'Sandwich'-like hybrid ZnO thin films produced by a combination of atomic layer deposition and wet-chemistry using a mercapto silane as single organic precursor

Synthesis of Silver, Gold, and Platinum Doped Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles by Pulsed Laser Ablation in Water

In this paper, we propose a simple two-step method for the synthesis of Ag, Au, and Pt-doped ZnO nanoparticles. The method is based on the fabrication of targets using the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique where thin layers of metals (Ag, Pt, Au) have been deposited on a metal-oxide bulk substrate (ZnO). Such formed structures were used as a target for the production of doped nanoparticles (ZnO: Ag, ZnO: Au, and ZnO: Pt) by laser ablation in water. The influence of Ag, Au, and Pt doping on the optical properties, structure and composition, sizing, and morphology was studied using UV-Visible (UV-Vis) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. The band-gap energy decreased to 3.06, 3.08, and 3.15 for silver, gold, and platinum-doped ZnO compared to the pure ZnO (3.2 eV). PL spectra showed a decrease in the recombination rate of the electrons and holes in the case of doped ZnO. SEM, TEM, and AFM images showed spherical-shaped nanoparticles with a relatively smooth surface. The XRD patterns confirm that Ag, Au, and Pt were well incorporated inside the ZnO lattice and maintained a hexagonal wurtzite structure. This work could provide a new way for synthesizing various doped materials.

In situ siloxane passivation of colloidal lead halide perovskite via hot injection for light-emitting diodes

All-inorganic cesium lead halide perovskite (CsPbX₃; X = Cl, Br) nanocrystals (NCs) are synthesized via a modified hot injection method using 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS), together with oleic acid and oleylamine, for in situ passivation of the surface defects. The surface chemistry, revealed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques, shows an absence of Si-O-Si network and C-O groups on these in situ passivated CsPbX₃ NCs, denoted as InMP-CsPbX₃, which is in strong contrast to the counterpart NCs obtained via a postsynthesis exchange strategy. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern indicates a lattice structure significantly strained from the cubic structure. The synthesis of these InMP-CsPbX₃ NCs is highly reproducible, and the colloids are stable in nonpolar solvents. The emission wavelength of CsPb(Cl/Br)₃ mixed halide perovskite NCs is tuned from 405 nm to 508 nm by reducing the nominal Cl/Br ratio, while the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) is greatly enhanced over the whole spectral range. More importantly, the InMP-treatment is among the few strategies that are promising for electroluminescence in light-emitting diodes.

Surface Modification of Catalysts via Atomic Layer Deposition for Pollutants Elimination

In recent years, atomic layer deposition (ALD) is widely used for surface modification of materials to improve the catalytic performance for removing pollutants, e.g., CO, hydrocarbons, heavy metal ions, and organic pollutants, and much progress has been achieved. In this review, we summarize the recent development of ALD applications in environmental remediation from the perspective of surface modification approaches, including conformal coating, uniform particle deposition, and area-selective deposition. Through the ALD conformal coating, the activity of photocatalysts improved. Uniform particle deposition is used to prepare nanostructured catalysts via ALD for removal of air pollutions and dyes. Area-selective deposition is adopted to cover the specific defects on the surface of materials and synthesize bimetallic catalysts to remove CO and other contaminations. In addition, the design strategy of catalysts and shortcomings of current studies are discussed in each section. At last, this review points out some potential research trends and comes up with a few routes to further improve the performance of catalysts via ALD surface modification and deeper investigate the ALD reaction mechanisms.
