Novel sulfur-doped single-ion conducting multi-block copolymer electrolyte

Solid-state lithium batteries are considered one of the most promising candidates for future electrochemical energy storage. However, both inorganic solid electrolytes (such as oxide-based or sulfide-based materials) and polymer electrolytes still have to overcome several challenges to replace the currently used liquid organic electrolytes. An increasingly adopted approach to overcome these challenges relies on the combination of different electrolyte systems. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of a novel sulfur-doped single-ion conducting multi-block copolymer (SIC-BCE) system. This SIC-BCE may serve as interlayer between the electrodes and the sulfidic electrolyte such as Li₆PS₅Cl, thus benefitting of the high ionic conductivity of the latter and the favorable interfacial contact and electrochemical stability of the polymer. The polymer shows excellent ionic conductivity when swollen with ethylene carbonate and allows for stable stripping/plating of lithium, accompanied by a suitable electrochemical stability towards reduction and oxidation. First tests in symmetric Cu|SIC-BCE|Li₆PS₅Cl|SIC-BCE|Cu cells confirm the general suitability of the polymer to stabilize the electrode|electrolyte interface by preventing the direct contact of the sulfidic electrolyte with, e.g., metallic copper foils.

Bacteria cellulose framework-supported solid composite polymer electrolytes for ambient-temperature lithium metal batteries

Composite polymer electrolyte (CPE) films with high room temperature ionic conductivity are urgently needed for the practical application of high-safety solid-state batteries (SSBs). Here, a flexible polymer-polymer CPE thin film reinforced by a three-dimensional (3D) bacterial cellulose (BC) framework derived from natural BC hydrogel was prepared via thein situphoto-polymerization method. The BC film was utilized as the supporting matrix to ensure high flexibility and mechanical strength. The BC-CPE attained a high room temperature ionic conductivity of 1.3 × 10^-4S cm^-1. The Li∣BC-CPE∣Li symmetric cell manifested stable cycles of more than 1200 h. The LCO∣BC-CPE∣Li full cell attained an initial discharge specific capacity of 128.7 mAh g^-1with 82.6% discharge capacity retention after 150 cycles at 0.2 C under room temperature. The proposed polymer-polymer CPE configuration represents a promising route for manufacturing environmental SSBs, especially since cellulose biomaterials are abundant in nature.

Influence of Polymer Backbone Fluorination on the Electrochemical Behavior of Single-Ion Conducting Multiblock Copolymer Electrolytes

The presence of fluorine, especially in the electrolyte, frequently has a beneficial effect on the performance of lithium batteries owing to, for instance, the stabilization of the interfaces and interphases with the positive and negative electrodes. However, the presence of fluorine is also associated with reduced recyclability and low biodegradability. Herein, we present a single-ion conducting multiblock copolymer electrolyte comprising a fluorine-free backbone and compare it with the fluorinated analogue reported earlier. Following a comprehensive physicochemical and electrochemical characterization of the copolymer with the fluorine-free backbone, the focus of the comparison with the fluorinated analogue was particularly on the electrochemical stability toward oxidation and reduction as well as the reactions occurring at the interface with the lithium-metal electrode. To deconvolute the impact of the fluorine in the ionic side chain and the copolymer backbone, suitable model compounds were identified and studied experimentally and theoretically. The results show that the absence of fluorine in the backbone has little impact on the basic electrochemical properties, such as the ionic conductivity, but severely affects the electrochemical stability and interfacial stability. The results highlight the need for a very careful design of the whole polymer for each desired application, essentially, just like for liquid electrolytes.

Preparing Well-Defined Polyacrylamide-b-Polycarbonate by Integrating Photoiniferter Polymerization and TBD-Catalyzed ROP

The dual-initiator technique allows the polymerization of different monomers from orthogonal polymerization mechanisms to obtain block copolymers (BCPs). In this study, it is attempted to combine photoiniferter living free radical polymerization and organocatalytic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) to design a hydroxyl-functionalized carbamodithioate, i.e., 4-(hydroxymethyl)benzyl diethylcarbamodithioate (HBDC), which can integrate photoiniferter polymerization of acrylamide monomers and ROP of cyclic carbonates. As a proof of concept, the monomer applicability is further extended to acrylates and lactones. The results confirm that the two polymerization systems are experimentally compatible in a stepwise sequence as well as in a simultaneous one-pot process to synthesize BCPs. It is reasonable to assume that HBDC can allow for simple and efficient one-pot access to well-defined BCPs from a larger range of monomers, which is more advantageous from the operational, economical, and environmental points of view.
