The challenge of spin-orbit-tuned ground states in iridates: a key issues review

Map of Crystal-Field Effects in Correlated Layered t_{2g}^{n} Perovskites

Correlated metallic layered t_{2g}^{n} perovskites are intensively studied and yet their low-energy electronic properties remain hotly debated. Important elements of the puzzle, beside the on-site Coulomb repulsion, are the tetragonal crystal-field splitting and the spin-orbit interaction. Here, we show that they control the electronic properties principally via form and occupations of natural orbitals. We discuss consequences for shape and topology of the Fermi surface, effective masses, and metal-insulator transition, building a map of crystal-field effects. The emerging picture captures electronic-structure trends in this family of systems within a single framework.

Perspective: probing elasto-quantum materials with x-ray techniques andin situanisotropic strain

Anisotropic lattice deformation plays an important role in the quantum mechanics of solid state physics. The possibility of mediating the competition and cooperation among different order parameters by applyingin situstrain/stress on quantum materials has led to discoveries of a variety of elasto-quantum effects on emergent phenomena. It has become increasingly critical to have the capability of combining thein situstrain tuning with x-ray techniques, especially those based on synchrotrons, to probe the microscopic elasto-responses of the lattice, spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedom. Herein, we briefly review the recent studies that embarked on utilizing elasto-x-ray characterizations on representative material systems and demonstrated the emerging opportunities enabled by this method. With that, we further discuss the promising prospect in this rising area of quantum materials research and the bright future of elasto-x-ray techniques.

Evaluation of Sputtering Processes in Strontium Iridate Thin Films

The growth of epitaxial thin films from the Ruddlesden-Popper series of strontium iridates by magnetron sputtering is analyzed. It was found that, even using a non-stoichiometric target, the films formed under various conditions were consistently of the perovskite-like n = ∞ SrIrO3 phase, with no evidence of other RP series phases. A detailed inspection of the temperature-oxygen phase diagram underscored that kinetics mechanisms prevail over thermodynamics considerations. The analysis of the angular distribution of sputtered iridium and strontium species indicated clearly different spatial distribution patterns. Additionally, significant backsputtering was detected at elevated temperatures. Thus, it is assumed that the interplay between these two kinetic phenomena is at the origin of the preferential nucleation of the SrIrO3 phase. In addition, strategies for controlling cation stoichiometry off-axis have also been explored. Finally, the long-term stability of the films has been demonstrated.

Extraordinary Magnetic Response of an Anisotropic 2D Antiferromagnet via Site Dilution

A prominent characteristic of 2D magnetic systems is the enhanced spin fluctuations, which reduce the ordering temperature. We report that a magnetic field of only 1000th of the Heisenberg superexchange interaction can induce a crossover, which for practical purposes is the effective ordering transition, at temperatures about 6 times the Néel transition in a site-diluted two-dimensional anisotropic quantum antiferromagnet. Such a strong magnetic response is enabled because the system directly enters the antiferromagnetically ordered state from the isotropic disordered state, skipping the intermediate anisotropic stage. The underlying mechanism is achieved on a pseudospin-half square lattice realized in the [(SrIrO3)1/(SrTiO3)2] superlattice thin film that is designed to linearly couple the staggered magnetization to external magnetic fields by virtue of the rotational symmetry-preserving Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Our model analysis shows that the skipping of the anisotropic regime despite finite anisotropy is due to the enhanced isotropic fluctuations under moderate dilution.

Emergent quantum phenomena in atomically engineered iridate heterostructures

Over the last few years, researches in iridates have developed into an exciting field with the discovery of numerous emergent phenomena, interesting physics, and intriguing functionalities. Among the studies, iridate-based artificial structures play a crucial role owing to their extreme flexibility and tunability in lattice symmetry, chemical composition, and crystal dimensionality. In this article, we present an overview of the recent progress regarding iridate-based artificial structures. We first explicitly introduce several essential concepts in iridates. Then, we illustrate important findings on representative SrIrO3/SrTiO3 superlattices, heterostructures comprised of SrIrO3 and magnetic oxides, and their response to external electric-field stimuli. Finally, we comment on existing problems and promising future directions in this exciting field.

In-gap states and strain-tuned band convergence in layered structure trivalent iridate K0.75Na0.25IrO2

Iridium oxides (iridates) provide a good platform to study the delicate interplay between spin-orbit coupling (SOC) interactions, electron correlation effects, Hund's coupling and lattice degrees of freedom. An overwhelming number of investigations primarily focus on tetravalent (Ir⁴⁺, 5d⁵) and pentavalent (Ir⁵⁺, 5d⁴) iridates, and far less attention has been paid to iridates with other valence states. Here, we pay our attention to a less-explored trivalent (Ir³⁺, 5d⁶) iridate, K_0.75Na_0.25IrO₂, crystallizing in a triangular lattice with edge-sharing IrO₆ octahedra and alkali metal ion intercalated [IrO₂]^- layers, offering a good platform to explore the interplay between different degrees of freedom. We theoretically determine the preferred occupied positions of the alkali metal ions from energetic viewpoints and reproduce the experimentally observed semiconducting behavior and nonmagnetic (NM) properties of K_0.75Na_0.25IrO₂. The SOC interactions play a critical role in the band dispersion, resulting in NM J_eff = 0 states. More intriguingly, our electronic structure not only uncovers the presence of intrinsic in-gap states and nearly free electron character for the conduction band minimum, but also explains the abnormally low activation energy in K_0.75Na_0.25IrO₂. Particularly, the band edge can be effectively modulated by mechanical strain, and the in-gap states feature enhanced band-convergence characteristics by 6% compressive strain, which will greatly enhance the electrical conductivity of K_0.75Na_0.25IrO₂. The present work sheds new light on the unconventional electronic structures of trivalent iridates, indicating their promising application as a nanoelectronic and thermoelectric material, which will attract extensive interest and stimulate experimental works to further understand the unprecedented electronic structures and exploit potential applications of the triangular trivalent iridate.

Synthesis and structural link to the electronic and magneto-transport properties of spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr2IrO4

We investigate the effect of sample preparation conditions on the link between the structural and physical properties of polycrystalline spin-orbit Mott insulator, Sr₂IrO₄. The samples were prepared in two batches. With the first batch prepared as per the commonly adopted procedure in literature and the second batch prepared adopting the same procedure as the first batch but with an additional annealing in vacuum. Interestingly, our results show that without change in the value of the Curie temperature (T_C), there occurs increase in the value of magnetization, resistivity, magneto-resistance (MR) and an increase in temperature range of stabilization of the canted antiferromagnetic structure. The temperature behaviour of the difference in the irreversible magnetization between the samples is in line with the difference in the Ir-O-Ir in-plane bond angle. At low temperatures, the conduction mechanism in the first batch of the sample is mainly governed by disorder while in the case of the other sample it is of Arrhenius type. The magneto-transport results have shown its strong link with the disorder and structural results. Although the nature and mechanism of the disorder needs to be investigated further, the present results throw light on the role of disorder and its connectivity between the structure and physical properties to understand its complex behaviours.

Controllable Emergent Spatial Spin Modulation in Sr_{2}IrO_{4} by In Situ Shear Strain

Symmetric anisotropic interaction can be ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic at the same time but for different crystallographic axes. We show that the competition of anisotropic interactions of orthogonal irreducible representations can be a general route to obtain new exotic magnetic states. We demonstrate it here by observing the emergence of a continuously tunable 12-layer spatial spin modulation when distorting the square-lattice planes in the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Sr_{2}IrO_{4} under in situ shear strain. This translation-symmetry-breaking phase is a result of an unusual strain-activated anisotropic interaction which is at the fourth order and competing with the inherent quadratic anisotropic interaction. Such a mechanism of competing anisotropy is distinct from that among the ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and/or the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and it could be widely applicable and highly controllable in low-dimensional magnets.

Enhanced magnetism and suppressed magnetoelastic coupling induced by electron doping in Ca1-xYxMnReO6

The Ca₂MnReO₆double perovskite is a spin-orbit-assisted Mott insulator with exotic magnetic properties, including a largely non-collinear Mn²⁺spin arrangement and nearly orthogonal coupling between such spins and the much smaller Re 5dmagnetic moments. Here, the electron-doped compound Ca_1-xY_xMnReO₆(x= 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) is reported and a detailed investigation is conducted forx= 0.3. Neutron and x-ray powder diffraction confirm that nearly full chemical order is maintained at the Mn and Re sites under the Y substitution at the Ca site. X-ray absorption measurements and an analysis of the Mn-O/Re-O bond distances show that the Mn oxidation state remains stable at +2 whereas Re is reduced upon doping. The electron doping increases the magnetic ordering temperature fromT_c= 121 to 150 K and also enhances significantly the ferromagnetic component of the Mn spins at the expense of the antiferromagnetic component at the base temperature (T= 3 K). The lattice parameter anomalies atT_cobserved in the parent compound are suppressed by the electron doping. The possible reasons for the enhanced magnetism and the suppressed magnetoelastic coupling in Ca_1.7Y_0.3MnReO₆are discussed.

Antiferromagnetic excitonic insulator state in Sr3Ir2O7

Excitonic insulators are usually considered to form via the condensation of a soft charge mode of bound electron-hole pairs. This, however, presumes that the soft exciton is of spin-singlet character. Early theoretical considerations have also predicted a very distinct scenario, in which the condensation of magnetic excitons results in an antiferromagnetic excitonic insulator state. Here we report resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements of Sr₃Ir₂O₇. By isolating the longitudinal component of the spectra, we identify a magnetic mode that is well-defined at the magnetic and structural Brillouin zone centers, but which merges with the electronic continuum in between these high symmetry points and which decays upon heating concurrent with a decrease in the material’s resistivity. We show that a bilayer Hubbard model, in which electron-hole pairs are bound by exchange interactions, consistently explains all the electronic and magnetic properties of Sr₃Ir₂O₇ indicating that this material is a realization of the long-predicted antiferromagnetic excitonic insulator phase.

Antiferromagnetic excitonic insulators are a distinct form of excitonic insulator, in which electrons and holes are bound by magnetic exchange rather than Coulomb attraction. Here, Mazzone et al. show, using X-ray scattering, that Sr3Ir2O7 realizes this particular state.

Metastable Kitaev Magnets

Nearly two decades ago, Alexei Kitaev proposed a model for spin-1/2 particles with bond-directional interactions on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice which had the potential to host a quantum spin-liquid ground state. This work initiated numerous investigations to design and synthesize materials that would physically realize the Kitaev Hamiltonian. The first generation of such materials, such as Na2IrO3, α-Li2IrO3, and α-RuCl3, revealed the presence of non-Kitaev interactions such as the Heisenberg and off-diagonal exchange. Both physical pressure and chemical doping were used to tune the relative strength of the Kitaev and competing interactions; however, little progress was made towards achieving a purely Kitaev system. Here, we review the recent breakthrough in modifying Kitaev magnets via topochemical methods that has led to the second generation of Kitaev materials. We show how structural modifications due to the topotactic exchange reactions can alter the magnetic interactions in favor of a quantum spin-liquid phase.

Imaging antiferromagnetic domain fluctuations and the effect of atomic scale disorder in a doped spin-orbit Mott insulator

Correlated oxides can exhibit complex magnetic patterns. Understanding how magnetic domains form in the presence of disorder and their robustness to temperature variations has been of particular interest, but atomic scale insight has been limited. We use spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy to image the evolution of spin-resolved modulations originating from antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering in a spin-orbit Mott insulator perovskite iridate Sr₃Ir₂O₇ as a function of chemical composition and temperature. We find that replacing only several percent of lanthanum for strontium leaves behind nanometer-scale AF puddles clustering away from lanthanum substitutions preferentially located in the middle strontium oxide layer. Thermal erasure and reentry into the low-temperature ground state leads to a spatial reorganization of the AF puddles, which nevertheless maintain scale-invariant fractal geometry in each configuration. Our experiments reveal multiple stable AF configurations at low temperature and shed light onto spatial fluctuations of the AF order around atomic scale disorder in electron-doped Sr₃Ir₂O₇.

Dimensionality-driven metal-insulator transition in spin-orbit-coupled IrO2

A metal-insulator transition is observed in spin-orbit-coupled IrO₂ thin films upon reduction of the film thickness. In the epitaxially grown samples, the critical thickness (t ∼ 1.5-2.2 nm) is found to depend on growth orientation (001), (100) or (110). Interestingly from the applied point of view, the insulating behavior is found even in polycrystalline ultrathin films. By analyzing the experimental electrical response with various theoretical models, we find good fits to the Efros-Shklovskii-VRH and the Arrhenius-type behaviors, which suggests an important role of electron correlations in determining the electrical properties of IrO₂. Our magnetic measurements also point to a significant role of magnetic order. Altogether, our results would point to a mixed Slater- and Mott-type of insulator.

Spin-orbit effects in pentavalent iridates: models and materials

Spin-orbit effects in heavy 5dtransition metal oxides, in particular, iridates, have received enormous current interest due to the prediction as well as the realization of a plethora of exotic and unconventional magnetic properties. While a bulk of these works are based on tetravalent iridates (d⁵), where the counter-intuitive insulating state of the rather extended 5dorbitals are explained by invoking strong spin-orbit coupling, the recent quest in iridate research has shifted to the other valencies of Ir, of which pentavalent iridates constitute a notable representative. In contrast to the tetravalent iridates, spin-orbit entangled electrons ind⁴systems are expected to be confined to theJ= 0 singlet state without any resultant moment or magnetic response. However, it has been recently predicted that, magnetism ind⁴systems may occur via magnetic condensation of excitations across spin-orbit-coupled states. In reality, the magnetism in Ir⁵⁺systems are often quite debatable both from theoretical as well as experimental point of view. Here we provide a comprehensive overview of the spin-orbit coupledd⁴model systems and its implications in the studied pentavalent iridates. In particular, we review here the current experimental and theoretical understanding of the double perovskite (A₂BYIrO₆,A= Sr, Ba,B= Y, Sc, Gd), 6H-perovskite (Ba₃MIr₂O₉,M= Zn, Mg, Sr, Ca), post-perovskite (NaIrO₃), and hexagonal (Sr₃MIrO₆) iridates, along with a number of open questions that require future investigation.

Hidden Charge Order in an Iron Oxide Square-Lattice Compound

Since the discovery of charge disproportionation in the FeO_{2} square-lattice compound Sr_{3}Fe_{2}O_{7} by Mössbauer spectroscopy more than fifty years ago, the spatial ordering pattern of the disproportionated charges has remained "hidden" to conventional diffraction probes, despite numerous x-ray and neutron scattering studies. We have used neutron Larmor diffraction and Fe K-edge resonant x-ray scattering to demonstrate checkerboard charge order in the FeO_{2} planes that vanishes at a sharp second-order phase transition upon heating above 332 K. Stacking disorder of the checkerboard pattern due to frustrated interlayer interactions broadens the corresponding superstructure reflections and greatly reduces their amplitude, thus explaining the difficulty of detecting them by conventional probes. We discuss the implications of these findings for research on "hidden order" in other materials.

Coupled spin-orbital fluctuations in a three orbital model for 4dand 5doxides with electron fillingsn3, 4, 5-application to NaOsO3, Ca2RuO4and Sr2IrO4

A unified approach is presented for investigating coupled spin-orbital fluctuations within a realistic three-orbital model for strongly spin-orbit coupled systems with electron fillingsn= 3, 4, 5 in thet_2gsector ofd_yz,d_xz,d_xyorbitals. A generalized fluctuation propagator is constructed which is consistent with the generalized self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation where all Coulomb interaction contributions involving orbital diagonal and off-diagonal spin and charge condensates are included. Besides the low-energy magnon, intermediate-energy orbiton and spin-orbiton, and high-energy spin-orbit exciton modes, the generalized spectral function also shows other high-energy excitations such as the Hund's coupling induced gapped magnon modes. We relate the characteristic features of the coupled spin-orbital excitations to the complex magnetic behavior resulting from the interplay between electronic bands, spin-orbit coupling, Coulomb interactions, and structural distortion effects, as realized in the compounds NaOsO₃, Ca₂RuO₄, and Sr₂IrO₄.

Laser-induced transient magnons in Sr3Ir2O7 throughout the Brillouin zone

Although ultrafast manipulation of magnetism holds great promise for new physical phenomena and applications, targeting specific states is held back by our limited understanding of how magnetic correlations evolve on ultrafast timescales. Using ultrafast resonant inelastic X-ray scattering we demonstrate that femtosecond laser pulses can excite transient magnons at large wavevectors in gapped antiferromagnets and that they persist for several picoseconds, which is opposite to what is observed in nearly gapless magnets. Our work suggests that materials with isotropic magnetic interactions are preferred to achieve rapid manipulation of magnetism.

Advanced First-Principle Modeling of Relativistic Ruddlesden—Popper Strontium Iridates

In this review, we provide a survey of the application of advanced first-principle methods on the theoretical modeling and understanding of novel electronic, optical, and magnetic properties of the spin-orbit coupled Ruddlesden–Popper series of iridates Srn+1IrnO3n+1 (n = 1, 2, and ∞). After a brief description of the basic aspects of the adopted methods (noncollinear local spin density approximation plus an on-site Coulomb interaction (LSDA+U), constrained random phase approximation (cRPA), GW, and Bethe–Salpeter equation (BSE)), we present and discuss select results. We show that a detailed phase diagrams of the metal–insulator transition and magnetic phase transition can be constructed by inspecting the evolution of electronic and magnetic properties as a function of Hubbard U, spin–orbit coupling (SOC) strength, and dimensionality n, which provide clear evidence for the crucial role played by SOC and U in establishing a relativistic (Dirac) Mott–Hubbard insulating state in Sr2IrO4 and Sr3Ir2O7. To characterize the ground-state phases, we quantify the most relevant energy scales fully ab initio—crystal field energy, Hubbard U, and SOC constant of three compounds—and discuss the quasiparticle band structures in detail by comparing GW and LSDA+U data. We examine the different magnetic ground states of structurally similar n = 1 and n = 2 compounds and clarify that the origin of the in-plane canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) state of Sr2IrO4 arises from competition between isotropic exchange and Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (DM) interactions whereas the collinear AFM state of Sr3Ir2O7 is due to strong interlayer magnetic coupling. Finally, we report the dimensionality controlled metal–insulator transition across the series by computing their optical transitions and conductivity spectra at the GW+BSE level from the the quasi two-dimensional insulating n = 1 and 2 phases to the three-dimensional metallic n=∞ phase.

Honeycomb layered oxides: structure, energy storage, transport, topology and relevant insights

The advent of nanotechnology has hurtled the discovery and development of nanostructured materials with stellar chemical and physical functionalities in a bid to address issues in energy, environment, telecommunications and healthcare. In this quest, a class of two-dimensional layered materials consisting of alkali or coinage metal atoms sandwiched between slabs exclusively made of transition metal and chalcogen (or pnictogen) atoms arranged in a honeycomb fashion have emerged as materials exhibiting fascinatingly rich crystal chemistry, high-voltage electrochemistry, fast cation diffusion besides playing host to varied exotic electromagnetic and topological phenomena. Currently, with a niche application in energy storage as high-voltage materials, this class of honeycomb layered oxides serves as ideal pedagogical exemplars of the innumerable capabilities of nanomaterials drawing immense interest in multiple fields ranging from materials science, solid-state chemistry, electrochemistry and condensed matter physics. In this review, we delineate the relevant chemistry and physics of honeycomb layered oxides, and discuss their functionalities for tunable electrochemistry, superfast ionic conduction, electromagnetism and topology. Moreover, we elucidate the unexplored albeit vastly promising crystal chemistry space whilst outlining effective ways to identify regions within this compositional space, particularly where interesting electromagnetic and topological properties could be lurking within the aforementioned alkali and coinage-metal honeycomb layered oxide structures. We conclude by pointing towards possible future research directions, particularly the prospective realisation of Kitaev-Heisenberg-Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions with single crystals and Floquet theory in closely-related honeycomb layered oxide materials.

Giant isotropic magneto-thermal conductivity of metallic spin liquid candidate Pr2Ir2O7 with quantum criticality

Spin liquids are exotic states with no spontaneous symmetry breaking down to zero-temperature because of the highly entangled and fluctuating spins in frustrated systems. Exotic excitations like magnetic monopoles, visons, and photons may emerge from quantum spin ice states, a special kind of spin liquids in pyrochlore lattices. These materials usually are insulators, with an exception of the pyrochlore iridate Pr2Ir2O7, which was proposed as a metallic spin liquid located at a zero-field quantum critical point. Here we report the ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity measurements on Pr2Ir2O7. The Wiedemann-Franz law is verified at high fields and inferred at zero field, suggesting no breakdown of Landau quasiparticles at the quantum critical point, and the absence of mobile fermionic excitations. This result puts strong constraints on the description of the quantum criticality in Pr2Ir2O7. Unexpectedly, although the specific heats are anisotropic with respect to magnetic field directions, the thermal conductivities display the giant but isotropic response. This indicates that quadrupolar interactions and quantum fluctuations are important, which will help determine the true ground state of this material.

Comprehensive Electrical Control of Metamagnetic Transition of a Quasi-2D Antiferromagnet by In Situ Anisotropic Strain

Effective nonmagnetic control of the spin structure is at the forefront of the study for functional quantum materials. This study demonstrates that, by applying an anisotropic strain up to only 0.05%, the metamagnetic transition field of spin-orbit-coupled Mott insulator Sr₂ IrO₄ can be in situ modulated by almost 300%. Simultaneous measurements of resonant X-ray scattering and transport reveal that this drastic response originates from the complete strain-tuning of the transition between the spin-flop and spin-flip limits, and is always accompanied by large elastoconductance and magnetoconductance. This enables electrically controllable and electronically detectable metamagnetic switching, despite the antiferromagnetic insulating state. The obtained strain-magnetic field phase diagram reveals that C₄ -symmetry-breaking anisotropy is introduced by strain via pseudospin-lattice coupling, directly demonstrating the pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect of spin-orbit-coupled complex oxides. The extracted coupling strength is much weaker than the superexchange interactions, yet crucial for the spontaneous symmetry-breaking, affording the remarkably efficient strain-control.

Giant electron-phonon coupling of the breathing plane oxygen phonons in the dynamic stripe phase of [Formula: see text]

Doped antiferromagnets host a vast array of physical properties and learning how to control them is one of the biggest challenges of condensed matter physics. [Formula: see text] (LSNO) is a classic example of such a material. At low temperatures holes introduced via substitution of La by Sr segregate into lines to form boundaries between magnetically ordered domains in the form of stripes. The stripes become dynamic at high temperatures, but LSNO remains insulating presumably because an interplay between magnetic correlations and electron-phonon coupling localizes charge carriers. Magnetic degrees of freedom have been extensively investigated in this system, but phonons are almost completely unexplored. We searched for electron-phonon anomalies in LSNO by inelastic neutron scattering. Giant renormalization of plane Ni-O bond-stretching modes that modulate the volume around Ni appears on entering the dynamic charge stripe phase. Other phonons are a lot less sensitive to stripe melting. Dramatic overdamping of the breathing modes indicates that dynamic stripe phase may host small polarons. We argue that this feature sets electron-phonon coupling in nickelates apart from that in cuprates where breathing phonons are not overdamped and point out remarkable similarities with the colossal magnetoresistance manganites.

The Jeff = 1/2 Antiferromagnet Sr2 IrO4 : A Golden Avenue toward New Physics and Functions

Iridates have been providing a fertile ground for studying emergent phases of matter that arise from the delicate interplay of various fundamental interactions with approximate energy scale. Among these highly focused quantum materials, the perovskite Sr₂ IrO₄ , which belongs to the Ruddlesden-Popper series, stands out and has been intensively addressed in the last decade, since it hosts a novel J_eff = 1/2 state that is a profound manifestation of strong spin-orbit coupling. Moreover, the J_eff = 1/2 state represents a rare example of iridates that is better understood both theoretically and experimentally. Here, Sr₂ IrO₄ is taken as an example to review the recent advances of the J_eff = 1/2 state in two aspects: materials fundamentals and functionality potentials. In the fundamentals part, the basic issues for the layered canted antiferromagnetic order of the J_eff = 1/2 magnetic moments in Sr₂ IrO₄ are illustrated, and then the progress of the antiferromagnetic order modulation through diverse routes is highlighted. Subsequently, for the functionality potentials, fascinating properties such as atomic-scale giant magnetoresistance, anisotropic magnetoresistance, and nonvolatile memory, are addressed. To conclude, prospective remarks and an outlook are given.

Correlation-driven eightfold magnetic anisotropy in a two-dimensional oxide monolayer

Engineering magnetic anisotropy in two-dimensional systems has enormous scientific and technological implications. The uniaxial anisotropy universally exhibited by two-dimensional magnets has only two stable spin directions, demanding 180° spin switching between states. We demonstrate a previously unobserved eightfold anisotropy in magnetic SrRuO3 monolayers by inducing a spin reorientation in (SrRuO3)1/(SrTiO3) N superlattices, in which the magnetic easy axis of Ru spins is transformed from uniaxial 〈001〉 direction (N < 3) to eightfold 〈111〉 directions (N ≥ 3). This eightfold anisotropy enables 71° and 109° spin switching in SrRuO3 monolayers, analogous to 71° and 109° polarization switching in ferroelectric BiFeO3. First-principle calculations reveal that increasing the SrTiO3 layer thickness induces an emergent correlation-driven orbital ordering, tuning spin-orbit interactions and reorienting the SrRuO3 monolayer easy axis. Our work demonstrates that correlation effects can be exploited to substantially change spin-orbit interactions, stabilizing unprecedented properties in two-dimensional magnets and opening rich opportunities for low-power, multistate device applications.

Anomalous magnetoresistance due to longitudinal spin fluctuations in a Jeff = 1/2 Mott semiconductor

As a hallmark of electronic correlation, spin-charge interplay underlies many emergent phenomena in doped Mott insulators, such as high-temperature superconductivity, whereas the half-filled parent state is usually electronically frozen with an antiferromagnetic order that resists external control. We report on the observation of a positive magnetoresistance that probes the staggered susceptibility of a pseudospin-half square-lattice Mott insulator built as an artificial SrIrO₃/SrTiO₃ superlattice. Its size is particularly large in the high-temperature insulating paramagnetic phase near the Néel transition. This magnetoresistance originates from a collective charge response to the large longitudinal spin fluctuations under a linear coupling between the external magnetic field and the staggered magnetization enabled by strong spin-orbit interaction. Our results demonstrate a magnetic control of the binding energy of the fluctuating particle-hole pairs in the Slater-Mott crossover regime analogous to the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-to-Bose-Einstein condensation crossover of ultracold-superfluids.

Spin-charge interactions are at the core of electronic correlation phenomena in Mott insulators. Here, the authors observe a positive anomalous magnetoresistance in a SrIrO₃/SrTiO₃ superlattice, indicative of strong spin-charge fluctuations in this pseudospin-half square-lattice Mott insulator.

Direct Detection of Dimer Orbitals in Ba_{5}AlIr_{2}O_{11}

The electronic states of many Mott insulators, including iridates, are often conceptualized in terms of localized atomic states such as the famous "J_{eff}=1/2 state." Although orbital hybridization can strongly modify such states and dramatically change the electronic properties of materials, probing this process is highly challenging. In this Letter, we directly detect and quantify the formation of dimer orbitals in an iridate material Ba_{5}AlIr_{2}O_{11} using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. Sharp peaks corresponding to the excitations of dimer orbitals are observed and analyzed by a combination of density functional theory calculations and theoretical simulations based on an Ir-Ir cluster model. Such partially delocalized dimer states lead to a redefinition of the angular momentum of the electrons and changes in the magnetic and electronic behaviors of the material. We use this to explain the reduction of the observed magnetic moment with respect to predictions based on atomic states. This study opens new directions to study dimerization in a large family of materials, including solids, heterostructures, molecules, and transient states.

Unraveling the Nature of Magnetism of the 5d^{4} Double Perovskite Ba_{2}YIrO_{6}

We report electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy results on the double perovskite Ba_{2}YIrO_{6}. On general grounds, this material is expected to be nonmagnetic due to the strong coupling of the spin and orbital momenta of Ir^{5+} (5d^{4}) ions. However, controversial experimental reports on either strong antiferromagnetism with static order at low temperatures or just a weakly paramagnetic behavior have triggered a discussion on the breakdown of the generally accepted scenario of the strongly spin-orbit coupled ground states in the 5d^{4} iridates and the emergence of a novel exotic magnetic state. Our data evidence that the magnetism of the studied material is solely due to a few percent of Ir^{4+} and Ir^{6+} magnetic defects while the regular Ir^{5+} sites remain nonmagnetic. Remarkably, the defect Ir^{6+} species manifest magnetic correlations in the ESR spectra at T≲20  K, suggesting a long-range character of superexchange in the double perovskites as proposed by recent theories.
