Minimum Free-Energy Shapes of Ag Nanocrystals: Vacuum vs Solution

We use two variants of replica-exchange molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, parallel tempering MD and partial replica exchange MD, to probe the minimum free-energy shapes of Ag nanocrystals containing 100-200 atoms in a vacuum, ethylene glycol (EG) solvent, and EG solvent with a PVP polymer containing 100 repeat units. Our simulations reveal a shape intermediate between a Dh and an Ih, a Dh-Ih, that has distinct structural signatures and magic sizes. We find several prominent features associated with entropy: pure FCC nanocrystals are less common than FCC crystals containing stacking faults, and crystals with the minimum potential energy are not always preferred over the range of relevant temperatures. The shapes of the nanocrystals in solution are influenced by the chemical identities of the solution-phase molecules. Comparing Ag nanocrystal shapes in EG to those in an EG+PVP solution, we find more icosahedra in EG and more decahedra in EG+PVP across all of the nanocrystal sizes probed in this study. At certain critical sizes, nanocrystal shapes can change dramatically with the addition and removal of a single atom or with a change in temperature at a fixed size. The information in our study could be useful in efforts to devise processing routes to achieve selective nanocrystal shapes.

Theory of Anisotropic Metal Nanostructures

A significant challenge in the development of functional materials is understanding the growth and transformations of anisotropic colloidal metal nanocrystals. Theory and simulations can aid in the development and understanding of anisotropic nanocrystal syntheses. The focus of this review is on how results from first-principles calculations and classical techniques, such as Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations, have been integrated into multiscale theoretical predictions useful in understanding shape-selective nanocrystal syntheses. Also, examples are discussed in which machine learning has been useful in this field. There are many areas at the frontier in condensed matter theory and simulation that are or could be beneficial in this area and these prospects for future progress are discussed.

Self-assembly, alignment, and patterning of metal nanowires

Armed with the merits of one-dimensional nanostructures (flexibility, high aspect ratio, and anisotropy) and metals (high conductivity, plasmonic properties, and catalytic activity), metal nanowires (MNWs) have stood out as a new class of nanomaterials in the last two decades. They are envisaged to expedite significantly and even revolutionize a broad spectrum of applications related to display, sensing, energy, plasmonics, photonics, and catalysis. Compared with disordered MNWs, well-organized MNWs would not only enhance the intrinsic physical and chemical properties, but also create new functions and sophisticated architectures of optoelectronic devices. This paper presents a comprehensive review of assembly strategies of MNWs, including self-assembly for specific structures, alignment for anisotropic constructions, and patterning for precise configurations. The technical processes, underlying mechanisms, performance indicators, and representative applications of these strategies are described and discussed to inspire further innovation in assembly techniques and guide the fabrication of optoelectrical devices. Finally, a perspective on the critical challenges and future opportunities of MNW assembly is provided.

Scalable Fabrication of Scratch-Proof Transparent Al/F-SnO2 Hybrid Electrodes with Unusual Thermal and Environmental Stability

Fabrication protocols of transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs), including those which produce TCEs of high values of figure of merit, often fail to address issues of scalability, stability, and cost. When it comes to working with high-temperature stable electrodes, one is left with only one and that too, an expensive choice, namely, fluorine-doped SnO₂ (FTO). It is rather difficult to replace FTO with a low-cost TCE due to stability issues. In the present work, we have shown that an Al nanomesh fabricated employing the crack template method exhibits extreme thermal stability in air even at 500 °C, compared with that of FTO. In order to fill in the non-conducting island regions present in between the mesh wires, a moderately conducting material SnO₂ layer was found adequate. The innovative step employed in the present work relates to the SnO₂ deposition without damaging the underneath Al, which is a challenge in itself, as the commonly used precursor, SnCl₂ solution, is quite corrosive toward Al. Optimization of spray coating of the precursor while the Al mesh on a glass substrate held at an appropriate temperature was the key to form a stable hybrid electrode. The resulting Al/SnO₂ electrode exhibited an excellent transparency of ∼83% at 550 nm and a low sheet resistance of 5.5 Ω/□. SnO₂ coating additionally made the TCE scratch-proof and mechanically stable, as the adhesion tape test showed only 8% change in sheet resistance after 1000 cycles. Further, to give FTO-like surface finish, the SnO₂ surface was fluorinated by treating with a Selectfluor solution. As a result, the Al/F-SnO₂ hybrid film exhibited one order higher surface conductivity with negligible sensitivity toward humidity and volatile organics, while becoming robust toward neutral electrochemical environments. Finally, a custom-designed projection lithography technique was used to pixelate the Al/SnO₂ hybrid film for optoelectronic device applications.

High extinction ratio terahertz broadband polarizer based on the aligned Ni nanowire arrays

We present a broadband terahertz (THz) polarizer based on the stacks of aligned Ni nanowire (NW) arrays. We demonstrated that the polarizer has an extinction ratio of 58.8 dB and an average extinction ratio of 46.6 dB throughout a frequency range of 0.3-2.3 THz. Compared to carbon-nanotube and metallic wire-grid polarizers, our Ni-NW polarizers with rapid, reliable, low-cost fabrication processes are ideal candidates for emerging THz technologies.

Continuous-Flow Separation and Efficient Concentration of Foodborne Bacteria from Large Volume Using Nickel Nanowire Bridge in Microfluidic Chip

Separation and concentration of target bacteria has become essential to sensitive and accurate detection of foodborne bacteria to ensure food safety. In this study, we developed a bacterial separation system for continuous-flow separation and efficient concentration of foodborne bacteria from large volume using a nickel nanowire (NiNW) bridge in the microfluidic chip. The synthesized NiNWs were first modified with the antibodies against the target bacteria and injected into the microfluidic channel to form the NiNW bridge in the presence of the external arc magnetic field. Then, the large volume of bacterial sample was continuous-flow injected to the channel, resulting in specific capture of the target bacteria by the antibodies on the NiNW bridge to form the NiNW–bacteria complexes. Finally, these complexes were flushed out of the channel and concentrated in a lower volume of buffer solution, after the magnetic field was removed. This bacterial separation system was able to separate up to 74% of target bacteria from 10 mL of bacterial sample at low concentrations of ≤10² CFU/mL in 3 h, and has the potential to separate other pathogenic bacteria from large volumes of food samples by changing the antibodies.
