Bottom-up field-directed self-assembly of magnetic nanoparticles into ordered nano- and macrostructures

Topologically controlled synthesis of active colloidal bipeds

Topological growth control allows to produce a narrow distribution of outgrown colloidal rods with defined and adjustable length. We use an external magnetic field to assemble paramagnetic colloidal spheres into colloidal rods of a chosen length. The rods reside above a metamorphic hexagonal magnetic pattern. The periodic repetition of specific loops of the orientation of an applied external field renders paramagnetic colloidal particles and their assemblies into active bipeds that walk on the pattern. The metamorphic patterns allow the robust and controlled polymerization of single colloids to bipeds of a desired length. The colloids are exposed to this fixed external control loop that causes multiple simultaneous responses: Small bipeds and single colloidal particles interpret the external magnetic loop as an order to walk toward the active zone, where they assemble and polymerize. Outgrown bipeds interpret the same loop as an order to walk away from the active zone. The topological transition occurs solely for the growing biped and nothing is changed in the environment nor in the magnetic control loop. As in many biological systems the decision of a biped that reached its outgrown length to walk away from the reaction site is made internally, not externally.

Adhesion performance of magnetically responsive surfaces under wet conditions

Adhesion is the key functionality to pick-and-place objects in wet environments. Recently, various micropillars and external stimuli have been proposed to achieve reversible wet adhesion. However, their underlying mechanisms of liquid/solid regulations have not been sufficiently revealed. Herein, two kinds of magnetically responsive micropillar arrays with different terminals (pointed and flat) are developed using a spray self-assembly method. The coupling effect of geometric structures and external stimuli on the wet adhesion performance between a solid substrate and the developed surface is discussed. In situ observation and analysis of theoretical models demonstrate that changes in adhesive forces are mainly caused by the length of the liquid bridge and the apparent contact angle of the developed surface. The adhesion conversion efficiency in the presence of an on/off magnetic field can achieve a highest value of 72% for the micropillar arrays with flat terminals, which exceeds 3 times that of the micropillar arrays with pointed terminals. In addition, wet adhesion measurements during the process of repeatedly switching the magnetic field demonstrate the durability and cyclic reversibility of the magnetically responsive surface. Furthermore, the transportation of microcomponents verifies the application potential of the magnetically responsive surface, which may provide inspiration for transfer printing systems and wet climbing robots.

Three-Dimensional Modeling with Osteoblast-like Cells under External Magnetic Field Conditions Using Magnetic Nano-Ferrite Particles for the Development of Cell-Derived Artificial Bone

The progress in artificial bone research is crucial for addressing fractures and bone defects in the aging population. However, challenges persist in terms of biocompatibility and structural complexity. Nanotechnology provides a promising avenue by which to overcome these challenges, with nano-ferrite particles (NFPs) exhibiting superparamagnetic properties. The ability to control cell positioning using a magnetic field opens up new possibilities for customizing artificial bones with specific shapes. This study explores the biological effects of NFPs on osteoblast-like cell lines (MC3T3-E1), including key analyses, such as cell viability, cellular uptake of NFPs, calcification processes, cell migration under external magnetic field conditions, and three-dimensional modeling. The results indicate that the impact of NFPs on cell proliferation is negligible. Fluorescence and transmission electron microscopy validated the cellular uptake of NFPs, demonstrating the potential for precise cell positioning through an external magnetic field. Under calcification-inducing conditions, the cells exhibited sustained calcification ability even in the presence of NFPs. The cell movement analysis observed the controlled movement of NFP-absorbing cells under an external magnetic field. Applying a magnetic field along the z-axis induced the three-dimensional shaping of cells incorporating NFPs, resulting in well-arranged z-axis directional patterns. In this study, NFPs demonstrated excellent biocompatibility and controllability under an external magnetic field, laying the foundation for innovative treatment strategies for customizing artificial bones.

Template-free generation and integration of functional 1D magnetic nanostructures

The direct integration of 1D magnetic nanostructures into electronic circuits is crucial for realizing their great potential as components in magnetic storage, logical devices, and spintronic applications. Here, we present a novel template-free technique for producing magnetic nanochains and nanowires using directed self-assembly of gas-phase-generated metallic nanoparticles. The 1D nanostructures can be self-assembled along most substrate surfaces and can be freely suspended over micrometer distances, allowing for direct incorporation into different device architectures. The latter is demonstrated by a one-step integration of nanochains onto a pre-patterned Si chip and the fabrication of devices exhibiting magnetoresistance. Moreover, fusing the nanochains into nanowires by post-annealing significantly enhances the magnetic properties, with a 35% increase in the coercivity. Using magnetometry, X-ray microscopy, and micromagnetic simulations, we demonstrate how variations in the orientation of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy and the presence of larger multi-domain particles along the nanochains play a key role in the domain formation and magnetization reversal. Furthermore, it is shown that the increased coercivity in the nanowires can be attributed to the formation of a uniform magnetocrystalline anisotropy along the wires and the onset of exchange interactions.

Patterned Nanoparticle Arrays Fabricated Using Liquid Film Rupture Self-Assembly

Self-assembly is an important bottom-up fabrication approach based on accurate manipulation of solid-air-liquid interfaces to construct microscale structures using nanoscale materials. This approach plays a substantial role in the fabrication of microsensors, nanosensors, and actuators. Improving the controllability of self-assembly to realize large-scale regular micro/nano patterns is crucial for this approach's further development and wider applications. Herein, we propose a novel strategy for patterning nanoparticle arrays on soft substrates. This strategy is based on a unique process of liquid film rupture self-assembly that is convenient, precise, and cost-efficient for mass manufacturing. This approach involves two key steps. First, suspended liquid films comprising monolayer polystyrene (PS) spheres are realized via liquid-air interface self-assembly over prepatterned microstructures. Second, these suspended liquid films are ruptured in a controlled manner to induce the self-assembly of internal PS spheres around the morphological edges of the underlying microstructures. This nanoparticle array patterning method is comprehensively investigated in terms of the effect of the PS sphere size, morphological effect of the microstructured substrate, key factors influencing liquid film-rupture self-assembly, and optical transmittance of the fabricated samples. A maximum rupture rate of 95.4% was achieved with an optimized geometric and dimensional design. Compared with other nanoparticle-based self-assembly methods used to form patterned arrays, the proposed approach reduces the waste of nanoparticles substantially because all nanoparticles self-assemble around the prepatterned microstructures. More nanoparticles assemble to form prepatterned arrays, which could strengthen the nanoparticle array network without affecting the initial features of prepatterned microstructures.

Controlled assembly of gold nanoparticles in resonant gold nanoapertures for SERS applications

The controlled assembly of plasmonic nanoparticles is vital for realizing low-cost, high efficiency plasmonic substrates with tunable resonances. Here, we present a strategy to assemble gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in resonant gold nanoapertures (NAs) to enable coupling-mediated near-field enhancement. The NAs templates are fabricated using shadow sphere lithography on polyelectrolyte (PE) coated substrates. Subsequently, AuNPs are assembled in the resonant NA templates via a simple immersion step. The PE layer, AuNP concentration, NaCl concentration, incubation time, and template thickness are used to control the particle number per aperture and the interparticle distance of the AuNP assemblies. The fabricated AuNP-NA substrates are evaluated for their SERS potential using 4-Mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA) as a Raman reporter molecule. The SERS intensity of the AuNP-NA templates can be enhanced by ten times by controlling the AuNP and NA template parameters as compared to the bare NA templates. Numerical simulations show that the coupling between the various plasmonic modes is crucial for this SERS enhancement. The proposed strategy can be used to fabricate hybrid AuNP-NA based SERS substrates with improved sensitivity.

Morphology-Evolved Succulent-like FeCo Microarchitectures with Magnetic Configuration Regulation for Enhanced Microwave Absorption

The regulation of magnetic configuration through diverse morphologies to achieve a rapid magnetic response has attracted considerable academic favor on account of the unique application prospects in various fields. Herein, porous FeCo alloys with morphology evolved from spheres to succulent-like microstructures are successfully constructed via a facile hydrothermal reaction-hydrogen reduction synthetic strategy. A multiple balance/competition mechanism is proposed, including the coexistence of the dissolution-precipitation balance of hydroxides and the dissociation-stability balance of coordination compounds, the Fe³⁺-Co²⁺ competition, and the precipitation-coordination reaction contest. As the morphology evolves to a succulent-like assembly, the multidomain features with a stable combination of vortex states and the violent motion of magnetic vectors contribute to the improvement of magnetic storage capacity and loss capability, which are evidenced by the off-axis electron holography and micromagnetic simulation. Consequently, the succulent-like FeCo exhibits enhanced permeability and microwave absorption performance. The effective absorption bandwidth reaches 5.68 GHz, and the maximum reflection loss is elevated to -53.81 dB. This work sheds considerable insight into the microstructure regulation with an application in microwave absorption and offers guidance in research for the topological magnetic configuration and dynamic response mechanism of magnetic alloys.

Single-Step Fabrication of Longtail Glasswing Butterfly-Inspired Omnidirectional Antireflective Structures

Most bio-inspired antireflective nanostructures are extremely vulnerable and suffer from complicated lithography-based fabrication procedures. To address the issues, we report a scalable and simple non-lithography-based approach to engineer robust antireflective structures, inspired by the longtail glasswing butterfly, in a single step. The resulting two-dimensional randomly arranged 80/130/180 nm silica colloids, partially embedded in a polymeric matrix, generate a gradual refractive index transition at the air/substrate interface to suppress light reflection. Importantly, the randomly arranged subwavelength silica colloids display even better antireflection performance for large incident angles than that of two-dimensional non-close-packed silica colloidal crystals. The biomimetic coating is of considerable technological importance in numerous practical applications.

Hierarchical colloidosomes self-assembled from block copolymer micelles via emulsion interfacial confinement

Hierarchical self-assembly of polymeric building blocks into high-level colloidosomes is desirable to not only design novel nanostructures but also fabricate the complex artificial materials across many length scales with multifunctionality. Although great progress has been made in the designing the hierarchical colloidosomes, the fabrication of polymeric colloidosomes self-assembled from block copolymer (BCP) colloidal nanoparticles still remains challenge. Here, we report the fabrication of the hierarchical polymeric colloidosomes with typical hollow internal structures self-assembled from the polystyrene-block-poly (2-vinyl pyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) BCP spherical micelles through the emulsion interfacial confinement, which is constructed through the water-in-1-butanol emulsion system. Moreover, the hierarchical colloidosomes can disassemble into the original uniform spherical micelles under the acid aqueous solution, indicating that the colloidosomes possess good pH stimuli-responsibility. Finally, the stability of the colloidosomes can be greatly improved by cross-linking the P2VP corona of original spherical micelles, offering the effective templates for construction of the multifunctional materials. This finding provides a simple yet effective method for the fabrication of the hierarchical colloidosomes from the BCP building blocks.

Large exchange bias in Cr substituted Fe3O4 nanoparticles with FeO subdomains

Tuning the anisotropy through exchange bias in bimagnetic nanoparticles is an active research strategy for enhancing and tailoring the magnetic properties for a wide range of applications. Here we present a structural and magnetic characterization of unique FeCr-oxide nanoparticles generated from seed material with a Fe : Cr ratio of 4.71 : 1 using a physical aerosol method based on spark ablation. The nanoparticles have a novel bimagnetic structure composed of a 40 nm ferrimagnetic Cr-substituted Fe3O4 structure with 4 nm antiferromagnetic FexO subdomains. Cooling in an applied magnetic field across the Néel temperature of the FexO subdomains results in a significant shift in the hysteresis, demonstrating the presence of a large exchange bias. The observed shift of μ0HE = 460 mT is among the largest values reported for FexO-Fe3O4-based nanoparticles and is attributed to the large antiferromagnetic-ferrimagnetic interface area provided by the subdomains.

Design and operation of magnetophoretic systems at microscale: Device and particle approaches

Combining both device and particle designs are the essential concepts to be considered in magnetophoretic system development. Researcher efforts are often dedicated to only one of these design aspects and neglecting the interplay between them. Herein, to bring out importance of the idea of integration between device and particle, we reviewed the working principle of magnetophoretic system (includes both device and particle design concepts). Since, the magnetophoretic force is influenced by both field gradient and magnetization volume, hence, accurate prediction of the magnetophoretic force is relying on the availability of information on both parameters. In device design, we focus on the different strategies used to create localized high-field gradient. For particle design, we emphasize on the scaling between hydrodynamic size and magnetization volume. Moreover, we also briefly discussed the importance of magnetoshape anisotropy related to particle design aspect of magnetophoretic systems. Next, we illustrated the need for integration between device and particle design using microscale applications of magnetophoretic systems, include magnetic tweezers and microfluidic systems, as our working example. On the basis of our discussion, we highlighted several promising examples of microscale magnetophoretic systems which greatly utilized the interplay between device and particle design. Further, we concluded the review with several factors that possibly resulted in the lack of research efforts related to device and particle design integration.
