Exciton transport in the PE545 complex: insight from atomistic QM/MM-based quantum master equations and elastic network models

Optimized excitonic transport mediated by local energy defects: Survival of optimization laws in the presence of dephasing

In an extended star with peripheral defects and a core occupied by a trap, it has been shown that exciton-mediated energy transport from the periphery to the core can be optimized [S. Yalouz et al., Phys. Rev. E 106, 064313 (2022)2470-004510.1103/PhysRevE.106.064313]. If the defects are judiciously chosen, then the exciton dynamics is isomorphic to that of an asymmetric chain and a speedup of the excitonic propagation is observed. Here we extend this previous work by considering that the exciton in both an extended star and an asymmetric chain is perturbed by the presence of a dephasing environment. Simulating the dynamics using a Lindblad master equation, two questions are addressed: How does the environment affect the energy transport on these two networks? and Do the two systems still behave equivalently in the presence of dephasing? Our results reveal that the timescale for the exciton dynamics strongly depends on the nature of the network. But quite surprisingly, the two networks behave similarly regarding the survival of their optimization law. In both cases, the energy transport can be improved using the same original optimal tuning of energy defects as long as the dephasing remains weak. However, for moderate or strong dephasing, the optimization law is lost due to quantum Zeno effect.

An investigation into the energy transfer efficiency of a two-pigment photosynthetic system using a macroscopic quantum model

Despite several different measures of efficiency that are applicable to the photosynthetic systems, a precise degree of efficiency of these systems is not completely determined. Introducing an efficient model for the dynamics of light-harvesting complexes in biological environments is a major purpose in investigating such systems. Here, we investigate the effect of macroscopic quantum behavior of a system of two pigments on the transport phenomena in this system model which interacts with an oscillating environment. We use the second-order perturbation theory to calculate the time-dependent population of excitonic states of a two-dimensional Hamiltonian using a non-master equation approach. Our results demonstrate that the quantum efficiency is robust with respect to the macroscopicity parameter h˜ solely, but the ratio of macroscopicity over the pigment-pigment interaction energy can be considered as a parameter that may control the energy transfer efficiency at a given time. So, the dynamical behavior and the quantum efficiency of the supposed photosynthetic system may be influenced by a change in the macroscopic behavior of the system.

On the arrangement of chromophores in light harvesting complexes: chance versus design

We used a homogeneous computational approach to derive the excitonic Hamiltonian for five light harvesting complexes containing only one type of chromophore and compare them in terms of statistical descriptors. We then studied the approximate exciton dynamics for the five complexes introducing a measure, the (averaged and time-dependent) inverse participation ratio, that enables the comparison between very diverse complexes on the same ground. We find that the global dynamics are very similar across the set of systems despite the variety of geometric structures of the complexes. In particular, the dynamics of four out of five light harvesting complexes are barely distinguishable with a small variation from the norm seen only for the Fenna-Matthews-Olson complex. We use the information from the realistic Hamiltonians to build a reduced model system that shows how the global dynamics are ultimately dominated by a single parameter, the degree of localization of the excitonic Hamiltonian eigenstates. Considering the physically plausible range of system parameters, the reduced model explains why the dynamics are so similar across most light harvesting complexes containing a single type of chromophore regardless of the detailed pattern of the inter-chromophore excitonic coupling.
