Advances of Transition Metal-Based Electrochemical Non-enzymatic Glucose Sensors for Glucose Analysis: A Review

Glucose concentration is a crucial parameter for assessing human health. Over recent years, non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors have drawn considerable attention due to their substantial progress. This review explores the common mechanism behind the transition metal-based electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose molecules through classical electrocatalytic frameworks like the Pletcher model and the Hydrous Oxide-Adatom Mediator model (IHOAM), as well as the redox reactions at the transition metal centers. It further compiles the electrochemical characterization techniques, associated formulas, and their ensuing conclusions pertinent to transition metal-based non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors. Subsequently, the review covers the latest advancements in the field of transition metal-based active materials and support materials used in non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors in the last decade (2014-2023). Additionally, it presents a comprehensive classification of representative studies according to the active metal catalysts components involved.

UiO-66-Derived PBA Composite as Multifunctional Electrochemical Non-Enzymatic Sensor Realizing High-Performance Detection of Hydrogen Peroxide and Glucose

In this work, a highly efficient multifunctional non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor is successfully fabricated based on a facile two-step synthetic strategy. It resolves two important challenges of poor stability and low reproducibility compared to conventional electrochemical enzyme-based sensors. Herein, a metal-organic framework (UiO-66) is selected as a sacrificial template to construct the corresponding Prussian blue analogue (PBA) target to improve its stability and conductivity, namely, PBA/UiO-66/NF. Target PBA/UiO-66/NF exhibits excellent electrochemical sensing performance as hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and glucose sensors with ultrahigh sensitivity of up to 1903 μA mM^-1 cm^-2 for H₂O₂ and 22,800 μA mM^-1 cm^-2 for glucose, as well as a very low detection limit of 0.02 μM (S/N = 3) for H₂O₂ and 0.28 μM for glucose. Especially, extremely high stability can be observed, which will be beneficial for practical application.

Synergistic Effect of Composite Nickel Phosphide Nanoparticles and Carbon Fiber on the Enhancement of Salivary Enzyme-Free Glucose Sensing

An electrospinning method was used for the preparation of an in situ composite based on Ni₂P nanoparticles and carbon fiber (FC). The material was tested for the first time against direct glucose oxidation reaction. The Ni₂P nanoparticles were distributed homogeneously throughout the carbon fibers with a composition determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of 40 wt% Ni₂P and 60 wt% carbon fiber without impurities in the sample. The electrochemical measurement results indicate that the GCE/FC/Ni₂P in situ sensor exhibits excellent catalytic activity compared to the GCE/Ni₂P and GCE/FC/Ni₂P ex situ electrodes. The GCE/FC/Ni₂P in situ sensor presents a sensitivity of 1050 µAmM^-1cm^-2 in the range of 5-208 µM and a detection limit of 0.25 µM. The sensor was applied for glucose detection in artificial saliva, with a low interference observed from normally coexisting electroactive species. In conclusion, our sensor represents a novel and analytical competitive alternative for the development of non-enzymatic glucose sensors in the future.

Synthesis of Bimetallic Ni-Co Phosphide Nanosheets for Electrochemical Non-Enzymatic H2O2 Sensing

NiCoP nanosheets (NSs) were successfully synthesized using the hydrothermal and high-temperature phosphorization process. The obtained NiCoP NSs were immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and used to construct a novel sensing platform for electrochemical non-enzymatic H₂O₂ sensing. Physicochemical characteristics of NiCoP NSs were obtained by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), field-emission transmission electron microscope (FETEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In addition, the electrochemical properties of NiCoP NSs were obtained by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) towards the non-enzymatic detection of H₂O₂. FESEM and FETEM images provided a morphological insight (the unique nanosheets morphology of NiCoP) that could expose more active sites to promote mass/charge transport at the electrode/electrolyte interface. XRD and XPS results also confirmed the crystalline nature of the NiCoP nanosheets and the coexistence of multiple transitional metal oxidation states in NiCoP nanosheets. These unique physicochemical characteristics had a degree of contribution to ensuring enhancement in the electrochemical behavior. As a result, the synthesized NiCoP NSs composed of intercalated nanosheets, as well as the synergistic interaction between bimetallic Ni/Co and P atoms exhibited excellent electrocatalytical activity towards H₂O₂ electroreduction at neutral medium. As the results showed, the electrochemical sensing based on NiCoP NSs displayed a linear range of 0.05~4 mM, a sensitivity of 225.7 μA mM^-1 cm^-2, a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.190 μM, and good selectivity. It was concluded that NiCoP NSs-based electrochemical sensing might open new opportunities for future construction of H₂O₂ sensing platforms.
