Analysis of the characteristics of silver nanowires (AgNW) random network for transparent heater applications

Transparent heaters (THs) find widespread application in various indoor and outdoor settings, such as LCD panels and motorcycle helmet visors. Among the materials used for efficient TH performance, the AgNW network stands out due to its high conductivity, substantial transmittance, and minimal solution requirement. Extensive research has been directed towards enhancing AgNW characteristics, focusing on smaller diameters and longer wires. In TH applications, the primary considerations include a rapid response and elevated temperature. Consequently, this research delves into investigating the impact of parameters like diameter, length, and density on random AgNW networks under varying applied voltages. The finite element method is employed for analyzing temperature changes in response to voltage application, particularly in scenarios involving small-scale setups with high-density and high-percolation AgNW networks. The results reveal a significant increase in the thermal transition rate, ranging from 28% to 36%, with varying densities in the random network. Within the same density, the AgNW network with larger diameters and lengths demonstrates the highest temperatures, aligning with previous calculations. Furthermore, a trade-off exists between optical properties in smaller diameters and electrical properties in larger diameters within a relatively narrow temperature range.

Advances in Printed Electronic Textiles

Electronic textiles (e-textiles) have emerged as a revolutionary solution for personalized healthcare, enabling the continuous collection and communication of diverse physiological parameters when seamlessly integrated with the human body. Among various methods employed to create wearable e-textiles, printing offers unparalleled flexibility and comfort, seamlessly integrating wearables into garments. This has spurred growing research interest in printed e-textiles, due to their vast design versatility, material options, fabrication techniques, and wide-ranging applications. Here, a comprehensive overview of the crucial considerations in fabricating printed e-textiles is provided, encompassing the selection of conductive materials and substrates, as well as the essential pre- and post-treatments involved. Furthermore, the diverse printing techniques and the specific requirements are discussed, highlighting the advantages and limitations of each method. Additionally, the multitude of wearable applications made possible by printed e-textiles is explored, such as their integration as various sensors, supercapacitors, and heated garments. Finally, a forward-looking perspective is provided, discussing future prospects and emerging trends in the realm of printed wearable e-textiles. As advancements in materials science, printing technologies, and design innovation continue to unfold, the transformative potential of printed e-textiles in healthcare and beyond is poised to revolutionize the way wearable technology interacts and benefits.

Recent Advances in Sensor-Actuator Hybrid Soft Systems: Core Advantages, Intelligent Applications, and Future Perspectives

The growing demand for soft intelligent systems, which have the potential to be used in a variety of fields such as wearable technology and human-robot interaction systems, has spurred the development of advanced soft transducers. Among soft systems, sensor-actuator hybrid systems are considered the most promising due to their effective and efficient performance, resulting from the synergistic and complementary interaction between their sensor and actuator components. Recent research on integrated sensor and actuator systems has resulted in a range of conceptual and practical soft systems. This review article provides a comprehensive analysis of recent advances in sensor and actuator integrated systems, which are grouped into three categories based on their primary functions: i) actuator-assisted sensors for intelligent detection, ii) sensor-assisted actuators for intelligent movement, and iii) sensor-actuator interactive devices for a hybrid of intelligent detection and movement. In addition, several bottlenecks in current studies are discussed, and prospective outlooks, including potential applications, are presented. This categorization and analysis will pave the way for the advancement and commercialization of sensor and actuator-integrated systems.

A thin-film polymer heating element with a continuous silver nanowires network embedded inside

This study presents a method for fabricating a film-based heating element using a polymer material with an array of intersecting conductive elements embedded within it. Track-etched membranes (TM) with a thickness of 10μm were used as the template, and their pores were filled with metal, forming a three-dimensional grid. Due to the unique manufacturing process of TM, the pores inside intersect with each other, allowing for contacts between individual nanowires (NWs) when filled with metal. Experimental results demonstrated that filling the TM pores with silver allows for heating temperatures up to 78 degrees without deformation or damage to the heating element. The resulting flexible heating element can be utilized in medical devices for heating purposes or as a thermal barrier coating.

Nanoscale three-dimensional fabrication based on mechanically guided assembly

The growing demand for complex three-dimensional (3D) micro-/nanostructures has inspired the development of the corresponding manufacturing techniques. Among these techniques, 3D fabrication based on mechanically guided assembly offers the advantages of broad material compatibility, high designability, and structural reversibility under strain but is not applicable for nanoscale device printing because of the bottleneck at nanofabrication and design technique. Herein, a configuration-designable nanoscale 3D fabrication is suggested through a robust nanotransfer methodology and design of substrate's mechanical characteristics. Covalent bonding-based two-dimensional nanotransfer allowing for nanostructure printing on elastomer substrates is used to address fabrication problems, while the feasibility of configuration design through the modulation of substrate's mechanical characteristics is examined using analytical calculations and numerical simulations, allowing printing of various 3D nanostructures. The printed nanostructures exhibit strain-independent electrical properties and are therefore used to fabricate stretchable H₂ and NO₂ sensors with high performances stable under external strains of 30%.

A solution-processable and highly flexible conductor of a fluoroelastomer FKM and carbon nanotubes with tuned electrical conductivity and mechanical performance

The use of fluoroelastomer nanocomposites for flexible electronics is increasing due to their high deformability and recoverability. Often, a high amount of conductive nanofillers and crosslinking agents is required to improve their mechanical performance, which unfavorably affects the electrical percolation threshold and conductivity due to dispersion issues. Herein, we developed a unique solution mixing (SM) technique by a fine-tuned formulation to obtain well-dispersed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in fluoroelastomer FKM for both low and high CNT concentrations (0.2 phr and 3 phr). Effective nano-network formation was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and oscillatory shear rheological tests. Compared to the melt mixing (MM) process, the stretchability of neat FKM improves to 503% in the SM process versus 430% in the MM process. The electrical conductivity of the SM samples percolates at significantly lower filler concentrations (i.e., 0.35 phr in SM vs. 0.45 phr in MM) with a maximum value of 7 × 10^-1 S cm^-1 for 3 phr. Overall, the 2 phr CNT/FKM nanocomposite fabricated by SM exceeds those of carbon-based FKM conductors reported in the literature. The enhanced electrical and mechanical properties include an electrical conductivity of 3 × 10^-1 S cm^-1, a strain-to-failure of 300%, and a tensile strength at break of 12 MPa. This process is a promising approach for fabricating fluoroelastomer nanocomposites of a mechanically robust and stable stretchable conductor for various wearable electronic devices.

Synthesis of PEDOT:PSS Solution-Processed Electronic Textiles for Enhanced Joule Heating

Textile-based flexible and wearable electronic devices provide an excellent solution to thermal management systems, thermal therapy, and deicing applications through the Joule heating approach. However, challenges persist in designing such cost-effective electronic devices for efficient heating performance. Herein, this study adopted a facile solution-processed strategy, "dip-coating", to develop a high-performance Joule heating device by unformly coating the intrinsically conducting polymer (CP) poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) onto the surface of cotton textiles. The structural and morphological attributes of the cotton/CP mixture were evaluated using various characterization techniques. The electrothermal characteristics of the cotton/CP sample included rapid thermal response, uniform surface temperature distribution up to 94 °C, excellent stability, and endurance in heating performance under various mechanical deformations. The real-time illustration of the fabric heater affixed on a human finger has demonstrated its outstanding potential for thermal therapy applications. The fabricated heater may further expand it purposes toward deicing, defogging, and defrosting applications.

A Biaxially Stretchable and Self-Sensing Textile Heater Using Silver Nanowire Composite

Wearable heaters have garnered significant attention from academia and industry for their great potential in thermotherapy. Silver nanowire (AgNW) is a promising conductive material for flexible and stretchable electrodes. Here, a resistive, biaxially stretchable heater based on AgNW composite is reported for the first time, where a AgNW percolation network is encased in a thin polyimide (PI) film and integrated with a highly stretchable textile. AgNW/PI is patterned with a 2D Kirigami structure, which enables constant resistance under a large tensile strain (up to uniaxial 100% strain and 50% biaxial strain). The heater can achieve a high temperature of ∼140 °C with a low current of 0.125 A, fast heating and cooling rates of ∼16.5 and ∼14.1 °C s^-1, respectively, and stable performance over 400 heating cycles. A feedback control system is developed to provide constant heating temperature under a temperature change of the surrounding environment. Demonstrated applications in applying thermotherapy at the curvilinear surface of the knee using the stretchable heater illustrate its promising potential for wearable applications.

Rapid and economic preparation of wearable thermotherapy pad based on simple cut-patterning of metal foil supported by plastic sheets

Stretchable and skin-mountable heaters have found application in the emerging industry of wearable thermotherapy devices. However, despite their excellent heating performances, most of them commonly suffer from complex, time-consuming, costly, or insufficiently reproducible fabrication processes. In this study, we report a simple, economic, and reproducible strategy to fabricate high-performance stretchable heaters based on facile cut-patterning of plastic sheet/metal foil/plastic sheet (PMP) structures. Further, this method can be executed without expensive materials or cumbersome material synthesis. The fabricated PMP heater is confirmed to exhibit excellent and uniform heating performance at a low voltage and satisfactory electrothermal stability even under high strain and repeated loads. Additionally, the proposed heater designs can be easily customized by simply changing the computer-aided design drawings during the cutting process, which also enables fabrication of devices with large area. The fabricated PMP heater is confirmed to be able to maintain conformal contact with target surfaces even under stretched conditions, inducing a fairly uniform temperature distribution. Finally, it is successfully demonstrated that a PMP heating band can be easily worn on the wrist and is capable of transferring enough heat to increase blood perfusion in the heated area even at a low voltage, highlighting its potential in wearable thermotherapy.

A simple, economic, and reproducible fabrication route to high-performance stretchable heaters is proposed towards wearable thermotherapy.

Microporous Elastomer Filter Coated with Metal Organic Frameworks for Improved Selectivity and Stability of Metal Oxide Gas Sensors

Despite various advantages and usefulness of semiconductor metal oxide gas sensors, low selectivity and humidity interference have limited their practical applications. In order to resolve these issues, we propose a new concept of a selective gas filtering structure that increases the gas selectivity and decreases the moisture interference of metal oxide gas sensors by coating metal organic frameworks (MOFs) on a microporous elastomer scaffold. Cu(BTC) with an excellent selective adsorption capacity for carbon monoxide (CO) compared to hydrogen (H₂) and MIL-160 with an excellent moisture adsorption capacity were uniformly coated on the microporous polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) structure through a squeeze coating method, resulting in a high content of MOFs with a large effective surface area. A Cu(BTC)-coated microporous PDMS filter showed an excellent adsorption efficiency (62.4%) for CO, thereby dramatically improving the selectivity of H₂/CO by up to 2.6 times. In addition, an MIL-160 coated microporous PDMS filter showed a high moisture adsorption efficiency (76.2%).

Functional Fibers, Composites and Textiles Utilizing Photothermal and Joule Heating

This review focuses on the mechanism of adjusting the thermal environment surrounding the human body via textiles. Recently highlighted technologies for thermal management are based on the photothermal conversion principle and Joule heating for wearable electronics. Recent innovations in this technology are described, with a focus on reports in the last three years and are categorized into three subjects: (1) thermal management technologies of a passive type using light irradiation of the outside environment (photothermal heating), (2) those of an active type employing external electrical circuits (Joule heating), and (3) biomimetic structures. Fibers and textiles from the design of fibers and textiles perspective are also discussed with suggestions for future directions to maximize thermal storage and to minimize heat loss.
