Noise-based correction for electrical impedance tomography

Objective.Noisy measurements frequently cause noisy and inaccurate images in impedance imaging. No post-processing technique exists to calculate the propagation of measurement noise and use this to suppress noise in the image. The objectives of this work were (1) to develop a post-processing method for noise-based correction (NBC) in impedance tomography, (2) to test whether NBC improves image quality in electrical impedance tomography (EIT), (3) to determine whether it is preferable to use correlated or uncorrelated noise for NBC, (4) to test whether NBC works within vivodata and (5) to test whether NBC is stable across model and perturbation geometries.Approach.EIT was performedin silicoin a 2D homogeneous circular domain and an anatomically realistic, heterogeneous 3D human head domain for four perturbations and 25 noise levels in each case. This was validated by performing EIT for four perturbations in a circular, saline tank in 2D as well as a human head-shaped saline tank with a realistic skull-like layer in 3D. Images were assessed on the error in the weighted spatial variance (WSV) with respect to the true, target image. The effect of NBC was also tested forin vivoEIT data of lung ventilation in a human thorax and cortical activity in a rat brain.Main results.On visual inspection, NBC maintained or increased image quality for all perturbations and noise levels in 2D and 3D, both experimentally andin silico. Analysis of the WSV showed that NBC significantly improved the WSV in nearly all cases. When the WSV was inferior with NBC, this was either visually imperceptible or a transformation between noisy reconstructions. Forin vivodata, NBC improved image quality in all cases and preserved the expected shape of the reconstructed perturbation.Significance.In practice, uncorrelated NBC performed better than correlated NBC and is recommended as a general-use post-processing technique in EIT.

Advances of deep learning in electrical impedance tomography image reconstruction

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) has been widely used in biomedical research because of its advantages of real-time imaging and nature of being non-invasive and radiation-free. Additionally, it can reconstruct the distribution or changes in electrical properties in the sensing area. Recently, with the significant advancements in the use of deep learning in intelligent medical imaging, EIT image reconstruction based on deep learning has received considerable attention. This study introduces the basic principles of EIT and summarizes the application progress of deep learning in EIT image reconstruction with regards to three aspects: a single network reconstruction, deep learning combined with traditional algorithm reconstruction, and multiple network hybrid reconstruction. In future, optimizing the datasets may be the main challenge in applying deep learning for EIT image reconstruction. Adopting a better network structure, focusing on the joint reconstruction of EIT and traditional algorithms, and using multimodal deep learning-based EIT may be the solution to existing problems. In general, deep learning offers a fresh approach for improving the performance of EIT image reconstruction and could be the foundation for building an intelligent integrated EIT diagnostic system in the future.

Suppressing interferences of EIT on synchronous recording EEG based on comb filter for seizure detection

Background and objective

The purpose of this study was to eliminate the interferences of electrical impedance tomography (EIT) on synchronous recording electroencephalography (EEG) for seizure detection.

Methods

The simulated EIT signal generated by COMSOL Multiphysics was superimposed on the clinical EEG signal obtained from the CHB-MIT Scalp EEG Database, and then the spectrum features of superimposed mixed signals were analyzed. According to the spectrum analysis, in addition to high-frequency interference at 51.2 kHz related to the drive current, there was also low-frequency interference caused by switching of electrode pairs, which were used to inject drive current. A low pass filter and a comb filter were used to suppress the high-frequency interference and low-frequency interference, respectively. Simulation results suggested the low-pass filter and comb filter working together effectively filtered out the interference of EIT on EEG in the process of synchronous monitoring.

Results

As a result, the normal EEG and epileptic EEG could be recognized effectively. Pearson correlation analysis further confirmed the interference of EIT on EEG was effectively suppressed.

Conclusions

This study provides a simple and effective interference suppression method for the synchronous monitoring of EIT and EEG, which could be served as a reference for the synchronous monitoring of EEG and other medical electromagnetic devices.

A pilot study of contrast-enhanced electrical impedance tomography for real-time imaging of cerebral perfusion

Background

Real-time detection of cerebral blood perfusion can prevent adverse reactions, such as cerebral infarction and neuronal apoptosis. Our previous clinical trial have shown that the infusion of therapeutic fluid can significantly change the impedance distribution in the brain. However, whether this alteration implicates the cerebral blood perfusion remains unclear. To explore the feasibility of monitoring cerebral blood perfusion, the present pilot study established a novel cerebral contrast-enhanced electrical impedance tomography (C-EIT) technique.

Materials and methods

Rabbits were randomly divided into two groups: the internal carotid artery non-occlusion (ICAN) and internal carotid artery occlusion (ICAO) groups. Both of groups were injected with glucose, an electrical impedance-enhanced contrast agent, through the right internal carotid artery under EIT monitoring. The C-EIT reconstruction images of the rabbits brain were analyzed according to the collected raw data. The paired and independent t-tests were used to analyze the remodeled impedance values of the left and right cerebral hemispheres within and between studied groups, respectively. Moreover, pathological examinations of brain were performed immediately after C-EIT monitoring.

Results

According to the reconstructed images, the impedance value of the left cerebral hemisphere in the ICAN group did not change significantly, whereas the impedance value of the right cerebral hemisphere gradually increased, reaching a peak at approximately 10 s followed by gradually decreased. In the ICAO group, the impedance values of both cerebral hemispheres increased gradually and then began to decrease after reaching the peak value. According to the paired t-test, there was a significant difference (P < 0.001) in the remodeling impedance values between the left and right hemispheres in the ICAN group, and there was also a significant difference (P < 0.001) in the ICAO group. According to the independent t-test, there was a significant difference (P < 0.001) of the left hemispheres between the ICAN and ICAO groups.

Conclusion

The cerebral C-EIT proposed in this pilot study can reflect cerebral blood perfusion. This method has potential in various applications in the brain in the future, including disease progression monitoring, collateral circulation judgment, tumor-specific detection, and brain function research.

Animal models for epileptic foci localization, seizure detection, and prediction by electrical impedance tomography

Surgical resection of lesions and closed-loop suppression are the two main treatment options for patients with refractory epilepsy whose symptoms cannot be managed with medicines. Unfortunately, failures in foci localization and seizure prediction are constraining these treatments. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT), sensitive to impedance changes caused by blood flow or cell swelling, is a potential new way to locate epileptic foci and predict seizures. Animal validation is a necessary research process before EIT can be used in clinical practice, but it is unclear which among the many animal epilepsy models is most suited to this task. The selection of an animal model of epilepsy that is similar to human seizures and can be adapted to EIT is important for the accuracy and reliability of EIT research results. This study provides an overview of the animal models of epilepsy that have been used in research on the use of EIT to locate the foci or predict seizures; discusses the advantages and disadvantages of these models regarding inducement by chemical convulsant and electrical stimulation; and finally proposes optimal animal models of epilepsy to obtain more convincing research results for foci localization and seizure prediction by EIT. The ultimate goal of this study is to facilitate the development of new treatments for patients with refractory epilepsy. Electrical Impedance Tomography Based on Grey Wolf Optimized Radial Basis Function Neural Network

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive, radiation-free imaging technique with a lot of promise in clinical monitoring. However, since EIT image reconstruction is a non-linear, pathological, and ill-posed issue, the quality of the reconstructed images needs constant improvement. To increase image reconstruction accuracy, a grey wolf optimized radial basis function neural network (GWO-RBFNN) is proposed in this paper. The grey wolf algorithm is used to optimize the weights in the radial base neural network, determine the mapping between the weights and the initial position of the grey wolf, and calculate the optimal position of the grey wolf to find the optimal solution for the weights, thus improving the image resolution of EIT imaging. COMSOL and MATLAB were used to numerically simulate the EIT system with 16 electrodes, producing 1700 simulation samples. The standard Landweber, RBFNN, and GWO-RBFNN approaches were used to train the sets separately. The obtained image correlation coefficient (ICC) of the test set after training with GWO-RBFNN is 0.9551. After adding 30, 40, and 50 dB of Gaussian white noise to the test set, the attained ICCs with GWO-RBFNN are 0.8966, 0.9197, and 0.9319, respectively. The findings reveal that the proposed GWO-RBFNN approach outperforms the existing methods when it comes to image reconstruction.

Advances in electrical impedance tomography-based brain imaging

Novel advances in the field of brain imaging have enabled the unprecedented clinical application of various imaging modalities to facilitate disease diagnosis and treatment. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a functional imaging technique that measures the transfer impedances between electrodes on the body surface to estimate the spatial distribution of electrical properties of tissues. EIT offers many advantages over other neuroimaging technologies, which has led to its potential clinical use. This qualitative review provides an overview of the basic principles, algorithms, and system composition of EIT. Recent advances in the field of EIT are discussed in the context of epilepsy, stroke, brain injuries and edema, and other brain diseases. Further, we summarize factors limiting the development of brain EIT and highlight prospects for the field. In epilepsy imaging, there have been advances in EIT imaging depth, from cortical to subcortical regions. In stroke research, a bedside EIT stroke monitoring system has been developed for clinical practice, and data support the role of EIT in multi-modal imaging for diagnosing stroke. Additionally, EIT has been applied to monitor the changes in brain water content associated with cerebral edema, enabling the early identification of brain edema and the evaluation of mannitol dehydration. However, anatomically realistic geometry, inhomogeneity, cranium completeness, anisotropy and skull type, etc., must be considered to improve the accuracy of EIT modeling. Thus, the further establishment of EIT as a mature and routine diagnostic technique will necessitate the accumulation of more supporting evidence.

A Dual-modal Imaging Method Combining Ultrasound and Electromagnetism for Simultaneous Measurement of Tissue Elasticity and Electrical Conductivity

The mechanical and electrical properties of soft tissues are relative to soft tissues' pathological state. Modern medical imaging devices have shown a trend to multi-modal imaging, which will provide complementary functional information to improve the accuracy of disease diagnosis. However, no method or system can simultaneously measure the mechanical and electrical properties of the soft tissue. In this study, we proposed a novel dual-modal imaging method integrated by shear wave elasticity imaging (SWEI) and Magneto-acousto-electrical tomography (MAET) to measure soft tissue's elasticity and conductivity simultaneously. A dual-modal imaging system based on a linear array transducer is built, and the imaging performances of MAET and SWEI were respectively evaluated by phantoms experiment and \textit{in vitro} experiment. Conductivity phantom experiments show that the MAET in this dual-modal system can image conductivity gradient as low as 0.4 S/m. The phantom experiments show that the reconstructed 2-D elasticity maps of the phantoms with inclusions with a diameter larger than 5 mm are relatively accurate. \textit{In vitro} experiments show that the elasticity parameter can significantly distinguish the changes in tissue before and after heating. This study first proposes a method that can simultaneously obtain tissue elasticity and electrical conductivity to the best of our knowledge. Although this paper just carried out the proof of concept experiments of the new method, it demonstrates great potential for disease diagnosis in the future.
