Severe Plastic Deformation and Phase Transformations in High Entropy Alloys: A Review

This review discusses an area of expertise that is at the intersection of three large parts of materials science. These are phase transformations, severe plastic deformation (SPD), and high-entropy alloys (HEA). First, SPD makes it possible to determine the borders of single-phase regions of existence of a multicomponent solid solution in HEAs. An important feature of SPD is that using these technologies, it is possible to obtain second-phase nanoparticles included in a matrix with a grain size of several tens of nanometers. Such materials have a very high specific density of internal boundaries. These boundaries serve as pathways for accelerated diffusion. As a result of the annealing of HEAs subjected to SPD, it is possible to accurately determine the border temperature of a single-phase solid solution area on the multicomponent phase diagram of the HEA. Secondly, SPD itself induces phase transformations in HEAs. Among these transformations is the decomposition of a single-phase solid solution with the formation of nanoparticles of the second phase, the formation of high-pressure phases, amorphization, as well as spinodal decomposition. Thirdly, during SPD, a large number of new grain boundaries (GBs) are formed due to the crystallites refinement. Segregation layers exist at these new GBs. The concentration of the components in GBs differs from that in the bulk solid solution. As a result of the formation of a large number of new GBs, atoms leave the bulk solution and form segregation layers. Thus, the composition of the solid solution in the volume also changes. All these processes make it possible to purposefully influence the composition, structure and useful properties of HEAs, especially for medical applications.

Formation and Thermal Stability of ω-Ti(Fe) in α-Phase-Based Ti(Fe) Alloys

In this work, the formation and thermal stability of the ω-Ti(Fe) phase that were produced by the high-pressure torsion (HPT) were studied in two-phase α-Ti + TiFe alloys containing 2 wt.%, 4 wt.% and 10 wt.% iron. The two-phase microstructure was achieved by annealing the alloys at 470 °C for 4000 h and then quenching them in water. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were utilized to characterize the samples. The thermal stability of the ω-Ti(Fe) phase was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and in situ high-temperature XRD. In the HPT process, the high-pressure ω-Ti(Fe) phase mainly formed from α-Ti. It started to decompose by a cascade of exothermic reactions already at temperatures of 130 °C. The decomposition was finished above ~320 °C. Upon further heating, the phase transformation proceeded via the formation of a supersaturated α-Ti(Fe) phase. Finally, the equilibrium phase assemblage was established at high temperatures. The eutectoid temperature and the phase transition temperatures measured in deformed and heat-treated samples are compared for the samples with different iron concentrations and for samples with different phase compositions prior to the HPT process. Thermodynamic calculations were carried out to predict stable and metastable phase assemblages after heat-treatments at low (α-Ti + TiFe) and high temperatures (α-Ti + β-(Ti,Fe), β-(Ti,Fe)).

Dissolution of Ag Precipitates in the Cu⁻8wt.%Ag Alloy Deformed by High Pressure Torsion

The aim of this work was to study the influence of severe plastic deformation (SPD) on the dissolution of silver particles in Cu–8wt.%Ag alloys. In order to obtain different morphologies of silver particles, samples were annealed at 400, 500 and 600 °C. Subsequently, the material was subjected to high pressure torsion (HPT) at room temperature. By means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy, as well as X-ray diffraction techniques, it was found that during SPD, the dissolution of second phase was strongly affected by the morphology and volume fraction of the precipitates in the initial state. Small, heterogeneous precipitates of irregular shape dissolved more easily than those of large size, round-shaped and uniform composition. It was also found that HPT led to the increase of solubility limit of silver in the copper matrix as the result of dissolution of the second phase. This unusual phase transition is discussed with respect to diffusion activation energy and mixing enthalpy of the alloying elements.

Irregularities of crystallographic orientation and residual stresses in the crossed-lamellar shell as a natural functionally graded material

The microstructures of different groups of molluscs are characterized by preferential orientations of crystallites (texture), leading to a significant anisotropy of the physical properties of the shells. A complementary characteristic, usually neglected, is the distribution of the residual stresses existing within the shell wall. By means of X-ray diffraction, we study the distribution of stresses with thickness in the shell wall of the gastropod Conus marmoreus, which has a microstructure of the crossed-lamellar type. The results revealed an extraordinary texture inhomogeneity and the existence of tensional residual stresses along the shell thickness, the origins of which are unknown. Some of the observed changes in textural parameters and stresses coincide with the transitions between shell layers, although other features are of unknown origin. Our results provide insight into the microstructural regularities that govern the mesoscale construction of shells, such as that of C. marmoreus.
