Research Progress in Composite Materials for Photocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation

Ammonia is an essential component of modern chemical products and the building unit of natural life molecules. The Haber-Bosch (H-B) process is mainly used in the ammonia synthesis process in the industry. In this process, nitrogen and hydrogen react to produce ammonia with metal catalysts under high temperatures and pressure. However, the H-B process consumes a lot of energy and simultaneously emits greenhouse gases. In the "double carbon" effect, to promote the combination of photocatalytic technology and artificial nitrogen fixation, the development of green synthetic reactions has been widely discussed. Using an inexhaustible supply of sunlight as a power source, researchers have used photocatalysts to reduce nitrogen to ammonia, which is energy-dense and easy to store and transport. This process completes the conversion from light energy to chemical energy. At the same time, it achieves zero carbon emissions, reducing energy consumption and environmental pollution in industrial ammonia synthesis from the source. The application of photocatalytic technology in the nitrogen cycle has become one of the research hotspots in the new energy field. This article provides a classification of and an introduction to nitrogen-fixing photocatalysts reported in recent years and prospects the future development trends in this field.

Advances in Semiconductor-Based Nanocomposite Photo(electro)catalysts for Nitrogen Reduction to Ammonia

Photo(electro)catalytic nitrogen fixation technology is a promising ammonia synthesis technology using clean solar and electric energy as the driving energy. Abundant nitrogen and water as raw materials uphold the principle of green and sustainable development. However, the generally low efficiency of the nitrogen reduction reaction has seriously restricted the application and development of this technology. The paper introduces the nitrogen reduction process and discusses the main challenges and differences in the current photo(electro)catalytic nitrogen fixation systems. It focuses on promoting the adsorption and activation of N2 and the resolution and diffusion of NH3 generated. In recent years, reviews of the modification strategies of semiconductor materials in light of the typical cases of nitrogen fixation have been reported in the literature. Finally, the future development trend of this field is analyzed and prospected.

Catalytic Removal of NOx on Ceramic Foam-Supported ZnO and TiO2 Nanorods Ornamented with W and V Oxides

Energy consumption steadily increases and energy production is associated with many environmental risks, e.g., generating the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions. The primary gas pollution concern is CO2, CH4, and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Environmental catalysis plays a pivotal role in NOx mitigation (DeNOx). This study investigated, for the first time, a collection of ceramic foams as potential catalyst support for selective catalytic NOx reduction (SCR). Ceramic foams could be an attractive support option for NOx removal. However, we should functionalize the surface of raw foams for such applications. A library of ceramic SiC, Al2O3, and ZrO2 foams ornamented with nanorod ZnO and TiO2 as W and V oxide support was obtained for the first time. We characterized the surface layer coating structure using the XPS, XRF and SEM, and TEM microscopy to optimize the W to V molar ratio and examine NO2 mitigation as the SCR model, which was tested only very rarely. Comparing TiO2 and ZnO systems reveals that the SCR conversion on ZnO appeared superior vs. the conversion on TiO2, while the SiC-supported catalysts were less efficient than Al2O3 and ZrO2-supported catalysts. The energy bands in optical spectra correlate with the observed activity rank.

Fabrication of visible-light response cadmium sulfide modified superhydrophobic surface for water resource remediation

Widespread concern has been attached to the frequent occurrence of pollution by oil slicks and water-soluble pollutants in recent years. The semiconductor photocatalysis is applied to sewage treatment owing to the advantages of energy-conserving and environmental protection. However, its application is limited by the defects of not solving oil slicks and the hard recyclability. In this paper, the high specific surface area and rod-shaped CdS were prepared using template and alkali-treated methods. Next, the alkylated SiO₂and alkali-treated CdS were deposited on pure fabric by physical deposition to prepare the multifunctional superhydrophobic fabric. The specific surface area and morphology of alkali-treated CdS were tested by BET specific surface area test and field emission scanning electron microscope. Besides, oil/water separation, water contact angle, and stability test experiments were performed to determine the superhydrophobic performance. Photocatalysis degradation efficiency and cycle degradation stability of multifunctional fabric were characterized by photocatalysis degradation Rh B experiment. Consequently, the alkali-treated CdS displays a high specific surface up to 343 m²g^-1. The multifunctional fabric presents excellent superhydrophobic performance with the water contact angle up to 155°. Meanwhile, the water contact angle of multifunctional fabric is always over 150° under various circumstances (acid-base corrosion, soaking time at 100 °C and frictional numbers), indicating that the multifunctional fabric has excellent superhydrophobic stability. Moreover, the fabric also exhibits outstanding photocatalysis performance (the degradation efficiency is 94% after 3 cycles). Our work provides a feasible method for addressing oil slicks on water surface and degrading water-soluble pollutants with extensive application prospects in water resource remediation.
