Comparison of Bidirectional Transmittance Distribution Function (BTDF) Measurements on Fused Silica and Sintered Polytetrafluoroethylene Diffusers

Synchronous measurement method of a multi-angle scattered light field

A synchronous multi-angle scattered light field measurement system is constructed in this study to overcome issues with current systems in the field of multi-angle remote sensing. A mathematical model of the scattered light field measurement was established. An off-axis catadioptric optical system was designed to satisfy hemispheric spatial scattered light field measurements in a zenith angle range of 68°. The off-axis calibration model was established, and the spatial relationship was calibrated. The measurement accuracy was calibrated via an integrating sphere light source, and the maximum measurement relative error was -3.71%. The scattered light field of the reference diffuse reflective target plate Labsphere Permaflect-50 and 304 stainless steel was simulated under an incident light irradiation range within the zenith angle of -23.5^∘ to +23.5^∘, and synchronous measurement of the multi-angle scattered light field of the sample was realized. The measurement system could provide technical support for building the complex model of multi-angle reflection/radiation from the earth's surface, multi-angle sensor radiation calibration, and improvement of the physical parameter inversion accuracy of observation targets.

Optical Attenuators Extend Dynamic Range but Alter Angular Response of Planar Ultraviolet-C Dosimeters

Effective ultraviolet-C (UV-C) decontamination protocols of N95 respirators require validation that the entire N95 surface receives sufficient dose. Photochromic indicators (PCIs) can accurately measure UV-C dose on nonplanar surfaces, but often saturate below doses required to decontaminate porous, multilayered textiles like N95s. Here, we investigate the use of optical attenuators to extend PCI dynamic range while maintaining a near-ideal angular response-critical for accurate measurements of uncollimated UV-C. We show analytically that tuning attenuator refractive index, attenuation coefficient, and thickness can extend dynamic range, but compromises angular response unless the attenuator is an ideal diffuser. To investigate this tradeoff empirically, we stack PCIs behind model specular (floated borosilicate) and diffuse (polytetrafluoroethylene) attenuators, characterize the angular response, and evaluate on-N95 UV-C measurement accuracy within a decontamination system. Both attenuators increase PCI dynamic range >4×, but simultaneously introduce angle-dependent transmittance, which causes location-dependent underestimation of UV-C dose. PCI-borosilicate and PCI-polytetrafluoroethylene stacks underreport true on-N95 dose by (1) 14.7% and 3.6%, respectively, when near-normal to the source lamp array, and (2) 40.8% and 19.8%, respectively, in a steeply sloped location. Overall, we demonstrate that while planar attenuators can increase PCI dynamic range, verifying near-ideal angular response is critical for accurate UV-C measurements.

Fundamental scattering quantities for the determination of reflectance and transmittance

The bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) and the bidirectional scattering - surface reflectance distribution function (BSSRDF), which relate radiance at the surface to irradiance and radiant flux, respectively, are regarded as the most fundamental scattering quantities used to determine the reflectance of objects. However, for materials where the optical radiation is transmitted under the surface, this radiance depends not only on irradiance and radiant flux, but also on the size of the irradiated area of the surface. This article provides insight into such dependence under the special condition in which the radiance is evaluated within the irradiated area and, consequently, is produced by both the insurface reflection and the subsurface scattering, in contrast to the situation in which the radiance is evaluated at non-irradiated areas and only subsurface scattering contributes. By explicitly considering both contributions, two other scattering quantities are defined: one that accounts exclusively for the insurface reflection and the other that accounts for subsurface scattering. In this regard, these quantities might be considered more fundamental than the BRDF and the BSSRDF, although they are coincident with these two functions apart from the above-mentioned special condition and for materials with negligible subsurface scattering. In this work, the relevance of the proposed scattering quantities is supported by experimental data, practical considerations are given for measuring them, and their relation to the bidirectional transmittance distribution function (BTDF) is discussed.
