Alkylthiol self-assembled monolayers on Au(111) with tailored tail groups for attaching gold nanoparticles

How far the chemistry of self-assembled monolayers on gold surfaces affects their work function?

Self-assembled monolayers composed of various long-chain aliphatic molecules and different tail functional groups have been synthesized on the Au(111) surface and characterized by Kelvin probe force microscopy and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. Carboxy, amino, thio and methyl terminal groups have been considered in the design of self-assembled monolayers with different aliphatic chain lengths (from C6 to C16). Work function measurements by Kelvin probe force microscopy have been carried out under a controlled and room atmosphere. Remarkably, a reduction of the relative humidity from 40% to 3% has induced a work function shift of up to 0.3 eV. As expected, the changes of the chain length of the aliphatic moiety and of the tail group have a significant impact on the tuning of the measured work function (3.90 eV for dodecanethiol versus 4.57 eV for mercaptohexadecylamine). Surprisingly, the change of the net dipole moment of the tail group (sign and amplitude) does not dominate the work function variations. In contrast, the change of the chain length and the possibility of the tail group to form a complex hydrogen bond network between molecules lead to significant modulations of the work function. In order to interpret these original findings, density functional theory models of equivalent self-assembled monolayers adsorbed on the Au(111) surface have been developed at an unprecedented level of description with large supercells including simultaneously 27 co-adsorbed molecules and weak van der Waals interactions between them. Such large systems have allowed the theoretical modeling of complex hydrogen bond networks between molecules when possible (carboxy tail group). The comparison between computed and measured work functions shows a striking agreement, thus allowing the disentanglement of the previously mentioned competing effects. This consistency between experiment and theory will help in designing the electronic properties of self-assembled monolayers in the context of molecular electronics and organic transistors.

Ultrafast Coherent Delocalization Revealed in Multilayer QDs under a Chiral Potential

In recent years, it was found that current passing through chiral molecules exhibits spin preference, an effect known as Chiral Induced Spin Selectivity (CISS). The effect also enables the reduction of scattering and therefore enhances delocalization. As a result, the delocalization of an exciton generated in the dots is not symmetric and relates to the electronic and hole excited spins. In this work utilizing fast spectroscopy on hybrid multilayered QDs with a chiral polypeptide linker system, we probed the interdot chiral coupling on a short time scale. Surprisingly, we found strong coherent coupling and delocalization despite having long 4-nm chiral linkers. We ascribe the results to asymmetric delocalization that is controlled by the electron spin. The effect is not measured when using shorter nonchiral linkers. As the system mimics light-harvesting antennas, the results may shed light on a mechanism of fast and efficient energy transfer in these systems.

Streamlined Fabrication of Hybrid Lipid Bilayer Membranes on Titanium Oxide Surfaces: A Comparison of One- and Two-Tail SAM Molecules

There is broad interest in fabricating cell-membrane-mimicking, hybrid lipid bilayer (HLB) coatings on titanium oxide surfaces for medical implant and drug delivery applications. However, existing fabrication strategies are complex, and there is an outstanding need to develop a streamlined method that can be performed quickly at room temperature. Towards this goal, herein, we characterized the room-temperature deposition kinetics and adlayer properties of one- and two-tail phosphonic acid-functionalized molecules on titanium oxide surfaces in various solvent systems and identified optimal conditions to prepare self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), upon which HLBs could be formed in select cases. Among the molecular candidates, we identified a two-tail molecule that formed a rigidly attached SAM to enable HLB fabrication via vesicle fusion for membrane-based biosensing applications. By contrast, vesicles adsorbed but did not rupture on SAMs composed of one-tail molecules. Our findings support that two-tail phosphonic acid SAMs offer superior capabilities for rapid HLB coating fabrication at room temperature, and these streamlined capabilities could be useful to prepare durable lipid bilayer coatings on titanium-based materials.

Ligand Dynamics in Nanocrystal Solids Studied with Quasi-Elastic Neutron Scattering

Nanocrystal surfaces are commonly populated by organic ligands, which play a determining role in the optical, electronic, thermal, and catalytic properties of the individual nanocrystals and their assemblies. Understanding the bonding of ligands to nanocrystal surfaces and their dynamics is therefore important for the optimization of nanocrystals for different applications. In this study, we use temperature-dependent, quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) to investigate the dynamics of different surface bound alkanethiols in lead sulfide nanocrystal solids. We select alkanethiols with mono- and dithiol terminations, as well as different backbone types and lengths. QENS spectra are collected both on a time-of-flight spectrometer and on a backscattering spectrometer, allowing us to investigate ligand dynamics in a time range from a few picoseconds to nanoseconds. Through model-based analysis of the QENS data, we find that ligands can either (1) precess around a central axis, while simultaneously rotating around their own molecular axis, or (2) only undergo uniaxial rotation with no precession. We establish the percentage of ligands undergoing each type of motion, the average relaxation times, and activation energies for these motions. We determine, for example, that dithiols which link facets of neighboring nanocrystals only exhibit uniaxial rotation and that longer ligands have higher activation energies and show smaller opening angles of precession due to stronger ligand-ligand interactions. Generally, this work provides insight into the arrangement and dynamics of ligands in nanocrystal solids, which is key to understanding their mechanical and thermal properties, and, more generally, highlights the potential of QENS for studying ligand behavior.

Effect of Concentration, Chain Length, Hydrophobicity, and an External Electric Field on the Growth of Mixed Alkanethiol Self-Assembled Monolayers: A Molecular Dynamics Study

Growing functionalized self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with fewer defects and lower cost is the focus of ongoing investigations. In the present study, molecular dynamics simulations were performed to investigate the process of SAM formation on a gold substrate from mixed alkanethiolates in ethanol solution. Using the mixed-SAM system of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) with either 1-decanethiol (C9CH3) or 6-mercaptohexanol (C6OH) in a 3:7 ratio as the standard SAM model, we systematically investigated the effects of the concentration, chain length, functional group, and an external electric field on SAM growth. The results showed that the initial growth rate and surface coverage of the SAM are dependent on the ligand concentration. At a certain high concentration (about 1.2-1.5 times the minimum concentration), the final surface coverage is optimal. Reducing the chain length and increasing the proportion of hydrophobic diluting molecules are effective ways to improve the surface coverage, but the compositional ligands have to be changed, which may not be desirable for the functional requirements of SAMs. Furthermore, by investigating the behavior of the alkanethiolates and ethanol solvent under an applied external field, we find that a strong electric field with a proper field direction can facilitate the generation of defect-free monolayers. These findings will contribute to the understanding of mixed-SAM formation and provide insight into experimental design for efficient and effective SAM formation.

Effect of Synthesis Conditions of Nitrogen and Platinum Co-Doped Titania Films on the Photocatalytic Performance under Simulated Solar Light

Platinum and nitrogen co-doped titania films of different surface morphologies obtained via a sol-gel process have been tested for tetracycline hydrochloride photocatalytic decomposition under simulated solar light. Titania crystallization to anatase is shown by XRD for all films. A shift of the bandgap edge toward the visible region in absorption spectra and, consequently, a narrowing of the bandgap is observed for some films doped with nitrogen and/or exposed to UV pretreatment. The surface peculiarities of the samples are presented by an SEM and TEM investigation. The surface saturation by Pt and N with a homogeneous distribution of Pt ions on the surface as well as bulk as established by XPS and EDS data can be achieved with a certain synthesis procedure. The influence of the platinum content and of the pretreatment procedure on the state and atomic surface concentration of incorporated nitrogen and platinum is studied by XPS analysis: substitutional and interstitial nitrogen, non-metal containing fragments, Pt0, Pt2+ and Pt4+ ions. The photocatalytic activity of the films is ruled by the presence of Pt2+ ions and N rather than Pt0. The formation of the polycrystalline titania structure and Pt0 nanoparticles (NPs) is confirmed by TEM and electron diffraction images. The mechanism of primary photocatalytic processes is proposed.

Combining high-resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy and first-principles simulations to identify halogen bonding

Scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) is commonly used to identify on-surface molecular self-assembled structures. However, its limited ability to reveal only the overall shape of molecules and their relative positions is not always enough to fully solve a supramolecular structure. Here, we analyse the assembly of a brominated polycyclic aromatic molecule on Au(111) and demonstrate that standard STM measurements cannot conclusively establish the nature of the intermolecular interactions. By performing high-resolution STM with a CO-functionalised tip, we clearly identify the location of rings and halogen atoms, determining that halogen bonding governs the assemblies. This is supported by density functional theory calculations that predict a stronger interaction energy for halogen rather than hydrogen bonding and by an electron density topology analysis that identifies characteristic features of halogen bonding. A similar approach should be able to solve many complex 2D supramolecular structures, and we predict its increasing use in molecular nanoscience at surfaces.

Gold Nanoparticle Self-Aggregation on Surface with 1,6-Hexanedithiol Functionalization

Here we study the morphology and the optical properties of assemblies made of small (17 nm) gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) directly on silicon wafers coated with (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTES). We employed aliphatic 1,6-hexanedithiol (HDT) molecules to cross-link AuNPs during a two-stage precipitation procedure. The first immersion of the wafer in AuNP colloidal solution led mainly to the attachment of single particles with few inclusions of dimers and small aggregates. After the functionalization of precipitated NPs with HDT and after the second immersion in the colloidal solution of AuNP, we detected a sharp rise in the number of aggregates compared to single AuNPs and their dimers. The lateral size of the aggregates was about 100 nm, while some of them were larger than 1μm. We propose that the uncompensated dipole moment of the small aggregates appeared after the first precipitation and acts further as the driving force accelerating their further growth on the surface during the second precipitation. By having such inhomogeneous surface coating, the X-ray reciprocal space maps and modulation polarimetry showed well-distinguished signals from the single AuNPs and their dimers. From these observations, we concluded that the contribution from aggregated AuNPs does not hamper the detection and investigation of plasmonic effects for AuNP dimers. Meantime, using unpolarized and polarized light spectroscopy, the difference in the optical signals between the dimers, being formed because of self-aggregation and the one being cross-linked by means of HDT, was not detected.

Selective Nanomechanics of Aromatic versus Aliphatic Thiolates on Gold Surfaces

Thiolated gold nanointerfaces play a key role in numerous fields of science, technology, as well as modern medicine to coat, functionalize, and protect. Our computational study reveals that the mechanical vs thermal stabilities of aliphatic thiolates on gold surfaces are strikingly different from those of aromatic thiolates. The aliphatic thiolates feature, at the same time, a higher thermal desorption energy but a lower mechanical rupture force than thiophenolates. Our analysis discloses that this most counterintuitive property is due to different mechanochemical detachment mechanisms. Electronic structure analyses along the detachment pathways trace this back to the distinct electronic properties of the S─Au bond in stretched nanojunctions. The discoveries that it is a higher thermal stability that entails a lower mechanical stability and that mechanical loads generate different local nanostructures depending on the nature of the thiolate are highly relevant for the rational design of improved thiol-gold nanocontacts.
