Photoinduced Charge Transfer Empowers Ta4C3 and Nb4C3 MXenes with High SERS Performance

This study introduces two-dimensional (2D) Ta4C3 and Nb4C3 MXenes as outstanding materials for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing, marking a significant departure from traditional noble-metal substrates. These MXenes exhibit exceptional SERS capabilities, achieving enhancement factors around 105 and detection limits as low as 10-7 M for various analytes, including environmental pollutants and drugs. The core of their SERS functionality is attributed to the robust interfacial photoinduced charge-transfer interactions between the MXenes and the adsorbed molecules. This deep insight not only advances our understanding of MXene materials in SERS applications but also opens new avenues for developing highly sensitive and selective SERS sensors. The potential of Ta4C3 and Nb4C3 MXenes to revolutionize SERS technology underscores their importance in environmental monitoring, food safety, and beyond.

Effect of wavelength and liquid on formation of Ag, Au, Ag/Au nanoparticles via picosecond laser ablation and SERS-based detection of DMMP

The present study investigates the effects of input wavelength (1064, 532, and 355 nm) and surrounding liquid environment (distilled water and aqueous NaCl solution) on the picosecond laser ablation on silver (Ag), gold (Au), and Ag/Au alloy targets. The efficacy of the laser ablation technique was meticulously evaluated by analyzing the ablation rates, surface plasmon resonance peak positions, and particle size distributions of the obtained colloids. The nanoparticles (NPs) were characterized using the techniques of UV-visible absorption, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Furthermore, NPs of various sizes ranging from 6 to 35 nm were loaded onto a filter paper by a simple and effective drop-casting approach to achieve flexible surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates/sensors. These substrates were tested using a simple, portable Raman device to identify various hazardous chemicals (malachite green, methyl salicylate, and thiram). The stability of the substrates was also systematically investigated by determining the decay percentages in the SERS signals over 60 days. The optimized SERS substrate was subsequently employed to detect chemical warfare agent (CWA) simulants such as methyl salicylate (a CWA simulant for sulfur mustard) and dimethyl methyl phosphonate (has some structural similarities to the G-series nerve agents) at different laser excitations (325, 532, and 633 nm). A notably higher SERS efficiency for CWA simulants was observed at a 325 nm Raman excitation. Our findings reveal that a higher ablation yield was observed at IR irradiation than those obtained at the other wavelengths. A size decrease of the NPs was noticed by changing the liquid environment to an electrolyte. These findings have significant implications for developing more efficient and stable SERS substrates for chemical detection applications.

Charge-transfer-driven ultrasensitive SERS sensing in a two-dimensional titanium carbonitride MXene

Two-dimensional (2D) MXenes stand out as promising platforms for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing owing to their metallic feature, various compositions, high surface area, compatibility with functionalization, and ease of fabrication. In this work, we report a high-performance 2D titanium carbonitride (Ti3CN) MXene SERS substrate. We reveal that the abundant electronic density of states near the Fermi level of Ti3CN MXene boosts the efficiency of photo-induced charge transfer at the interface of Ti3CN/molecule, resulting in significant Raman enhancement. The SERS sensitivity of Ti3CN MXene is further promoted through a 2D morphology regulation and molecular enrichment strategies. Moreover, prohibited drugs are detectable on this substrate, presenting the potential of trace-amount analysis on Ti3CN MXene. This work provides a deep insight of the SERS mechanisms of Ti3CN MXene and broadens the practical application of transition metal carbonitride MXene SERS substrates.

Two-Dimensional Printed AgNPs@Paper Swab for SERS Screening of Pesticide Residues on Apples and Pears

In recent years, growing food safety and quality concerns have emerged and created an urgent need for the development of rapid and reliable food control technologies. This study proposes a novel surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate printing technology that utilizes commercial filter paper functionalized by silver nanoparticles. We modified the Automatic TLC Sampler using a two-dimensional (2D) printer. The modification allows for various sampling modes which can be applied to 2D printing. The shape and size of nano silver on the substrate were determined, and the substrate sensitivity, uniformity, and stability were evaluated. As demonstrated by the experimental outcomes, the proposed technology is highly sensitive and reproducible, that is, the limit of quantitation was 10^-5 mg/kg, and the spot-to-spot and block-to-block Raman intensity variations were below 4.2%. We also successfully applied the technology to pears and apples for thiram recognition, yielding outstanding detectability down to 2.5 × 10^-6 and 3.9 × 10^-7 mg/mL (equal to 2.5 × 10^-3 and 3.9 × 10^-4 mg/kg), respectively. These were well below the maximum residue limit (7 mg/kg). More importantly, the linear relationships between thiram levels and the SERS intensity allow for sensitive monitoring of minute variations in agricultural insecticide residues. This proposed detection method can realize in situ detection with a strong signal fingerprint.

High-specificity molecular sensing on an individual whispering-gallery-mode cavity: coupling-enhanced Raman scattering by photoinduced charge transfer and cavity effects

Optical whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) cavities have gained considerable interest because of their unique properties of enhanced light-matter interactions. Conventional WGM sensing is based on the mechanisms of mode shift, mode broadening, or mode splitting, which requires a small mode volume and an ultrahigh Q-factor. Besides, WGM sensing suffers from a lack of specificity in identifying substances, and additional chemical functionalization or incorporation of plasmonic materials is required for achieving good specificity. Herein, we propose a new sensing method based on an individual WGM cavity to achieve ultrasensitive and high-specificity molecular sensing, which combines the features of enhanced light-matter interactions on the WGM cavity and the "fingerprint spectrum" of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). This method identifies the substance by monitoring the Raman signal enhanced by the WGM cavity rather than monitoring the variation of the WGM itself. Therefore, ultrasensitive and high-specificity molecular sensing can be accomplished even on a low-Q cavity. The working principles of the proposed sensing method were also systematically investigated in terms of photoinduced charge transfer, Purcell effect, and optical resonance coupling. This work provides a new WGM sensing approach as well as a strategy for the design of a high-performance SERS substrate by creating an optical resonance mode.

Mixed valence Ce-doped TiO2 with multiple energy levels and efficient charge transfer for boosted SERS performance

Considering the variable valence characteristics of rare earth elements, they can be in a variety of valence forms coexistence. Doping of rare earth element with different valence states may produce different energy levels to tune the semiconductor energy band structure. We utilize rare earth element Ce doping TiO₂ for the development of high-performance semiconductor surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates based on an energy-level tuning strategy. Ce doping not only forms multiple energy levels including Ce³⁺ and Ce⁴⁺ metal doping energy levels in the bandgap of TiO₂, but also enriches the surface state level of TiO₂ itself, which together promote the separation of photogenerated carriers and improve charge transfer efficiency between substrates and absorbed molecules. This endows TiO₂ semiconductor substrate with a higher SERS enhancement factor, which can reach 2.2 × 10⁶. The detectable concentration of methylene blue can be as low as 10^-10 mol/L. Moreover, the semiconductor substrate exhibits excellent uniformity and stability. This study not only provides a new strategy to develop excellent semiconductor SERS substrate with multiple energy levels, but also lays the foundation for promising practical application of semiconductor substrate.

Flexible Two-Dimensional Vanadium Carbide MXene-Based Membranes with Ultra-Rapid Molecular Enrichment for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering

Two-dimensional (2D) MXene materials have attracted broad interest in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications by virtue of their abundant surface terminations and excellent photoelectric properties. Herein, we propose to design highly sensitive MXene-based SERS membranes by integrating a 2D downsizing strategy with molecular enrichment approaches. Two types of 2D vanadium carbide (V₄C₃ and V₂C) MXenes are demonstrated for ultrasensitive SERS sensing, and corresponding SERS mechanisms including the effect of 2D vanadium carbide thickness on their electron density states and interfacial photoinduced charge transfer resonance were discussed. A 2D downsizing strategy authorizes nonplasmonic SERS detection with a sensitivity of 1 × 10^-7 M. Moreover, the performance can be further upgraded by vacuum-assisted filtration, which enables an ultrarapid molecular enrichment (within 2 min), ultrahigh molecular removal rate (over 95%), and improved sensitivity (5 × 10^-9 M). This work may shed light on the MXene-based materials as an innovative platform for nonplasmonic SERS detection.

Inkjet Printing and 3D Printing Strategies for Biosensing, Analytical, and Diagnostic Applications

Inkjet printing and 3D inkjet printing have found many applications in the fabrication of a great variety of devices, which have been developed with the aim to improve and simplify the design, fabrication, and performance of sensors and analytical platforms. Here, developments of these printing technologies reported during the last 10 years are reviewed and their versatile applicability for the fabrication of improved sensing platforms and analytical and diagnostic sensor systems is demonstrated. Illustrative examples are reviewed in the context of particular advantages provided by inkjet printing technologies. Next to aspects of device printing and fabrication strategies, the utilization of inkjet dispensing, which can be implemented into common analytical tools utilizing customized inkjet printing equipment as well as state-of-the-art consumer inkjet printing devices, is highlighted. This review aims to providing a comprehensive overview of examples integrating inkjet and 3D inkjet printing technologies into device layout fabrication, dosing, and analytical applications to demonstrate the versatile applicability of these technologies, and furthermore, to inspire the utilization of inkjet printing for future developments.

Enhancement of the Detection Performance of Paper-Based Analytical Devices by Nanomaterials

Paper-based analytical devices (PADs), including lateral flow assays (LFAs), dipstick assays and microfluidic PADs (μPADs), have a great impact on the healthcare realm and environmental monitoring. This is especially evident in developing countries because PADs-based point-of-care testing (POCT) enables to rapidly determine various (bio)chemical analytes in a miniaturized, cost-effective and user-friendly manner. Low sensitivity and poor specificity are the main bottlenecks associated with PADs, which limit the entry of PADs into the real-life applications. The application of nanomaterials in PADs is showing great improvement in their detection performance in terms of sensitivity, selectivity and accuracy since the nanomaterials have unique physicochemical properties. In this review, the research progress on the nanomaterial-based PADs is summarized by highlighting representative recent publications. We mainly focus on the detection principles, the sensing mechanisms of how they work and applications in disease diagnosis, environmental monitoring and food safety management. In addition, the limitations and challenges associated with the development of nanomaterial-based PADs are discussed, and further directions in this research field are proposed.

Recent Advances and Applications in Paper-Based Devices for Point-of-Care Testing

Point-of-care testing (POCT), as a portable and user-friendly technology, can obtain accurate test results immediately at the sampling point. Nowadays, microfluidic paper-based analysis devices (μPads) have attracted the eye of the public and accelerated the development of POCT. A variety of detection methods are combined with μPads to realize precise, rapid and sensitive POCT. This article mainly introduced the development of electrochemistry and optical detection methods on μPads for POCT and their applications on disease analysis, environmental monitoring and food control in the past 5 years. Finally, the challenges and future development prospects of μPads for POCT were discussed.

Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy: Applications in Agriculture and Food Safety

Recent global warming has resulted in shifting of weather patterns and led to intensification of natural disasters and upsurges in pests and diseases. As a result, global food systems are under pressure and need adjustments to meet the change—often by pesticides. Unfortunately, such agrochemicals are harmful for humans and the environment, and consequently need to be monitored. Traditional detection methods currently used are time consuming in terms of sample preparation, are high cost, and devices are typically not portable. Recently, Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) has emerged as an attractive candidate for rapid, high sensitivity and high selectivity detection of contaminants relevant to the food industry and environmental monitoring. In this review, the principles of SERS as well as recent SERS substrate fabrication methods are first discussed. Following this, their development and applications for agrifood safety is reviewed, with focus on detection of dye molecules, melamine in food products, and the detection of different classes of pesticides such as organophosphate and neonicotinoids.

Manipulating Hot-Electron Injection in Metal Oxide Heterojunction Array for Ultrasensitive Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering

Efficient photoinduced charge transfer (PICT) resonance is crucial to the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance of metal oxide substrates. Herein, we venture into the hot-electron injection strategy to achieve unprecedented enhanced PICT efficiency between substrates and molecules. A heterojunction array composed of plasmonic MoO₂ and semiconducting WO_3-x is designed to prove the concept. The plasmonic MoO₂ generates intense localized surface plasmon resonance under illumination, which can generate near-field Raman enhancement as well as accompanied plasmon-induced hot-electrons. The hot-electron injection in direct interfacial charge transfer and plasmon-induced charge transfer process can effectively promote the PICT efficiency between substrates and molecules, achieving a record Raman enhancement factor among metal oxide substrates (2.12 × 10⁸) and the ultrasensitive detection of target molecule down to 10^-11 M. This work demonstrates the possibility of hot-electron manipulation to realize unprecedented Raman enhancement in metal oxides, offering a cutting-edge strategy to design high-performance SERS substrates.

Recent advances of environmental pollutants detection via paper-based sensing strategy

Paper has become one of the most promising substrates for building low-cost and powerful sensing platforms due to its self-pumping ability and compatibility with multiple patterning methods. Paper-based sensors have been greatly developed in the field of environmental monitoring. In this review, we introduced the research and application of paper-based sensors in environmental monitoring, focusing on the deposition and patterning methods of building paper-based sensors, and summarized the applications of detecting environmental pollutants, including metal ions, anions, explosives, neurotoxins, volatile organic compounds, and small molecules. In addition, the development prospects and challenges of promoting paper-based sensors are also discussed. The current review will provide references for the construction of portable paper-based sensors, and has implications for the field of on-site real-time detection of the environment.

Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Monitoring of Oxidation States in Defect-Engineered Two-Dimensional Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Recent studies have found that some transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with their own defects are difficult to store in the air for a long time. Worse stability of TMDs under extreme conditions has also been reported. Therefore, monitoring the oxidation and degradation processes of TMDs can directly guide the stability prediction of TMD-based devices and monitor TMDs quality. Herein, with the case of molybdenum disulfide, UV-ozone defect engineering is used to simulate the oxidation and degradation of TMDs under severe conditions. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering based on a chemical mechanism was first introduced to the dynamic monitoring of defect evolution in the oxidation and degradation of TMDs, and succeeds in tracking the TMDs oxidation state by the quantitative method. It is expected that this technology can be extended to the quantification and tracking of oxidation and degradation of other 2D materials.

Syntheses of Silver Nanowires Ink and Printable Flexible Transparent Conductive Film: A Review

Nowadays, flexible transparent conductive film (FTCF) is one of the important components of many flexible electronic devices. Due to comprehensive performances on optoelectronics, FTCF based on silver nanowires (AgNWs) networks have received great attention and are expected to be a new generation of transparent conductive film materials. Due to its simple process, printed electronic technology is now an important technology for the rapid production of low-cost and high-quality flexible electronic devices. AgNWs-based FTCF fabricated by using printed electronic technology is considered to be the most promising process. Here, the preparation and performance of AgNW ink are introduced. The current printing technologies are described, including gravure printing, screen printing and inkjet printing. In addition, the latest methods to improve the conductivity, adhesion, and stability of AgNWs-based FTCF are introduced. Finally, the applications of AgNWs-based FTCF in solar cells, transparent film heaters, optoelectronic devices, touch panel, and sensors are introduced in detail. Therefore, combining various printing technologies with AgNWs ink may provide more opportunities for the development of flexible electronic devices in the future.

Silver mirror films deposited on well plates for SERS detection of multi-analytes: Aiming at 96-well technology

96-Well technology is associated with automated sample preparation and simultaneous analysis based on the low-cost well plate format. To explore the potential applications of 96-well technology in SERS detection, we examined the surface-bound electroless deposition procedure for the preparation of uniform and stable Ag mirror films on polydopamine (PDA)-coated well plates as active-SERS substrates. In the presented procedure, small Ag seeds assembled on PDA coating were employed as the surface-bound catalyst and provided the active sites for electroless Ag deposition. The high-quality Ag mirror films showed high performance in terms of sensitivity, uniformity, reproducibility and stability using rhodamine 6G (R6G) as the probe molecule. A remarkable enhancement factor of 3.41 × 10⁸ was obtained. The relative standard deviations against well-by-well and batch-by-batch reproducibility were less than 5%. The SERS films on well plates were successfully used to quantify the amounts of organic dyes (R6G and malachite green) in environmental water samples and small biological molecules (adenosine triphosphate and adenine) in urine matrix, displaying satisfactory sensitivity, selectivity and recovery. Their limit of detection values were at nanomolar, even picomolar concentration.
