The race to the bottom: approaching the ideal glass?

Effect of the presence of pinned particles on the structural parameters of a liquid and correlation between structure and dynamics at the local level

Pinning particles at the equilibrium configuration of the liquid is expected not to affect the structure and any property that depends on the structure while slowing down the dynamics. This leads to a breakdown of the structure dynamics correlation. Here, we calculate two structural quantities: the pair excess entropy, S2, and the mean field caging potential, the inverse of which is our structural order parameter (SOP). We show that when the pinned particles are treated the same way as the mobile particles, both S2 and SOP of the mobile particles remain the same as those of the unpinned system, and the structure dynamics correlation decreases with an increase in pinning density, "c." However, when we treat the pinned particles as a different species, even if we consider that the structure does not change, the expression of S2 and SOP changes. The microscopic expressions show that the interaction between a pinned particle and a mobile particle affects S2 and SOP more than the interaction between two mobile particles. We show that a similar effect is also present in the calculation of the excess entropy and is the primary reason for the well-known vanishing of the configurational entropy at high temperatures. We further show that, contrary to the common belief, the pinning process does change the structure. When these two effects are considered, both S2 and SOP decrease with an increase in "c," and the correlation between the structural parameters and the dynamics continues even for higher values of "c."

Dependence of the Glass Transition and Jamming Densities on Spatial Dimension

We investigate the dynamics of soft sphere liquids through computer simulations for spatial dimensions from d=3 to 8, over a wide range of temperatures and densities. Employing a scaling of density-temperature-dependent relaxation times, we precisely identify the density ϕ_{0}, which marks the ideal glass transition in the hard sphere limit, and a crossover from sub- to super-Arrhenius temperature dependence. The difference between ϕ_{0} and the athermal jamming density ϕ_{J}, small in 3 and 4 dimensions, increases with dimension, with ϕ_{0}>ϕ_{J} for d>4. We compare our results with recent theoretical calculations.

Emerging exotic compositional order on approaching low-temperature equilibrium glasses

The ultimate fate of a glass former upon cooling has been a fundamental problem in condensed matter physics and materials science since Kauzmann. Recently, this problem has been challenged by a model with an extraordinary glass-forming ability effectively free from crystallisation and phase separation, two well-known fates of most glass formers, combined with a particle-size swap method. Thus, this system is expected to approach the ideal glass state if it exists. However, we discover exotic compositional order as the coexistence of space-spanning network-like structures formed by small-large particle connections and patches formed by medium-size particles at low temperatures. Therefore, the glass transition is accompanied unexpectedly by exotic compositional ordering inaccessible through ordinary structural or thermodynamic characterisations. Such exotic compositional ordering is found to have an unusual impact on structural relaxation dynamics. Our study thus raises fundamental questions concerning the role of unconventional structural ordering in understanding glass transition.

Structural Signatures of Ultrastability in a Deposited Glassformer

Glasses obtained from vapor deposition on a cold substrate have superior thermodynamic and kinetic stability with respect to ordinary glasses. Here we perform molecular dynamics simulations of vapor deposition of a model glassformer and investigate the origin of its high stability compared to that of ordinary glasses. We find that the vapor deposited glass is characterized by locally favored structures (LFSs) whose occurrence correlates with its stability, reaching a maximum at the optimal deposition temperature. The formation of LFSs is enhanced near the free surface, hence supporting the idea that the stability of vapor deposited glasses is connected to the relaxation dynamics at the surface.

Probing excitations and cooperatively rearranging regions in deeply supercooled liquids

Upon approaching the glass transition, the relaxation of supercooled liquids is controlled by activated processes, which become dominant at temperatures below the so-called dynamical crossover predicted by Mode Coupling theory (MCT). Two of the main frameworks rationalising this behaviour are dynamic facilitation theory (DF) and the thermodynamic scenario which give equally good descriptions of the available data. Only particle-resolved data from liquids supercooled below the MCT crossover can reveal the microscopic mechanism of relaxation. By employing state-of-the-art GPU simulations and nano-particle resolved colloidal experiments, we identify the elementary units of relaxation in deeply supercooled liquids. Focusing on the excitations of DF and cooperatively rearranging regions (CRRs) implied by the thermodynamic scenario, we find that several predictions of both hold well below the MCT crossover: for the elementary excitations, their density follows a Boltzmann law, and their timescales converge at low temperatures. For CRRs, the decrease in bulk configurational entropy is accompanied by the increase of their fractal dimension. While the timescale of excitations remains microscopic, that of CRRs tracks a timescale associated with dynamic heterogeneity, [Formula: see text]. This timescale separation of excitations and CRRs opens the possibility of accumulation of excitations giving rise to cooperative behaviour leading to CRRs.

Exploring canyons in glassy energy landscapes using metadynamics

The complex physics of glass-forming systems is controlled by the structure of the low-energy portions of their potential energy landscapes. Here we report that a modified metadynamics algorithm efficiently explores and samples low-energy regions of such high-dimensional landscapes. In the energy landscape for a model foam, our algorithm finds and descends meandering canyons in the landscape, which contain dense clusters of energy minima along their floors. Similar canyon structures in the energy landscapes of two model glass formers—hard sphere fluids and the Kob–Andersen glass—allow us to reach high densities and low energies, respectively. In the hard sphere system, fluid configurations are found to form continuous regions that cover the canyon floors up to densities well above the jamming transition. For the Kob–Andersen glass former, our technique samples low-energy states with modest computational effort, with the lowest energies found approaching the predicted Kauzmann limit.

Ultrastable metallic glass by room temperature aging

Glasses have markedly different stability around their glass transition temperature (T_g), and metallic glasses (MGs) are conventionally regarded as metastable compared to other glasses such as silicate glass or amber. Here, we show an aging experiment on a Ce-based MG around its T_g (~0.85T_g) for more than 17 years. We find that the MG with strong fragility could transform into kinetic and thermodynamic hyperstable state after the long-term room temperature aging and exhibits strong resistance against crystallization. The achieved hyperstable state is closer to the ideal glass state compared with that of other MGs and similar to that of the million-year-aged amber, which is attributed to its strong fragility and strong resistance against nucleation. It is also observed through the asymmetrical approaching experiment that the hyperaged Ce-based MG can reach equilibrium liquid state below T_g without crystallization, which supports the idea that nucleation only occurs after the completion of enthalpy relaxation.

Role of Molecular Layering in the Enhanced Mechanical Properties of Stable Glasses

The density, degree of molecular orientation, and molecular layering of vapor-deposited stable glasses (SGs) vary with substrate temperature (T_dep) below the glass-transition temperature (T_g). Density and orientation have been suggested to be factors influencing the mechanical properties of SGs. We perform nanoindentation on two molecules which differ by only a single substituent, allowing one molecule to adopt an in-plane orientation at low T_dep. The reduced elastic modulus and hardness of both molecules show similar T_dep dependences, with enhancements of 15-20% in reduced modulus and 30-45% in hardness at T_dep ≈ 0.8T_g, where the density of vapor-deposited films is enhanced by ∼1.4% compared to that of the liquid-quenched glass. At T_dep < 0.8T_g, one of the molecules produces highly unstable glasses with in-plane orientation. However, both systems show enhanced mechanics. Both the modulus and hardness correlate with the degree of layering, which is similar in both systems despite their variable stability. We suggest that nanoindentation performed normal to the film's surface is influenced by the tighter packing of the molecules in this direction.

Real space analysis of colloidal gels: triumphs, challenges and future directions

Colloidal gels constitute an important class of materials found in many contexts and with a wide range of applications. Yet as matter far from equilibrium, gels exhibit a variety of time-dependent behaviours, which can be perplexing, such as an increase in strength prior to catastrophic failure. Remarkably, such complex phenomena are faithfully captured by an extremely simple model-'sticky spheres'. Here we review progress in our understanding of colloidal gels made through the use of real space analysis and particle resolved studies. We consider the challenges of obtaining a suitable experimental system where the refractive index and density of the colloidal particles is matched to that of the solvent. We review work to obtain a particle-level mechanism for rigidity in gels and the evolution of our understanding of time-dependent behaviour, from early-time aggregation to ageing, before considering the response of colloidal gels to deformation and then move on to more complex systems of anisotropic particles and mixtures. Finally we note some more exotic materials with similar properties.

Modeling non-linear dielectric susceptibilities of supercooled molecular liquids

Advances in high-precision dielectric spectroscopy have enabled access to non-linear susceptibilities of polar molecular liquids. The observed non-monotonic behavior has been claimed to provide strong support for theories of dynamic arrest based on the thermodynamic amorphous order. Here, we approach this question from the perspective of dynamic facilitation, an alternative view focusing on emergent kinetic constraints underlying the dynamic arrest of a liquid approaching its glass transition. We derive explicit expressions for the frequency-dependent higher-order dielectric susceptibilities exhibiting a non-monotonic shape, the height of which increases as temperature is lowered. We demonstrate excellent agreement with the experimental data for glycerol, challenging the idea that non-linear response functions reveal correlated relaxation in supercooled liquids.

Waiting-time dependent non-equilibrium phase diagram of simple glass- and gel-forming liquids

Under numerous circumstances, many soft and hard materials are present in a puzzling wealth of non-equilibrium amorphous states, whose properties are not stationary and depend on preparation. They are often summarized in unconventional "phase diagrams" that exhibit new "phases" and/or "transitions" in which time, however, is an essential variable. This work proposes a solution to the problem of theoretically defining and predicting these non-equilibrium phases and their time-evolving phase diagrams, given the underlying molecular interactions. We demonstrate that these non-equilibrium phases and the corresponding non-stationary (i.e., aging) phase diagrams can indeed be defined and predicted using the kinetic perspective of a novel non-equilibrium statistical mechanical theory of irreversible processes. This is illustrated with the theoretical description of the transient process of dynamic arrest into non-equilibrium amorphous solid phases of an instantaneously quenched simple model fluid involving repulsive hard-sphere plus attractive square well pair interactions.

Physical Aging Behavior of a Glassy Polyether

The present work aims to provide insights on recent findings indicating the presence of multiple equilibration mechanisms in physical aging of glasses. To this aim, we have investigated a glass forming polyether, poly(1-4 cyclohexane di-methanol) (PCDM), by following the evolution of the enthalpic state during physical aging by fast scanning calorimetry (FSC). The main results of our study indicate that physical aging persists at temperatures way below the glass transition temperature and, in a narrow temperature range, is characterized by a two steps evolution of the enthalpic state. Altogether, our results indicate that the simple old-standing view of physical aging as triggered by the α relaxation does not hold true when aging is carried out deep in the glassy state.

Reaching the Ideal Glass in Polymer Spheres: Thermodynamics and Vibrational Density of States

The existence of an ideal glass and the resolution to the Kauzmann paradox is a long-standing open question in materials science. To address this problem, we exploit the ability of glasses with large interfacial area to access low energy states. We submit aggregates of spheres of a polymeric glass former to aging well below their glass transition temperature, T_{g}; and characterize their thermodynamic state by calorimetry, and the vibrational density of state (VDOS) by inelastic neutron scattering (INS). We show that, when aged at appropriate temperatures, glassy spheres attain a thermodynamic state corresponding to an ideal glass in time scales of about one day. In this state, the boson peak, underlying the deviation from the Debye level of the VDOS, is essentially suppressed. Our results are discussed in the framework of the link between the macroscopic thermodynamic state of glasses and their vibrational properties.

Dynamical phase transitions and their relation to structural and thermodynamic aspects of glass physics

We review recent developments in structural-dynamical phase transitions in trajectory space based on dynamic facilitation theory. An open question is how the dynamic facilitation perspective on the glass transition may be reconciled with thermodynamic theories that posit collective reorganization accompanied by a growing static length scale and, eventually, a vanishing configurational entropy. In contrast, dynamic facilitation theory invokes a dynamical phase transition between an active phase (close to the normal liquid) and an inactive phase, which is glassy and whose order parameter is either a time-averaged dynamic or structural quantity. In particular, the dynamical phase transition in systems with non-trivial thermodynamics manifests signatures of a lower critical point that lies between the mode-coupling crossover and the putative Kauzmann temperature, at which a thermodynamic phase transition to an ideal glass state would occur. We review these findings and discuss such criticality in the context of the low-temperature decrease in configurational entropy predicted by thermodynamic theories of the glass transition.

Ultrastable Metallic Glasses In Silico

We develop a generic strategy and simple numerical models for multicomponent metallic glasses for which the swap Monte Carlo algorithm can produce highly stable equilibrium configurations equivalent to experimental systems cooled more than 10^{7} times slower than in conventional simulations. This paves the way for a deeper understanding of the thermodynamic, dynamic, and mechanical properties of metallic glasses. As first applications, we considerably extend configurational entropy measurements down to the experimental glass temperature, and demonstrate a qualitative change of the mechanical response of metallic glasses of increasing stability toward brittleness.

How to "measure" a structural relaxation time that is too long to be measured?

It has recently become possible to prepare ultrastable glassy materials characterized by structural relaxation times, which vastly exceed the duration of any feasible experiment. Similarly, new algorithms have led to the production of ultrastable computer glasses. Is it possible to obtain a reliable estimate of a structural relaxation time that is too long to be measured? We review, organize, and critically discuss various methods to estimate very long relaxation times. We also perform computer simulations of three dimensional ultrastable hard spheres glasses to test and quantitatively compare some of these methods for a single model system. The various estimation methods disagree significantly, and non-linear and non-equilibrium methods lead to a strong underestimate of the actual relaxation time. It is not yet clear how to accurately estimate extremely long relaxation times.

Possible instability of one-step replica symmetry breaking in p-spin Ising models outside mean-field theory

The fully connected Ising p-spin model has for p>2 a discontinuous phase transition from the paramagnetic phase to a stable state with one-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB). However, simulations in three dimension do not look like these mean-field results and have features more like those which would arise with full replica symmetry breaking (FRSB). To help understand how this might come about we have studied in the fully connected p-spin model the state of two-step replica symmetry breaking (2RSB). It has a free energy degenerate with that of 1RSB, but the weight of the additional peak in P(q) vanishes. We expect that the state with full replica symmetry breaking (FRSB) is also degenerate with that of 1RSB. We suggest that finite-size effects will give a nonvanishing weight to the FRSB features, as also will fluctuations about the mean-field solution. Our conclusion is that outside the fully connected model in the thermodynamic limit, FRSB is to be expected rather than 1RSB.

Active glasses

Active glassy matter has recently emerged as a novel class of non-equilibrium soft matter, combining energy-driven, active particle movement with dense and disordered glass-like behavior. Here we review the state-of-the-art in this field from an experimental, numerical, and theoretical perspective. We consider both non-living and living active glassy systems, and discuss how several hallmarks of glassy dynamics (dynamical slowdown, fragility, dynamical heterogeneity, violation of the Stokes-Einstein relation, and aging) are manifested in such materials. We start by reviewing the recent experimental evidence in this area of research, followed by an overview of the main numerical simulation studies and physical theories of active glassy matter. We conclude by outlining several open questions and possible directions for future work.

Interference between the glass, gel, and gas-liquid transitions

Recent experiments and computer simulations have revealed intriguing phenomenological fingerprints of the interference between the ordinary equilibrium gas-liquid phase transition and the non-equilibrium glass and gel transitions. We thus now know, for example, that the liquid-gas spinodal line and the glass transition loci intersect at a finite temperature and density, that when the gel and the glass transitions meet, mechanisms for multistep relaxation emerge, and that the formation of gels exhibits puzzling latency effects. In this work we demonstrate that the kinetic perspective of the non-equilibrium self-consistent generalized Langevin equation (NE-SCGLE) theory of irreversible processes in liquids provides a unifying first-principles microscopic theoretical framework to describe these and other phenomena associated with spinodal decomposition, gelation, glass transition, and their combinations. The resulting scenario is in reality the competition between two kinetically limiting behaviors, associated with the two distinct dynamic arrest transitions in which the liquid-glass line is predicted to bifurcate at low densities, below its intersection with the spinodal line.

Activation volume in superpressed glass-formers

In pressurized glass-forming systems, the apparent (changeable) activation volume Va(P) is the key property governing the previtreous behavior of the structural relaxation time (τ) or viscosity (η), following the Super-Barus behavior: [Formula: see text], T = const. It is usually assumed that Va(P) = V#(P), where [Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text]. This report shows that Va(P) ≪ V#(P) for P → Pg, where Pg denotes the glass pressure, and the magnitude V#(P) is coupled to the pressure steepness index (the apparent fragility). V#(P) and Va(P) coincides only for the basic Barus dynamics, where Va(P) = Va = const in the given pressure domain, or for P → 0. The simple and non-biased way of determining Va(P) and the relation for its parameterization are proposed. The derived relation resembles Murnaghan - O'Connel equation, applied in deep Earth studies. It also offers a possibility of estimating the pressure and volume at the absolute stability limit. The application of the methodology is shown for diisobutyl phthalate (DIIP, low-molecular-weight liquid), isooctyloxycyanobiphenyl (8*OCB, liquid crystal) and bisphenol A/epichlorohydrin (EPON 828, epoxy resin), respectively.

Universal behavior of the apparent fragility in ultraslow glass forming systems

Despite decades of studies on the grand problem of the glass transition the question of well-defined universal patterns, including the key problem of the previtreous behavior of the primary (structural) relaxation time, remains elusive. This report shows the universal previtreous behavior of the apparent fragility, i.e. the steepness index mP (T > Tg) = d log10τ(T)/d( Tg/T). It is evidenced that mP(T) = 1(T - T*), for T → Tg and  T*= Tg - Δ T*. Basing on this finding, the new 3-parameter dependence for portraying the previtreous behavior of the primary relaxation time has been derived: τ(T) = CΩ((T - T*)/T)-Ω × [exp((T - T*)/T)]Ω. The universality of obtained relations is evidenced for glass formers belonging to low molecular weight liquids, polymers (melt and solid), plastic crystals, liquid crystals, resins and relaxors. They exhibit clear preferences either for the VFT or for the critical-like descriptions, if recalled already used modeling. The novel relation can obey even above the dynamic crossover temperature, with the power exponent Ω ranging between ~17 (liquid crystals) to ~57 (glycerol), what may indicate the impact of symmetry on the previtreous effect. Finally, the emerging similarity to the behavior in the isotropic phase of nematic liquid crystals is recalled.

Configurational entropy of glass-forming liquids

The configurational entropy is one of the most important thermodynamic quantities characterizing supercooled liquids approaching the glass transition. Despite decades of experimental, theoretical, and computational investigation, a widely accepted definition of the configurational entropy is missing, its quantitative characterization remains fraught with difficulties, misconceptions, and paradoxes, and its physical relevance is vividly debated. Motivated by recent computational progress, we offer a pedagogical perspective on the configurational entropy in glass-forming liquids. We first explain why the configurational entropy has become a key quantity to describe glassy materials, from early empirical observations to modern theoretical treatments. We explain why practical measurements necessarily require approximations that make its physical interpretation delicate. We then demonstrate that computer simulations have become an invaluable tool to obtain precise, nonambiguous, and experimentally relevant measurements of the configurational entropy. We describe a panel of available computational tools, offering for each method a critical discussion. This perspective should be useful to both experimentalists and theoreticians interested in glassy materials and complex systems.

Bypassing sluggishness: SWAP algorithm and glassiness in high dimensions

The recent implementation of a swap Monte Carlo algorithm (SWAP) for polydisperse glass forming mixtures bypasses computational sluggishness and closes the gap between experimental and simulation timescales in physical dimensions d=2 and 3. Here, we consider suitably optimized systems in d=2,3,⋯,8 to obtain insights into the performance and underlying physics of SWAP. We show that the speedup obtained decays rapidly with increasing the dimension. SWAP nonetheless delays systematically the onset of the activated dynamics by an amount that remains seemingly finite in the limit d→∞. This shows that the glassy dynamics in high dimensions d>3 is now computationally accessible using SWAP, thus opening the door for the systematic consideration of finite-dimensional deviations from the mean-field description.

Thermodynamic Ultrastability of a Polymer Glass Confined at the Micrometer Length Scale

We employ fast scanning calorimetry to assess the thermodynamic state attained after a given cooling rate and the molecular mobility of glassy poly(4-tert-butylstyrene) confined at the micrometer length scale. We show that, for such a large confinement length scale, thermodynamic states with a fictive temperature (T_{f}) 80 K below the polymer glass transition temperature (T_{g}) are attained, which allows to bypass the geological timescales required for bulk glasses. Access to such states is promoted by a fast mechanism of equilibration. Importantly, the tremendous T_{f} decrease takes place while the molecular mobility remains bulklike, indicating marked decoupling between vitrification kinetics and molecular mobility.
