Size-Dependent Superconducting Properties of In Nanowire Arrays

Arrays of superconducting nanowires may be useful as elements of novel nanoelectronic devices. The superconducting properties of nanowires differ significantly from the properties of bulk structures. For instance, different vortex configurations of the magnetic field have previously been predicted for nanowires with different diameters. In the present study, arrays of parallel superconducting In nanowires with the diameters of 45 nm, 200 nm, and 550 nm-the same order of magnitude as coherence length ξ-were fabricated by templated electrodeposition. Values of magnetic moment M of the samples were measured as a function of magnetic field H and temperature T in axial and transverse fields. M(H) curves for the arrays of nanowires with 45 nm and 200 nm diameters are reversible, whereas magnetization curves for the array of nanowires with 550 nm diameter have several feature points and show a significant difference between increasing and decreasing field branches. Critical fields increase with a decrease in diameter, and the thinnest nanowires exceed bulk critical fields by 20 times. The qualitative change indicates that magnetic field configurations are different in the nanowires with different diameters. Variation of M(H) slope in small fields, heat capacity, and the magnetic field penetration depth with the temperature were measured. Superconductivity in In nanowires is proven to exist above the bulk critical temperature.

A Mini Review on Thin Film Superconductors

Thin superconducting films have been a significant part of superconductivity research for more than six decades. They have had a significant impact on the existing consensus on the microscopic and macroscopic nature of the superconducting state. Thin-film superconductors have properties that are very different and superior to bulk material. Amongst the various classification criteria, thin-film superconductors can be classified into Fe based thin-film superconductors, layered titanium compound thin-film superconductors, intercalation compounds of layered and cage-like structures, and other thin-film superconductors that do not fall into these groups. There are various techniques of manufacturing thin films, which include atomic layer deposition (ALD), chemical vapour deposition (CVD), physical vapour deposition (PVD), molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), sputtering, electron beam evaporation, laser ablation, cathodic arc, and pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Thin film technology offers a lucrative scheme of creating engineered surfaces and opens a wide exploration of prospects to modify material properties for specific applications, such as those that depend on surfaces. This review paper reports on the different types and groups of superconductors, fabrication of thin-film superconductors by MBE, PLD, and ALD, their applications, and various challenges faced by superconductor technologies. Amongst all the thin film manufacturing techniques, more focus is put on the fabrication of thin film superconductors by atomic layer deposition because of the growing popularity the process has gained in the past decade.

Vortex Interactions and Clustering in Thin Superconductors

Cluster formation is a focus of interdisciplinary research in both chemistry and physics. Here we discuss the exotic example of this phenomenon in the vortex matter of a thin superconductor. In superconducting films, the clustering takes place because of particular properties of the vortex interactions in the crossover or intertype regime between superconductivity types I and II. These interactions are controlled by the two parameters that are responsible for the crossover, Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ, which specifies the superconducting material of the film, and film thickness d, which controls effects due to stray magnetic fields outside the sample. We demonstrate that their competition gives rise to a complex spatial dependence of the interaction potential between vortices, favoring the formation of chainlike vortex clusters.

Controlling soft vortex matter: edge effects on vortex configurations and partial vortices in a superconducting type-II/type-I bilayer

We demonstrate that the presence of edges in a superconducting film made of a type-I/type-II bilayer stabilizes type-II/type-I hybrid (inter-type) flux patterns, as vortex clusters, chains, and gel phase. These patterns are very sensitive to primary parameters such as applied magnetic field, layer coupling, and temperature. Thus, the magnetization versus temperature curves, M(T), for many values of coupling were used to estimate the strength of the layer couplings, and also as a guide for obtaining sequentially the flux patterns. We also show that the effect of the borders on the unrestricted states is to shift them to states of higher density, since they introduce extra compression on the vortex matter. For a low layer coupling regime, we observe an unusual magnetic response where few partial vortices (partial in a sense they miss the contribution of the type I part), repelling each other and bounded to the surfaces, populate one layer leaving the other empty. We expect that the predicted flux configurations can stimulate experimentalists in trying to observe them by direct imaging techniques.
