Production of microalgae with high lipid content and their potential as sources of nutraceuticals

In the current global scenario, the world is under a serious dilemma due to the increasing human population, industrialization, and urbanization. The ever-increasing need for fuels and increasing nutritional problems have made a serious concern on the demand for nutrients and renewable and eco-friendly fuel sources. Currently, the use of fossil fuels is creating ecological and economic problems. Microalgae have been considered as a promising candidate for high-value metabolites and alternative renewable energy sources. Microalgae offer several advantages such as rapid growth rate, efficient land utilization, carbon dioxide sequestration, ability to cultivate in wastewater, and most importantly, they do not participate in the food crop versus energy crop dilemma or debate. An efficient microalgal biorefinery system for the production of lipids and subsequent byproduct for nutraceutical applications could well satisfy the need. But, the current microalgal cultivation systems for the production of lipids and nutraceuticals do not offer techno-economic feasibility together with energy and environmental sustainability. This review article has its main focus on the production of lipids and nutraceuticals from microalgae, covering the current strategies used for lipid production and the major high-value metabolites from microalgae and their nutraceutical importance. This review also provides insights on the future strategies for enhanced microalgal lipid production and subsequent utilization of microalgal biomass.

Growth Performance, Biochemical Composition and Nutrient Recovery Ability of Twelve Microalgae Consortia Isolated from Various Local Organic Wastes Grown on Nano-Filtered Pig Slurry

This paper demonstrated the growth ability of twelve algae-microbial consortia (AC) isolated from organic wastes when a pig slurry-derived wastewater (NFP) was used as growth substrate in autotrophic cultivation. Nutrient recovery, biochemical composition, fatty acid and amino acid profiles of algae consortia were evaluated and compared. Three algae-microbial consortia, i.e., a Chlorella-dominated consortium (AC_1), a Tetradesmus and Synechocystis co-dominated consortium (AC_10), and a Chlorella and Tetradesmus co-dominated consortium (AC_12) were found to have the best growth rates (µ of 0.55 ± 0.04, 0.52 ± 0.06, and 0.58 ± 0.03 d⁻¹, respectively), which made them good candidates for further applications. The ACs showed high carbohydrates and lipid contents but low contents of both proteins and essential amino acids, probably because of the low N concentration of NFP. AC_1 and AC_12 showed optimal ω6:ω3 ratios of 3.1 and 3.6, which make them interesting from a nutritional point of view.

Stepwise-incremental physicochemical factors induced acclimation and tolerance in oleaginous microalgae to crucial outdoor stresses and improved properties as biodiesel feedstocks

Stress-tolerant oleaginous microalgae are promising for economical outdoor cultivation and biofuel production. This study aimed to induce acclimation and adaptive evolution of oleaginous Scenedesmus sp. SPP to tolerate crucial outdoor stresses by stepwise increasing of physicochemical factors: salinity, light intensity and temperature. The acclimatized strains showed better growth and accumulated 20-30% higher contents of lipids and chlorophylls. The adaptive-evolved strain showed greater tolerance to culture stresses by giving > 2-fold higher biomass under nitrogen rich and accumulating > 1.5-fold higher lipid content under nitrogen starvation compared to the parental strain. Moreover, stepwise increasing of multi-stresses successfully induced the multi-tolerance of the adaptive-evolved strain and gave the highest lipid content of 44.1 ± 1.5%. The extracted lipids from acclimatized/evolved strains show improved prospect fuel properties in terms of high cetane number and oxidative stability. These results show the effectiveness of stepwise-incremental physicochemical factors to intensify potential of microalgae for outdoor cultivation and as biodiesel feedstocks.
