Single Transverse Spin Asymmetry as a New Probe of Standard-Model-Effective-Field-Theory Dipole Operators

Electroweak dipole operators in the standard-model-effective-field theory (SMEFT) are important indirect probes of quantum effects of new physics beyond the standard model (SM), yet they remain poorly constrained by current experimental analyses for lack of interference with the SM amplitudes in constructing cross section observables. In this Letter, we point out that dipole operators flip fermion helicities and so are ideally studied through single transverse spin asymmetries. We illustrate this at a future electron-positron collider with transversely polarized beams, where such an effect exhibits as azimuthal cosϕ and sinϕ distributions which originate from the interference of the electron dipole operators with the SM and are linearly dependent on their Wilson coefficients. This new method can improve the current constraints on the electron dipole couplings by 1-2 orders of magnitude, without depending on other new physics operators, and can also simultaneously constrain both their real and imaginary parts, offering a new opportunity for probing potential CP-violating effects.

Probing New Gauge Forces with a High-Energy Muon Beam Dump

We propose a new beam-dump experiment at a future TeV-scale muon collider. A beam dump would be an economical and effective way to increase the discovery potential of the collider complex in a complementary regime. In this Letter, we consider vector models such as the dark photon and L_{μ}-L_{τ} gauge boson as new physics candidates and explore which novel regions of parameter space can be probed with a muon beam dump. We find that for the dark photon model, we gain sensitivity in the moderate mass (MeV-GeV) range at both higher and lower couplings compared to existing and proposed experiments, and gain access to previously untouched areas of parameter space of the L_{μ}-L_{τ} model.

Domain Walls Seeding the Electroweak Phase Transition

Topological defects can act as local impurities that seed cosmological phase transitions. In this Letter, we study the case of domain walls and how they can affect the electroweak phase transition in the singlet-extended standard model with a Z_{2}-symmetric potential. When the transition occurs in two steps, the early breaking of the Z_{2} symmetry implies the formation of domain walls which then act as nucleation sites for the second step. We develop a method based on a Kaluza-Klein decomposition to calculate the rate of the catalyzed phase transition within the 3D theory on the domain wall surface. By comparison with the standard homogeneous rate, we conclude that the seeded phase transition is generically faster and it ultimately determines the way the phase transition is completed. We finally comment on the phenomenological implications for gravitational waves.
