Nonlinear dielectric effects in liquids: a guided tour

Dielectric and Shear-Mechanical "Humps" in the Nonlinear Response of Polar Glassformers

Many glassformers display electrorheological effects and a pronounced maximum in their frequency dependent nonlinear dielectric response. The latter so-called "hump" feature was often linked to correlated-particle motions and, so far, was not explored in the large-perturbation mechanical response of viscous liquids. To first clarify the electro-viscoelastic coupling in the linear domain, using the modified Gemant, DiMarzio, and Bishop model, it is demonstrated how the small-amplitude shear mechanical response of S-methoxy-PC, a derivative of propylene carbonate, can be related to its complex dielectric permittivity. Then, in the nonlinear regime, a "hump" feature is identified in the rheological third-order shear modulus of S-methoxy-PC and of another polar glassformer, propylene glycol. Thus, the observation of a "hump" in the cubic response of viscous liquids does not necessarily rely on the application of electrical fields.

Fast vs slow physical aging of a glass forming liquid

Using electric fields to initiate the process of physical aging has facilitated measurements of structural recovery dynamics on the time scale of milliseconds. This, however, complicates the interesting comparison with aging processes due to a temperature jump, as these are significantly slower. This study takes a step toward comparing the results of field and temperature perturbations by providing data on field-induced structural recovery of vinyl ethylene carbonate at two different time scales: 1.0 ms at 181 K and 33 s at 169 K, i.e., 4.5 decades apart. It is found that structural recovery is a factor of two slower than structural relaxation in equilibrium, with the latter determined via dielectric relaxation in the limit of linear response. The relation between recovery and relaxation dynamics remains temperature invariant across the present experimental range.

Nongeneric structural-relaxation shape of supercooled liquids: Insights from linear and nonlinear experiments on propylene glycol

Currently, there is a debate whether the structural relaxation of polar liquids is more faithfully reflected (i) by the generically shaped response detected by dynamic light scattering or rather (ii) by the slower, more stretched, system-dependent susceptibility response recorded by dielectric spectroscopy. In this work, nonlinearly induced transients probing structural relaxation reveal that near the glass transition, alternative (ii) is appropriate for propylene glycol. Results from shear rheology and from calorimetry corroborate this finding, underscoring the previously advanced notion (Moch et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 228001, 2022) that the reorientationally probed structural susceptibility of viscous liquids displays a nongeneric spectral shape.

Nonlinear response theory for Markov processes. IV. The asymmetric double-well potential model revisited

The dielectric response of noninteracting dipoles is discussed in the framework of the classical model of stochastic reorientations in an asymmetric double-well potential (ADWP). In the nonlinear regime, this model exhibits some pecularities in the static response. We find that the saturation behavior of the symmetric double-well potential model does not follow the Langevin function and only in the linear regime are the standard results recovered. If a finite asymmetry is assumed, then the nonlinear susceptibilities are found to change the sign at a number of characteristic temperatures that depend on the magnitude of the asymmetry, as has been observed earlier for the third-order and fifth-order responses. If the kinetics of the barrier crossing in the ADWP model is described as a two-state model, then we can give analytical expressions for the values of the characteristic temperatures. The results for the response obtained from a (numerical) solution of the Fokker-Planck equation for the Brownian motion in a model ADWP behaves very similarly to the two-state model for high barriers. For small barriers no clear-cut timescale separation between the barrier crossing process and the intrawell relaxation exists and the model exhibits a number of timescales. In this case, the frequency-dependent linear susceptibility at low temperatures is dominated by the fast intrawell transitions and at higher temperatures by the barrier crossing kinetics. We find that for nonlinear susceptibilities the latter process appears to be more important and the intrawell transitions play only a role at the lowest temperatures.

Strong increase of correlations in liquid glycerol observed by nonlinear dielectric techniques

Nonlinear dielectric measurements are an important tool to access material properties and dynamics concealed in their linear counterparts, but the available data are often intermittent and, on occasion, even contradictory. Employing and refining a recently developed technique for high ac field dielectric measurements in the static limit, we ascertain nonlinear effects in glycerol over a wide temperature range from 230 to 320 K. We find that the temperature dependence of the Piekara factor a, which quantifies the saturation effect, changes drastically around 290 K, from ∂a/∂T = +1.4 to -130 in units of 10^-18 V² m^-2 K^-1. These high values of |a| quantify not only elevated dielectric saturation effects but also indicate a temperature driven increase in higher-order orientational correlations and considerable correction terms with respect to the central limit theorem. No signature of this feature can be found in the corresponding low field data.

Amorphous Order and Nonlinear Susceptibilities in Glassy Materials

We review 15 years of theoretical and experimental work on the nonlinear response of glassy systems. We argue that an anomalous growth of the peak value of nonlinear susceptibilities is a signature of growing "amorphous order" in the system, with spin-glasses as a case in point. Experimental results on supercooled liquids are fully compatible with the random first-order transition (RFOT) prediction of compact "glassites" of increasing volume as temperature is decreased, or as the system ages. We clarify why such a behavior is hard to explain within purely kinetic theories of glass formation, despite recent claims to the contrary.

Quantifying dielectric permittivities in the nonlinear regime

In contrast to the static dielectric permittivity,ε, associated with linear response, its high-field counterpart,ε_E, is not a material specific quantity, but rather depends on the experimental method used to determine the nonlinear dielectric effect (NDE). Here, we defineε_Ein a manner consistent with how high field permittivities are typically derived from a capacitance measurement using high voltages. Based upon characterizing the materials nonlinear behavior via its third order susceptibility,χ₃, the relations between a givenχ₃and the observableε_Eis calculated for six different experimental or theoretical approaches to NDEs in the static limit. It is argued that the quantityχ₃is superior overε_Eor the Piekara factor, (ε_E-ε)/E², because it facilitates an unambiguous comparison among different experimental techniques and it provides a more robust connection between experiment and theory.

Modeling non-linear dielectric susceptibilities of supercooled molecular liquids

Advances in high-precision dielectric spectroscopy have enabled access to non-linear susceptibilities of polar molecular liquids. The observed non-monotonic behavior has been claimed to provide strong support for theories of dynamic arrest based on the thermodynamic amorphous order. Here, we approach this question from the perspective of dynamic facilitation, an alternative view focusing on emergent kinetic constraints underlying the dynamic arrest of a liquid approaching its glass transition. We derive explicit expressions for the frequency-dependent higher-order dielectric susceptibilities exhibiting a non-monotonic shape, the height of which increases as temperature is lowered. We demonstrate excellent agreement with the experimental data for glycerol, challenging the idea that non-linear response functions reveal correlated relaxation in supercooled liquids.

Mechanical and dielectric response within and beyond the linear regime

In this work a comparison of dielectric and mechanical data is presented based on experiments within the linear response limit and beyond that limit. The linear dynamic and shear-mechanical response is discussed in terms of the molecular supercooled liquid tetramethyl-tetraphenyl-trisiloxane. As the dynamics measured by the two methods depict the same temperature-dependence, the underlying cause for the observed responses is assumed to be identical for both methods, namely structural relaxation. The comparison of dielectric and mechanical measurements under high excitation amplitudes reveals that this cannot be assumed for the nonlinear response: Mechanical experiments on metallic glasses suggest that involved energies are clearly beyond k _B T, with observed nonlinear effects based on the activation of microstructural plastic rearrangements. In contrast, nonlinear dielectric measurements on another molecular glass-former involve energies clearly below k _B T, so that nonlinear dielectric effects occur due to energy uptake from the electric field or entropy-based changes in the dynamics, but are very unlikely connected to the triggering of plastic rearrangements by the applied electric field.

Acceleration of DNA melting kinetics using alternating electric fields

We verify both theoretically and by simulation that an AC electric field, with a frequency much higher than the dissociation rate, can significantly accelerate the dissociation rate of biological molecules under isothermal conditions. The cumulative effect of the AC field is shown to break a key bottleneck by reducing the entropy (and increasing the free energy of the local minimum) via the alignment of the molecular dipole with the field. For frequencies below a resonant frequency which corresponds to the inverse Debye dipole relaxation time, the dissociation rate can be accelerated by a factor that scales as ω(ϵ'(ω)-1)E02 , where ω is the field frequency, E₀ is the field amplitude, and ϵ'(ω) is the frequency-dependent real permittivity of the molecule. At large amplitudes, we find that the accelerated melting rate becomes universal, independent of duplex size and sequence, which is in drastic contrast to Ohmic thermal melting. We confirm our theory with isothermal all-atomic molecular dynamics simulation of short DNA duplexes with known melting rates, demonstrating several orders in enhancement with realistic fields.

Transient Nonlinear Response of Dynamically Decoupled Ionic Conductors

The present study demonstrates that large electric fields progressively enhance the conductivity of ionic systems up to timescales corresponding to those on which their structural rearrangements take place. Yet, in many ionic materials, some regarded as candidates for electrical energy storage applications, the structural relaxation process can be tremendously slower than (or highly decoupled from) the charge fluctuations. Consequently, nonlinear dielectric spectroscopy may be employed to access rheological information in dynamically decoupled ionic conductors, whereas the combination of large electric power density and good mechanical stability, both technologically highly desired, imposes specific experimental constraints to reliably determine the steady-state conductivity of such materials.

Generalized Langevin equation and fluctuation-dissipation theorem for particle-bath systems in external oscillating fields

The generalized Langevin equation (GLE) can be derived from a particle-bath Hamiltonian, in both classical and quantum dynamics, and provides a route to the (both Markovian and non-Markovian) fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT). All previous studies have focused either on particle-bath systems with time-independent external forces only, or on the simplified case where only the tagged particle is subject to the external time-dependent oscillatory field. Here we extend the GLE and the corresponding FDT for the more general case where both the tagged particle and the bath oscillators respond to an external oscillatory field. This is the example of a charged or polarizable particle immersed in a bath of other particles that are also charged or polarizable, under an external ac electric field. For this Hamiltonian, we find that the ensemble average of the stochastic force is not zero, but proportional to the ac field. The associated FDT reads as 〈F_{P}(t)F_{P}(t^{'})〉=mk_{B}Tν(t-t^{'})+(γe)^{2}E(t)E(t^{'}), where F_{p} is the random force, ν(t-t^{'}) is the friction memory function, and γ is a numerical prefactor.
