Effect of strain and doping on the polar metal phase in LiOsO3

Superconductivity from energy fluctuations in dilute quantum critical polar metals

Superconductivity in low carrier density metals challenges the conventional electron-phonon theory due to the absence of retardation required to overcome Coulomb repulsion. Here we demonstrate that pairing mediated by energy fluctuations, ubiquitously present close to continuous phase transitions, occurs in dilute quantum critical polar metals and results in a dome-like dependence of the superconducting T_c on carrier density, characteristic of non-BCS superconductors. In quantum critical polar metals, the Coulomb repulsion is heavily screened, while the critical transverse optical phonons decouple from the electron charge. In the resulting vacuum, long-range attractive interactions emerge from the energy fluctuations of the critical phonons, resembling the gravitational interactions of a chargeless dark matter universe. Our estimates show that this mechanism may explain the critical temperatures observed in doped SrTiO₃. We provide predictions for the enhancement of superconductivity near polar quantum criticality in two- and three-dimensional materials that can be used to test our theory.

Free-Carrier-Induced Ferroelectricity in Layered Perovskites

Doping ferroelectrics with carriers is often detrimental to polarization. This makes the design and discovery of metals that undergo a ferroelectriclike transition challenging. In this Letter, we show from first principles that the oxygen octahedral rotations in perovskites are often enhanced by electron doping, and this can be used as a means to strengthen the structural polarization in certain hybrid-improper ferroelectrics-compounds in which the polarization is not stabilized by the long-range Coulomb interactions but is instead induced by a trilinear coupling to octahedral rotations. We use this design strategy to predict a cation ordered Ruddlesden-Popper compound that can be driven into a metallic ferroelectriclike phase via electrolyte gating.

Reactive molecular dynamics simulation of thermal decomposition for nitromethane/nano-aluminum composites

The thermal decomposition of pure nitromethane (NM) and NM/nano-aluminum (Al) composites was simulated by reactive molecular dynamics with ReaxFF-lg corrected force field parameters. The initial decomposition pathway of NM molecules in pure NM is C-N bond rupture. However, NM is decomposed early by the initial pathway of N-O bond rupture when it mixes with nano-Al because of the strong attraction of Al to O. The decomposition process of NM/nano-Al can be divided into three stages: adsorption, slow decomposition, and rapid decomposition. The addition of nano-Al particles decreases the energy barrier in decomposition, increases the released energy, and reduces the decomposition temperature of NM. Adding 3% Al to the explosive can make the detonation pressure 3.083% higher than that of pure system. Compared with pure NM, the energy barrier of 16% Al composite is 25.63 kcal/mol lower and the energy released is 22.99 kcal/mol more. There is an optimal amount of Al contents being added to the NM composite by which the largest total numbers of gaseous products (N₂, H₂O, and CO₂) are released. The effect of Al additives on CO₂ production is the most obvious. The maximum detonation pressure can be achieved by adding an appropriate amount of nano-Al, which is similar to the experimental results. Graphical abstract.

Multiband Quantum Criticality of Polar Metals

Motivated by recent experimental realizations of polar metals with broken inversion symmetry, we explore the emergence of strong correlations driven by criticality when the polar transition temperature is tuned to zero. Overcoming previously discussed challenges, we demonstrate a robust mechanism for coupling between the critical mode and electrons in multiband metals. We identify and characterize several novel interacting phases, including non-Fermi liquids, when band crossings are close to the Fermi level and present their experimental signatures for three generic types of band crossings.
