Element doping: a marvelous strategy for pioneering the smart applications of VO2

Smart materials are leading the future of materials by virtue of their autonomous response behavior to external stimuli; it is widely believed their development and application will bring a new revolution. Among them, vanadium dioxide (VO₂) is a special one showing a unique multi-stimulus responsive metal-insulator transition (MIT) accompanied by a structural phase transition (SPT) with striking changes of physical properties including optical, electrical and thermal properties, etc., making it ideal for smart windows, micro-bolometers, actuators, etc. Since the attractive performances of VO₂ are rooted in MIT behavior (coupled with SPT), element doping becomes a powerful tool in tailoring VO₂ performance. Oriented on the practical requirements, element-doped VO₂ is more promising and competitive in terms of performance, prospect, and cost. Here we focus specifically on element-doped VO₂, the recent progress and potential challenges of which are discussed. We devote attention to the crucial roles of element doping in modulating the properties and driving the practicality of VO₂, aiming to inspire current research to pioneer new applications of VO₂.

Atomically precise vanadium-oxide clusters

Polyoxovanadate (POV) clusters are an important subclass of polyoxometalates with a broad range of molecular compositions and physicochemical properties. One relatively underdeveloped application of these polynuclear assemblies involves their use as atomically precise, homogenous molecular models for bulk metal oxides. Given the structural and electronic similarities of POVs and extended vanadium oxide materials, as well as the relative ease of modifying the homogenous congeners, investigation of the chemical and physical properties of pristine and modified cluster complexes presents a method toward understanding the influence of structural modifications (e.g. crystal structure/phase, chemical makeup of surface ligands, elemental dopants) on the properties of extended solids. This review summarises recent advances in the use of POV clusters as atomically precise models for bulk metal oxides, with particular focus on the assembly of vanadium oxide clusters and the consequences of altering the molecular composition of the assembly via organofunctionalization and the incorporation of elemental "dopants".

Data of XPS in incorporating the platinum complexes dopant on the surface of Ag3PO4 photocatalyst

These data inform about the XPS profile of Ag4d, P2p, and O1s from the samples of Ag₃PO₄, defect-Ag₃PO₄, Ag₃PO₄/PtCl₆²⁻ and defect-Ag₃PO₄/PtCl₆²⁻ which were denoted as AP, DAP, AP/Pt, and DAP/Pt, respectively. These samples were made by co-precipitation method using the starting material of silver nitrate (AgNO₃), disodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate (Na₂HPO₄.12H₂O), and hexachloroplatinic acid hexahydrate (H₂PtCl₆.6H₂O) for platinum complexes dopant. The water solution and mixed water-ethanol solution for dissolving the AgNO₃ were used for free-defect and defect samples, respectively. The Ag4d, P2p, and O1s of these samples were investigated using the XPS. The deconvolutions of O1s peak were analyzed using the software of XPSPEAK Version 4.1. The modification of Ag₃PO₄ by defect and platinum complexes dopant had changed the curve profile of Ag4d, P2p and O1s. Two types of oxygen of O-1 and O-2 were observed in O1s spectrum. The ratios of O-2/O-1 with the value of 0.25, 0.32, 0.49 and 0.51 were found in the sample of AP, DAP, AP/Pt, and DAP/Pt, respectively.
