Innovations in the synthesis of graphene nanostructures for bio and gas sensors

Sensors play a significant role in modern technologies and devices used in industries, hospitals, healthcare, nanotechnology, astronomy, and meteorology. Sensors based upon nanostructured materials have gained special attention due to their high sensitivity, precision accuracy, and feasibility. This review discusses the fabrication of graphene-based biosensors and gas sensors, which have highly efficient performance. Significant developments in the synthesis routes to fabricate graphene-based materials with improved structural and surface properties have boosted their utilization in sensing applications. The higher surface area, better conductivity, tunable structure, and atom-thick morphology of these hybrid materials have made them highly desirable for the fabrication of flexible and stable sensors. Many publications have reported various modification approaches to improve the selectivity of these materials. In the current work, a compact and informative review focusing on the most recent developments in graphene-based biosensors and gas sensors has been designed and delivered. The research community has provided a complete critical analysis of the most robust case studies from the latest fabrication routes to the most complex challenges. Some significant ideas and solutions have been proposed to overcome the limitations regarding the field of biosensors and hazardous gas sensors.

Recent Advances in Graphene-Based Nanocomposites for Ammonia Detection

The increasing demand to mitigate the alarming effects of the emission of ammonia (NH3) on human health and the environment has highlighted the growing attention to the design of reliable and effective sensing technologies using novel materials and unique nanocomposites with tunable functionalities. Among the state-of-the-art ammonia detection materials, graphene-based polymeric nanocomposites have gained significant attention. Despite the ever-increasing number of publications on graphene-based polymeric nanocomposites for ammonia detection, various understandings and information regarding the process, mechanisms, and new material components have not been fully explored. Therefore, this review summarises the recent progress of graphene-based polymeric nanocomposites for ammonia detection. A comprehensive discussion is provided on the various gas sensor designs, including chemiresistive, Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM), and Field-Effect Transistor (FET), as well as gas sensors utilising the graphene-based polymer nanocomposites, in addition to highlighting the pros and cons of graphene to enhance the performance of gas sensors. Moreover, the various techniques used to fabricate graphene-based nanocomposites and the numerous polymer electrolytes (e.g., conductive polymeric electrolytes), the ion transport models, and the fabrication and detection mechanisms of ammonia are critically addressed. Finally, a brief outlook on the significant progress, future opportunities, and challenges of graphene-based polymer nanocomposites for the application of ammonia detection are presented.

DFT insights into the selective NH3sensing mechanism of two dimensional ZnTe monolayer

Exploring novel NH₃sensing materials is crucial in chemical industries, fertilizing plants and medical fields. Herein, for the first time, the NH₃sensing behaviors and sensing mechanisms of two dimensional (2D) ZnTe monolayer are systematically investigated by density functional theory calculations. It is shown that 2D ZnTe monolayer exhibits excellent selective NH₃sensing properties. (220) crystal facet of ZnTe possesses a higher NH₃adsorption energy (-1.59 eV) and a larger charge transfer (0.195e) than (111) and (311) crystal facets. The positive charges could enhance NH₃sensing while the negative charges could reduce NH₃sensing. The NH₃adsorption strengths are significantly improved in O₂atmosphere while it is negligibly affected by N₂atmosphere and H₂O atmosphere. Moreover, the presence of Zn vacancy and Fe, Co, Ni doping could improve the NH₃sensing of ZnTe. Additionally, the experimental results confirms that ZnTe possesses a low detection limit of 0.1 ppm NH₃. These theoretical predictions and experimental results present a wide range of possibilities for the further development of ZnTe monolayer in NH₃sensing fields.

Gas Sensitive Characteristics of Polyaniline Decorated with Molybdenum Ditelluride Nanosheets

In this work, hydrochloric acid (HCl)-doped molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe2) nanosheets/polyaniline (PANI) nanofiber composites are prepared by in situ chemical oxidation polymerization, and then the composites are deposited on interdigital electrodes (IDEs) to fabricate a NH3 gas sensor. Morphological analysis of the composites reveals that the PANI fibers are deposited on 2D MoTe2 sheets, showing a porous mesh microstructure structure with a more continuous distribution of PANI layer. FTIR spectrum analysis indicates the interaction between the MoTe2 nanosheets and the PANI in the MoTe2/PANI composites. The results demonstrate that the as-prepared MoTe2/PANI composites exhibit higher response than the pure PANI, in particular, the 8 wt.% MoTe2/PANI composites display about 4.23 times enhancement in response value toward 1000 ppm NH3 gas compared with the pure PANI. The enhanced NH3 gas-sensitive properties may be due to the increasing surface area of MoTe2/PANI composite films and the possible interaction of the P-N heterojunctions formed between PANI and the 2H-MoTe2 nanosheets.

High-performance p-hexafluoroisopropanol phenyl functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube film on surface acoustic wave device for organophosphorus vapor detection

A delay line-type surface acoustic wave (SAW) gas sensor based on p-hexafluoroisopropanol phenyl (HFIPPH) functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) film is developed to detect organophosphorus dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) vapor (a simulant of chemical nerve agent sarin). Inspired by the transfer process of Cu-based graphene, a uniform and size-controllable HFIPPH-MWCNT film is successfully prepared on the SAW device via a wet-etching transfer method. For the first time, we use the method of measuring the change of the sensor's insertion loss to achieve the detection of ultra-low concentration DMMP vapor. The designed sensor exhibits a fast response/recovery time about 3 s/50 s, and a low detection limit of 0.1 ppm. Additionally, the stability and selectivity of the sensor and the influence of humidity on its response are evaluated through experiments. The acoustoelectric effect is proved to be the sensing mechanism of the sensor insertion loss response.

Wool-Based Carbon Fiber/MoS2 Composite Prepared by Low-Temperature Catalytic Hydrothermal Method and Its Application in the Field of Gas Sensors

Under the background of the Paris Agreement on reducing greenhouse gases, waste wools were converted into wool carbon fiber (WCF) and WCF-MoS2 composites by low-temperature catalytic hydrothermal carbonization. Their structures and gas-sensing performances were studied for the first time. Due to the existence of heterojunctions, the responses of the WCF-MoS2 composite to the five analytes were 3-400 times those of MoS2 and 2-11 times those of WCF. Interestingly, because of the N, P, and S elements contained in wools, the WCF prepared by the hydrothermal method was realized the doping of N, P, and S, which caused the sensing curves of WCF to have different shapes for different analytes. This characteristic was also well demonstrated by the WCF-MoS2 composite, which inspired us to realize the discriminative detection only by a single WCF-MoS2 sensor and image recognition technology. What's more, the WCF-MoS2 composite also showed a high sensitivity, a high selectivity, and a rapid response to NH3. The response time and the recovery time to 3 ppm NH3 were about 16 and 5 s, respectively. The detection of limit of WCF-MoS2 for NH3 was 19.1 ppb. This work provides a new idea for the development of sensors and the resource utilization of wool waste.

In-situelectrochemical polymerization of aniline on flexible conductive substrates for supercapacitors and non-enzymatic ascorbic acid sensors

Polyaniline, as a kind of conductive polymer with commercial application prospects, is still under researches in its synthesis and applications. In this work, polyaniline was fabricated on flexible substrates including carbon cloths and polyethylene naphthalate byin situelectropolymerization method. The synthesized flexible electrodes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, High resolution transmission electron microscope, atomic force microscope, Fourier transform infrared, x-ray diffraction, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Owing to the conductivity and the reversible redox property, the polyaniline/carbon cloth electrodes show excellent properties such as decent supercapacitor performance and good detection capability toward ascorbic acid. As supercapacitors, the electrodes exhibit a specific capacitance as high as 776 F g^-1at a current density of 1 A g^-1and a long cycle life of 20 000 times in the three-electrode system. As ascorbic acid sensors, the flexible electrodes demonstrate stable response to ascorbic acid in the range of 1-3000μM with an outstanding sensitivity (4228μA mM^-1cm^-2), low detection limit (1μM), and a fast response time. This work holds promise for high-performance and low-cost flexible electrodes for both supercapacitors and non-enzymatic ascorbic acid sensors, and may inspire inventions of self-powered electrochemical sensor.

Improving Ammonia Detecting Performance of Polyaniline Decorated rGO Composite Membrane with GO Doping

Gas-sensing performance of graphene-based material has been investigated widely in recent years. Polyaniline (PANI) has been reported as an effective method to improve ammonia gas sensors’ response. A gas sensor based on a composite of rGO film and protic acid doped polyaniline (PA-PANI) with GO doping is reported in this work. GO mainly provides NH₃ adsorption sites, and PA-PANI is responsible for charge transfer during the gas-sensing response process. The experimental results indicate that the NH₃ gas response of rGO is enhanced significantly by decorating with PA-PANI. Moreover, a small amount of GO mixed with PA-PANI is beneficial to increase the gas response, which showed an improvement of 262.5% at 25 ppm comparing to no GO mixing in PA-PANI.

Flexible fabric gas sensors based on reduced graphene-polyaniline nanocomposite for highly sensitive NHdetection at room temperature

A flexible fabric gas sensor for the detection of sub-ppm-level NH₃is reported in this paper. The reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-polyaniline (PANI) nanocomposite was successfully coated on cotton thread via anin situpolymerization technique. The morphology, microstructure and composition were analyzed by field-emission scanning electron microscope, x-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, we have studied the responses of the rGO-PANI nanocomposite-based flexible sensors for the detection of NH₃varying from 1-100 ppm, operated at 22 °C. At the optimized concentration of rGO, the response of these sensors increased by 4-5 times in comparison with the pristine rGO and PANI. These flexible sensors exhibited fast response, remarkable long-term stability, good selectivity and a low detection limit. The sensing mechanism for the high sensing performance has been thoroughly discussed and it is mainly due to the distinctive 1D fiber structure, the formation of a p-p heterojunction between the rGO nanosheets and PANI. The rGO-PANI composite-based fabric sensor with low power consumption is a potential flexible electronic device for the detection of NH₃.

Rheological Properties of Graphene Modified Asphalt Binders

Recently, low-cost, high-quality graphene can be obtained readily, so it is potential to prepare conductive graphene modified asphalts (GMAs). In this paper, GMAs were prepared with 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10% of graphene by weight of composites. Dynamic shear rheological experiments conducted from −30 to 120 °C illustrate that elasticity at above ambient temperatures and rutting resistance at higher temperatures are enhanced and, especially, the conceived percolation of GMAs occurs at graphene contents (GC) above 8% which were verified from three changes as GC increases, i.e., the curve characteristics of complex moduli, storage moduli at temperatures over 100 °C, temperatures when the phase angle reaches 90° and the trend of T_G′=G″. The modification mechanisms are different before and after percolation. Before the percolation threshold, graphene which has a molecular structure similar to asphaltene enhances asphalt, like increasing asphaltene components, and after threshold, graphene improves asphalt because of the formed graphene networks. Rotational viscosities test results show that the higher the GC is, the higher the operating temperatures are, but the operating temperatures are higher than 200 °C when GC is above 4%. The percolation helps to further develop conductive asphalt concrete for intelligence pavement, but the operating properties of GMAs need to be improved.
