually changes in space. We investigate how we can manipulate and control the energy and spin currents of such chains by tuning external and/or inner parameters. In particular, we describe the occurrence of energy current rectification and its reversal due to the application of external magnetic fields. We show that, after carefully chosen inner parameters for the system, by turning on an external magnetic field we can find spin and energy currents propagating in different directions. More interestingly, we may find cases in which rectifications of energy and spin currents occur in opposite directions, i.e. if the energy current is larger when flowing from left to right side, then the spin current is larger if it flows from right to left side. We still describe situations with inversion of the energy current direction as we increase the system asymmetry. We stress that our work aims the development of theoretical knowledge as well as the stimulation of future experimental applications.

Majorana corner modes in an s-wave second order topological superfluid

In sharp contrast to conventional topological superfluids, higher order (order r  >  1) topological superfluids in n dimensions do not host n  -  1 dimensional Majorana boundary states, instead host n  -  r dimensional Majorana excitations. In this paper, we propose Majorana corner modes can emerge in a second order superfluid with s-wave pairing, instead of unconventional pairings such as d-wave and [Formula: see text]-wave pairings in most of previous proposals. There are three key ingredients in this scheme consisting of a topological insulator, an in-plane Zeeman field, and an s-wave pairing. Based on the low energy theory for edge states, where the effective Dirac mass sign changes at the corner, we unveil the emergence of Majorana corner modes. Our proposal provides a promising platform for implementing 2D second order topological superfluids and Majorana corner modes.

Critical Transport and Vortex Dynamics in a Thin Atomic Josephson Junction

We study the onset of dissipation in an atomic Josephson junction between Fermi superfluids in the molecular Bose-Einstein condensation limit of strong attraction. Our simulations identify the critical population imbalance and the maximum Josephson current delimiting dissipationless and dissipative transport, in quantitative agreement with recent experiments. We unambiguously link dissipation to vortex ring nucleation and dynamics, demonstrating that quantum phase slips are responsible for the observed resistive current. Our work directly connects microscopic features with macroscopic dissipative transport, providing a comprehensive description of vortex ring dynamics in three-dimensional inhomogeneous constricted superfluids at zero and finite temperatures.

Transport signatures of symmetry protection in 1D Floquet topological insulators

Time-periodic external drives have emerged as a powerful tool to artificially create topological phases of matter. Prime examples are Floquet topological insulators (FTIs), where a gapped bulk supports in-gap edge states, protected against symmetry-preserving local perturbations. Similar to an ordinary static topological insulator, the robustness of an edge state in a one-dimensional (1D) FTI shows up as a pinning of its quasienergy level, but now inside one of two distinct bulk gaps. Here we propose a scheme for probing this unique feature by observing transport characteristics of a 1D finite-sized FTI attached to external leads. We present predictions for transmission spectra using a nonequilibrium Green's function approach. Our analysis covers FTIs with time-independent and periodically driven boundary perturbations which either preserve or break the protecting chiral symmetry.

Quantitative Acoustic Models for Superfluid Circuits

We experimentally realize a highly tunable superfluid oscillator circuit in a quantum gas of ultracold atoms and develop and verify a simple lumped-element description of this circuit. At low oscillator currents, we demonstrate that the circuit is accurately described as a Helmholtz resonator, a fundamental element of acoustic circuits. At larger currents, the breakdown of the Helmholtz regime is heralded by a turbulent shedding of vortices and density waves. Although a simple phase-slip model offers qualitative insights into the circuit's resistive behavior, our results indicate deviations from the phase-slip model. A full understanding of the dissipation in superfluid circuits will thus require the development of empirical models of the turbulent dynamics in this system, as have been developed for classical acoustic systems.

Quantized Conductance through a Spin-Selective Atomic Point Contact

We implement a microscopic spin filter for cold fermionic atoms in a quantum point contact (QPC) and create fully spin-polarized currents while retaining conductance quantization. Key to our scheme is a near-resonant optical tweezer inducing a large effective Zeeman shift inside the QPC while its local character limits dissipation. We observe a renormalization of this shift due to interactions of only a few atoms in the QPC. Our work represents the analog of an actual spintronic device and paves the way to studying the interplay between spin splitting and interactions far from equilibrium.

Controlling Quantum Transport via Dissipation Engineering

Inspired by the microscopic control over dissipative processes in quantum optics and cold atoms, we develop an open-system framework to study dissipative control of transport in strongly interacting fermionic systems, relevant for both solid-state and cold-atom experiments. We show how subgap currents exhibiting multiple Andreev reflections-the stimulated transport of electrons in the presence of Cooper pairs-can be controlled via engineering of superconducting leads or superfluid atomic gases. Our approach incorporates dissipation within the channel, which is naturally occurring and can be engineered in cold gas experiments. This opens opportunities for engineering many phenomena with transport in strongly interacting systems. As examples, we consider particle loss and dephasing, and note different behavior for currents with different microscopic origin. We also show how to induce nonreciprocal electron and Cooper-pair currents.

Quantum State of the Fermionic Carriers in a Transport Channel Connecting Particle Reservoirs

We analyze the quantum state of fermionic carriers in a transport channel attached to a particle reservoir. The analysis is done from first principles by considering microscopic models of the reservoir and transport channel. In the case of infinite effective temperature of the reservoir we demonstrate a full agreement between the results of straightforward numerical simulations of the system dynamics and the solution of the master equation on the single-particle density matrix of the carriers in the channel. This allows us to predict the quantum state of carriers in the case where the transport channel connects two reservoirs with different chemical potentials.

Thermodynamic Uncertainty Relations from Exchange Fluctuation Theorems

Thermodynamic uncertainty relations (TURs) place strict bounds on the fluctuations of thermodynamic quantities in terms of the associated entropy production. In this Letter, we identify the tightest (and saturable) matrix-valued TUR that can be derived from the exchange fluctuation theorems describing the statistics of heat and particle flow between multiple systems of arbitrary dimensions. Our result holds for both quantum and classical systems, undergoing general finite-time nonstationary processes. Moreover, it provides bounds not only for the variances, but also for the correlations between thermodynamic quantities. To demonstrate the relevance of TURs to the design of nanoscale machines, we consider the operation of a 2-qubit swap engine undergoing an Otto cycle and show how our results can be used to place strict bounds on the correlations between heat and work.

Continuous-Variable Entanglement Test in Driven Quantum Contacts

The standard entanglement test using the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality is known to fail in mesoscopic junctions at finite temperatures. Since this is due to the bidirectional particle flow, a similar failure is expected to occur in an ac-driven contact. We develop a continuous-variable entanglement test suitable for electrons and holes that are created by the ac drive. At low enough temperatures the generalized Bell inequality is violated in junctions with low conductance or a small number of transport channels and with ac voltages which create few electron-hole pairs per cycle. Our ac-entanglement test depends on the total number of electron-hole pairs and on the distribution of probabilities of pair creations similar to the Fano factor.

Photovoltaic Effect of Atomtronics Induced by an Artificial Gauge Field

We investigate the photovoltaic effect of atomtronics induced by an artificial gauge field in four optical potentials. Under an effective magnetic flux, the atom occupation probability would be polarized in a double-dot system, which gives rise to an atomic current. The relation between the atomic current and magnetic flux behaves like the current-phase property in a Josephson junction. A neutral particle photovoltaic cell is well defined by the atomic opened system that has an effective voltage and two different poles corresponding to two internal states of atomtronics. The atom flow is controllable by tuning the direction of incident light and other parameters. The detection of the atomic current intensity is available through an optical emission spectrum in experiments.

Hypersonic Bose-Einstein condensates in accelerator rings

Some of the most sensitive and precise measurements-for example, of inertia¹, gravity² and rotation³-are based on matter-wave interferometry with free-falling atomic clouds. To achieve very high sensitivities, the interrogation time has to be very long, and consequently the experimental apparatus needs to be very tall (in some cases reaching ten or even one hundred metres) or the experiments must be performed in microgravity in space^4-7. Cancelling gravitational acceleration (for example, in atomtronic circuits^8,9 and matter-wave guides¹⁰) is expected to result in compact devices with extended interrogation times and therefore increased sensitivity. Here we demonstrate smooth and controllable matter-wave guides by transporting Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) over macroscopic distances. We use a neutral-atom accelerator ring to bring BECs to very high speeds (16 times their sound velocity) and transport them in a magnetic matter-wave guide for 15 centimetres while fully preserving their internal coherence. The resulting high angular momentum of more than 40,000ħ per atom (where ħ is the reduced Planck constant) gives access to the higher Landau levels of quantum Hall states, and the hypersonic velocities achieved, combined with our ability to control potentials with picokelvin precision, will facilitate the study of superfluidity and give rise to tunnelling and a large range of transport regimes of ultracold atoms^11-13. Coherent matter-wave guides are expected to enable interaction times of several seconds in highly compact devices and lead to portable guided-atom interferometers for applications such as inertial navigation and gravity mapping.

Conductivity Spectrum of Ultracold Atoms in an Optical Lattice

We measure the conductivity of neutral fermions in a cubic optical lattice. Using in situ fluorescence microscopy, we observe the alternating current resultant from a single-frequency uniform force applied by displacement of a weak harmonic trapping potential. In the linear response regime, a neutral-particle analog of Ohm's law gives the conductivity as the ratio of total current to force. For various lattice depths, temperatures, interaction strengths, and fillings, we measure both real and imaginary conductivity, up to a frequency sufficient to capture the transport dynamics within the lowest band. The spectral width of the real conductivity reveals the current dissipation rate in the lattice, and the integrated spectral weight is related to thermodynamic properties of the system through a sum rule. The global conductivity decreases with increased band-averaged effective mass, which at high temperatures approaches a T-linear regime. Relaxation of current is observed to require a finite lattice depth, which breaks Galilean invariance and enables damping through collisions between fermions.

Fluctuation-Induced Quantum Zeno Effect

An isolated quantum gas with a localized loss features a nonmonotonic behavior of the particle loss rate as an incarnation of the quantum Zeno effect, as recently shown in experiments with cold atomic gases. While this effect can be understood in terms of local, microscopic physics, we show that novel many-body effects emerge when nonlinear gapless quantum fluctuations become important. To this end, we investigate the effect of a local dissipative impurity on a one-dimensional gas of interacting fermions. We show that the escape probability for modes close to the Fermi energy vanishes for an arbitrary strength of the dissipation. In addition, transport properties across the impurity are qualitatively modified, similarly to the Kane-Fisher barrier problem. We substantiate these findings using both a microscopic model of spinless fermions and a Luttinger liquid description.

Glassy Properties of Anderson Localization: Pinning, Avalanches, and Chaos

I present the results of extensive numerical simulations, which reveal the glassy properties of Anderson localization in dimension two at zero temperature: pinning, avalanches, and chaos. I first show that strong localization confines quantum transport along paths that are pinned by disorder but can change abruptly and suddenly (avalanches) when the energy is varied. I determine the roughness exponent ζ characterizing the transverse fluctuations of these paths and find that its value ζ=2/3 is the same as for the directed polymer problem. Finally, I characterize the chaos property, namely, the fragility of the conductance with respect to small perturbations in the disorder configuration. It is linked to interference effects and universal conductance fluctuations at weak disorder and more spin-glass-like behavior at strong disorder.

Communication: Gibbs phenomenon and the emergence of the steady-state in quantum transport

Simulations are increasingly employing explicit reservoirs-internal, finite regions-to drive electronic or particle transport. This naturally occurs in simulations of transport via ultracold atomic gases. Whether the simulation is numerical or physical, these approaches rely on the rapid development of the steady state. We demonstrate that steady state formation is a manifestation of the Gibbs phenomenon well-known in signal processing and in truncated discrete Fourier expansions. Each particle separately develops into an individual steady state due to the spreading of its wave packet in energy. The rise to the steady state for an individual particle depends on the particle energy-and thus can be slow-and ringing oscillations appear due to filtering of the response through the electronic bandwidth. However, the rise to the total steady state-the one from all particles-is rapid, with time scale π/W, where W is the bandwidth. Ringing oscillations are now also filtered through the bias window, and they decay with a higher power. The Gibbs constant-the overshoot of the first ring-can appear in the simulation error. These results shed light on the formation of the steady state and support the practical use of explicit reservoirs to simulate transport at the nanoscale or using ultracold atomic lattices.

Bad metallic transport in a cold atom Fermi-Hubbard system

Strong interactions in many-body quantum systems complicate the interpretation of charge transport in such materials. To shed light on this problem, we study transport in a clean quantum system: ultracold lithium-6 in a two-dimensional optical lattice, a testing ground for strong interaction physics in the Fermi-Hubbard model. We determine the diffusion constant by measuring the relaxation of an imposed density modulation and modeling its decay hydrodynamically. The diffusion constant is converted to a resistivity by using the Nernst-Einstein relation. That resistivity exhibits a linear temperature dependence and shows no evidence of saturation, two characteristic signatures of a bad metal. The techniques we developed in this study may be applied to measurements of other transport quantities, including the optical conductivity and thermopower.

Breakdown of the Wiedemann-Franz law in a unitary Fermi gas

We report on coupled heat and particle transport measurements through a quantum point contact (QPC) connecting two reservoirs of resonantly interacting, finite temperature Fermi gases. After heating one of them, we observe a particle current flowing from cold to hot. We monitor the temperature evolution of the reservoirs and find that the system evolves after an initial response into a nonequilibrium steady state with finite temperature and chemical potential differences across the QPC. In this state any relaxation in the form of heat and particle currents vanishes. From our measurements we extract the transport coefficients of the QPC and deduce a Lorenz number violating the Wiedemann-Franz law by one order of magnitude, a characteristic persisting even for a wide contact. In contrast, the Seebeck coefficient takes a value close to that expected for a noninteracting Fermi gas and shows a smooth decrease as the atom density close to the QPC is increased beyond the superfluid transition. Our work represents a fermionic analog of the fountain effect observed with superfluid helium and poses challenges for microscopic modeling of the finite temperature dynamics of the unitary Fermi gas.

Realistic Floquet Semimetal with Exotic Topological Linkages between Arbitrarily Many Nodal Loops

Valence and conduction bands in nodal loop semimetals (NLSMs) touch along closed loops in momentum space. If such loops can proliferate and link intricately, NLSMs become exotic topological phases, which require nonlocal hopping and are therefore unrealistic in conventional quantum materials or cold atom systems alike. In this Letter, we show how this hurdle can be surmounted through an experimentally feasible periodic driving scheme. In particular, by tuning the period of a two-step periodic driving or certain experimentally accessible parameters, we can generate arbitrarily many nodal loops that are linked with various levels of complexity. Furthermore, we propose to use both a Berry-phase related winding number and the Alexander polynomial topological invariant to characterize the fascinating linkages among the nodal loops. This Letter thus presents a class of exotic Floquet topological phases that has hitherto not been proposed in any realistic setup. Possible experimental confirmation of such exotic topological phases is also discussed.
