Nanoscale nonlinear optics in photonic-crystal fibres

Stable and high-power few cycle supercontinuum for 2D ultrabroadband electronic spectroscopy

Broadband supercontinuum (SC) pulses in the few cycle regime are a promising source for spectroscopic and imaging applications. However, SC sources are plagued by poor stability, greatly limiting their utility in phase-resolved nonlinear experiments such as 2D photon echo spectroscopy (2D PES). Here, we generated SC by two-stage filamentation in argon and air starting from 100 fs input pulses, which are sufficiently high-power and stable to record time-resolved 2D PE spectra in a single laser shot. We obtain a total power of 400 μJ/pulse in the visible spectral range of 500-850 nm and, after compression, yield pulses with duration of 6 fs according to transient-grating frequency-resolved optical gating (TG-FROG) measurements. We demonstrate the method on the laser dye, Cresyl Violet, and observe coherent oscillations indicative of nuclear wavepacket dynamics.

Supercontinuum pulse shaping in the few-cycle regime

The synthesis of nearly arbitrary supercontinuum pulse forms is demonstrated with sub-pulse structures that maintain a temporal resolution in the few-cycle regime. Spectral broadening of the 35 fs input pulses to supercontinuum bandwidths is attained in a controlled two-stage sequential filamentation in air at atmospheric pressure, facilitating a homogeneous power density over the full spectral envelope in the visible to near infrared spectral range. Only standard optics and a liquid crystal spatial light modulator (LC-SLM) are employed for achieving pulse compression to the sub 5 fs regime with pulse energies of up to 60 μJ and a peak power of 12 GW. This constitutes the starting point for further pulse form synthesis via phase modulation within the sampling limit of the pulse shaper. Transient grating frequency-resolved optical gating (TG-FROG) allows for the characterization of pulse forms that extend over several hundred femtoseconds with few-cycle substructures.

Bound soliton pairs in photonic crystal fiber

We demonstrate experimentally the formation and stable propagation of bound soliton pairs in a highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber. The bound pairs occur at a particular power as the consequence of high-order soliton fission. They propagate over long distances with constant inter-soliton frequency and time separation. During propagation, the soliton self-frequency shift causes the central frequency of the pairs to move towards longer wavelength. The formation and characteristics of the bound soliton pairs are confirmed numerically. We believe this to be the first experimental observation of such bound soliton pairs.

Multifrequency third-harmonic generation by red-shifting solitons in a multimode photonic-crystal fiber

While the standard scenario of third-harmonic generation (THG) by a dispersive-wave pump involves the emission of light with a frequency 3omega, thrice the frequency omega of the input pump field, solitons undergoing a continuous shift of their central frequency omega due to the Raman effect in a multimode optical fiber can generate the third harmonic in a different fashion. In the experiments reported here, we provide the first direct experimental evidence of THG by a continuously red-shifting soliton pump by studying the third-harmonic buildup in relation to the spectral evolution of the soliton pump field in a silica photonic-crystal fiber (PCF). We show that solitons excited in a PCF by unamplified femtosecond pulses of a Cr:forsterite laser sweep through the spectral range from 1.25 to 1.63 microm , scanning through a manifold of THG phase-matching resonances with 3omega dispersive waves in PCF modes. As a result, intense third-harmonic peaks build up in the range of wavelengths from 370 to 550 nm at the output of the fiber, making PCF a convenient fiber-format multifrequency source of short-wavelength radiation. Time-resolved fluorescence measurements with photoexcitation provided by the third-harmonic PCF output are presented, demonstrating the high potential of PCF sources for an ultrafast photoexcitation of fluorescent molecular systems in physics, chemistry, and biology.
